Who was the baddest 500 rider in MX history?

Total Championships not withstanding, who could ride the 500 2-stroke as close to the physical limit as possible. I unfortunatley wasn't able to witness the 500 era, but from the videos I've seen, seems like Bailey or Lechien would be possible candidates.
I remember Bailey saying Lechien rode a 500 like a 250 2-stroke. I would love to see that. Maybe that's why Lechien never won a c-ship.

What do some of you guy's who witnessed this era think? Bobby M, who's your pick?

Before Jeff Stanton was a factory rider he used to ride the wheels of a YZ490. The bikes were half ragged out and he was battling the top dogs.

the GPs had some amazing guys..

jobe , malherbe, geobors, etc etc


In everts first 500GP, he rode a 500AF(built by american honda) and won both motos in the belgium 500GP in 99.



my pick for a guy who rode the 500 the best..


JMB .


he put a complete school on how to ride one, at the 500 US GP at carlsbad,

noone was close.

I think you meant the 500 USGP at Glen Helen.
Carlsbad's last GP was held in 1986, a little before JMB's time.

There's no way Bailey was the best because of him not being able to beat Glover in 85. He was on a works Honda against that 490 and Glover handled him. Which was a change from the year before when he beat down Broc.
My guess would be Bayle, seen him quite a few times and it was effortless for him back then. MXKied would also be a good choice.

You're right AJ, JMB was one of the best. He had more throttle control than anyone I can think of.

He was so smooth that he looked slow.

I dunno. DeCoster spent a lot of years at the top of the 500 class...and I'd bet those early beasts were nightmares. We are talking international, right?

It's definitely a different style to ride one of these things on an MX track. You can go faster...but ya gotta be patient.

you may be on to something...

Glover won the championship in 81,83 and 85...probably the same bike different tank graphics.
