What about a Privateer who has a fill in ride for a Factory Team for a Round or 3, does that rule him inelligible?

With all of these race teams popping up, I think the "privateer" term will be thrown out the window in the near future.

It's either you are on a team or not.

I agree.. That's pretty much how it is in the GP's already. You're either on a team or you don't race there though.. There's zero entries from guys doing it on there own. I hope we always have some amount of guys trying to do it on their own though. I think the privateers will always make great stories.

Very true. I am very grateful, otherwise I might end up having a job like you, or even worse be unemployed, or is that worse.

While I'm on the Band-Wagon that there should be some kinda "Real Privateer" recognition...

I can't believe how Bitter some of you are.

You have NO IDEA how "Private" the Hewitt/Keefe Team is:

The BUY their Bikes...from DEALERS!
They're on '09s.
They went out and secured Sponsors just like a REAL PRIVATEER has to.
They have, and are VERY Grateful for, some great Equipment Sponsors.

I get your guy's point(s); however, you are barking up the wrong tree...IT9 and James BOTH are on Privateer rides when we go by the current definition...and that's jus' wrong. Same goes for The Monster/Kawasaki/P.C. Team...Technically..."Privateer Team".

And, let's be clear, there is NO BETTER Team in the Padock than Mitch's Team. The P.C. Team is as Works as it gets...often, by their OWN doing...that changes things a bit...doesn't it? Think about it...they've gone beyond "Factory"...

There needs to be an "understanding"...hell, a "Definition":

Factory Level Teams.
Factory Support Level Teams.
Privateer Teams.
Real Privateers.

I'm jus' sayin'...

Exactly the point i was trying to make in the begining of this thread. What appears outside is not what is inside. People on here just assume that they are factory by the way they present themselves.

Everyone knows why you say what you do.

It has to do with who signs that check.

This bitch has been going on forever. Maybe the best thing to do is take the privateer fund and increase the purse money from 20th-40th place which where a good portion of the true privateers will end up finishing anyway. Or something along those lines.

No matter what the rules say back door deals are put in place to keep riders from jeopardizing their privateer status anyway. Right?

Yep, any rider, anywhere, doesn't matter his quality can get a full factory ride with salary of a million euro. Not sure where I said that befoe, but....

how the fuck did this turn into a AMA vs GP thread again? this is unreal.

i do agree that MX Sports should rethink the rules for the privateer bonuses. the good thing is; DC is open minded, reads this board and i'm sure they will look into this.

the only problem i see: where do you draw the line for that category? most kids get free bikes that race and if they don't someone else bought it for them, ect...

what i say: have privateers register to get the moneys before the season starts. this way, MX Sports can review the entries and see if they qualify.

Not many pros buy their own bikes, or parts, or gear, or transportation. Most of them have some level of support from somebody. Whether it be industry, or just friends and family that want to help further the riders dream. Therefore, my opinion is that if you aren't drawing a regular salary, you are a privateer.

I'm open for suggestions on working on the rules to qualify for the top privateer. Doesn't matter if it is 4 out of 6 or 100 out of 300! I believe we as privateers / fans/ family/ friends and industry of the sport should come up with a system. Leave comments on my site and we will develop a system.

Good luck with that, Chris. Scott and I tackled the question seven years ago and we came up with our own criteria for determining who is and is not a privateer. It was different than the one in place at that time by SFX Ent., and we definitely had their ear. But, at the end of the day they had theirs and we had ours.

What I'm saying is that just because you "develop a system" that makes perfect sense to you does not mean that Feld or the AMA or MX Sports is going to adopt it. Good luck.

Dont kid yourself. If i remember correctly Mr. Hewitt is an extremely successful man outside of dirtbikes. Im sure his business sense and personal capital were instrumental in starting his team. By now i would bet his team makes him a couple dollars or he wouldn't continue to do it. The fact of the matter is that his team is a professionally run organization with major corporate sponsors, paid employees, and paid athletes.
I dont give a shit what the definition is, his riders are NOT privateers.

Yeah I know but many if enough people speak up it will open some eyes. In any case I've still got the points system and will keep track of it. I'm trying to get some sponsors now to help with the cause.

But you know as much as I do it's like beating a dead horse over and over again. People say they support the privateers but when it comes time to do it they are nowhere to be found!

privateer team - one rider, one dude who assembes bikes at the local honda shop and repairs lawn mowers (mechanic), one friend who loaned his van (team driver) because the rider nor mechanics trucks would make it to and back, a cooler filled with pb&j, lawn chairs, a a shitty canopy, a year old bike loaned from a dealership (factory backing), and the only salary is the 8.50 an hour said rider is getting selling snowboards at zumiez (corporate sponsors).

rider goes into debt a few grand each year he does this and has to take a year off from racing so he can save up to do it again the next.

and the only contract I ever signed is when I rip the throttle open through a sand corner, inked in sweat.

...and I can't wait to do it again!
