This sport has survived before energy drink sponsors and will survive after. Yes it's nice to have companies support SX/MX teams, but some of these riders are getting paid so much from these companies now they refuse to buy their own bikes. " I'm too good to buy my own bike" attitude makes me sick. It seems as though while supporting the sport these companies also take away our roots and take away the passion.

Peter Coors sponsored a race at Trubuco Canyon years ago, they painted the water tower like a Coors Can. I raced that race along with Dick Mann in the old timers class. Larry R was in the expert/pro class and at the time Sue Fish was his girlfriend. She raced the 125 class expert class. It was a Grand Prix. Coors was a great sponsor.
Then.

I don't think Coors needs MX to sell beer.

That was exactly my point riders and promoters are relying to heavily on the energy drink money that if for some reason it was pulled the huge money these riders are making would cease to exist. Just about EVERY rider has some form of energy drink sponsor weather it's individual or team sponsored. MItch would have a verrrrry hard time replacing the amount of money they get from Monster.

I'm not sure they will go away. Monster, Red Bull, and Rockstar have the money to fund R&D departments to conform to whatever regulations the government rolls out. Okus, when the smaller companies fold it will only make the big three stronger.

The question was where will the money come from not what are we gonna do when MX implodes.
It's a good question. As pointed out the energy drinks are deeply entrenched in our sport and any cutback would have significant impact across the board. I don't think they'll go away but I predict a shift. These companies are very smart and can afford the best brains to work for them. Once they reach what they consider to be maximum yield in any particular market they wont continue to spend what they currently do, marketing will switch to a maintenance levels and sponsorships will follow.
Our sport used to have a number of different sponsors from a variety of industries, now things have changed and as pointed out earlier almost every team or rider has some funding from enerygy drinks, I don't think this is a healthy situation for our sport.

OK, I'll put the soap box away.

cheers

Good point. PC used to be sponsored by Peak Antifreeze and the series was sponsored by somebody else. Now, it's Monster Kawasaki and PC's main sponsor is Monster and the series sponsor is Monster. Honda has Red Bull, JGR has Muscle Milk, Suzuki has Rockstar.

At least Suzuki also has Makita and JLaw Racing has Boost Mobile and AMPM as "outside" sponsors.

The value to sponsors is still there. A good team could run on $5 million and that won't even get you a Truck team in NASCAR. All of the things that are happening now with live TV and the resugence of the outdoor series are good tools for the marketing people in MX. The demographic is with MX, The TV packages are getting there and the brand loyalty of the MX fan is strong. As long as we all do our part in supporting the sport the corporations will follow. Keep the TV numbers up, convert as many non-moto people you can and buy products from the companies that support our sport and we will get to be "big" time. Just be careful what you wish for. Once it hits it won't bethe same and you can't whine when the pits are restricted and you can't be close to the action any more.

FoMoCo is doing pretty good. (didn't take any of our/govt $$$)

I don't think they've ever sponsored any mx/sx related stuff..

be great for them to step in one day.

Chevy Trucks carried MX for quite some time.

Yes they did, Ford was a sponsor on a Suzuki team in the early 90's. Tichenor was on the team is about all I remember.

I am sure Hollywood is already thinking of another niche to bring to the sport.

(disclaimer* I have no thoughts or ideas on the ongoing Hollywood VS. Monster saga nor am I close with him. However looking back on the sport he has brought A few BIG named sponsors into our world first working with MC. I may be wrong but I think we owe it to him for gettign 1-800 collect and Dudweiser to back MC and then ultimately the series. Is that correct?)

Coors seems to think it works well here in Montreal, the title sponsor for the Montreal supercross is Coors light.

What about GEICO?? Huge advertising presence and spending a lot of money in our sport. Gives SX/MX a lot of credibility.

Yep, and one would think that the "big 3" are already two steps a head of the Government (as far as R&D goes).

Forget about the money energy drinks spend in SX/MX. It is a small amount of money when compared with what the five OEMs spend in the sport.

What happens when the OEMs that have supported SX/MX from the very beginning stop paying huge salaries and even close down their factory teams?

Oh yeah, that is happening right now.

Great point on the pits DAG!!

That said I went to Barber to the Indy car practice this spring and was surprised I could walk right up to Danica. She and others had very little security in place. There were probably 20,000 fans there that day.

Unfortunately onlyyou and those 20K are the only ones watching on TV it seems. Their TV rating are absolutely horrible on the Vs. network. Good for Mx though because a $5 million sponsorship is aboutthe going rate for an IRL team.Could have a top flight MX program for that. IRL got Izod as a title sponsor so that is a case where MX could do the same. Abercrombie, Hollister , Gap all potential sponsors that could take advantage of the MX demographic.

I have posted a few times on the effects of the energy drinks pulling dollars. It's not a question of if, it's a matter of when. Those guys are going to get hard by the FDA before too much longer. I'm actually surprised they have left them alone for so long. Anyone with a basic knowledge of nutrition and physiology can see how horrible those energy drinks are for you.

You have an excellent point about the OEM's pulling their dollars. And that is what's happening know. There is no doubt they want out of the sport and with things the way they are, I don't see how the sport will survive on a significant level.

It's an interesting time for moto.

Bingo. I wish one of them would support a team to the extent of a RedBull or Monster does.

Why is the energy drink money going to go away?? Doubtful the gov will step in and do something when they cant sort the enviroment out. Plus the market for the drinks will always be there. RB has been around for nearly 20 yrs in a big way. I think they will be in our sport for many yrs to come since we offer them the perfect demo.

Also, by the time the drinks maybe start to fade our sport will be at a bigger level with more involvement from other areas.

The sky is not yet falling.
