Couple things, while lower temps can be good when achieved, the real goal you want to shoot for is stability in temperatures.

You want your choice of coolant to maintain a more consistent overall operating temperature that will allow your engine to maintain more consistent power and throttle response throughout your race or trail ride.

This is applicable to stock and modified engines.


Some advice and the two primary things we see:

1) Don't idle. Don't stop and BS with your buddies and let the engine idle, shut it off. There's no fan and nothing to move air across the radiator when you're idling, so your cooling system is practically inoperative. Also, on the starting line, fire it up at the last minute, as late as possible. Old two stroke habits make us fire it up early to warm it up and clean it out...unnecessary on four strokes.


2) Do not fill the radiator all the way to the cap, fill only to the top of the core. You have no idea how many times people come to me saying "I 'burn' a little coolant every time I ride and have to top it off every ride" to which I reply "Are you filling it all the way to the top?" and they'll say "of course!"

That's the problem. Fluids expand when hot, and if you fill to the top, the fluid will get pushed out when it gets hot and expands. Fill only to the top of the core...the core you see when you look into the radiator cap neck...do not "top off"

Seat cutting is an art on these small stem dia heads. Has to be done by someone who really knows what they're doing...no hand cutters here.. concentricity must be .001" or under.

I just going to suggest the same thing.. ProCircuit runs them on their race bikes as well.. It works good for containg the coolant and keep it in the system rather then having it empty on the ground when it boils over. When the bike heats up, the coolant goes into the bottle, when it cools down, it sucks back into the radiator.. Works good!

You were recommended by several on Thumpertalk, and if I had the extra $$$$ I would have had you do the work for me (In fact, I will the next time I do the valves...I'll be going with steel next time, and I want to get them done perfect next time).

I had them done by a local dealer, and they said they did just that (cut the seats). Is a dealer going to be as precise as you would be? Probably not...but I got the entire thing done for $150 labor plus parts (I have a friend at the dealership)...$$$ is a bit tight right now, and so I had to go economy over quality this time around.

Thanks for the advice.

I never said valves would melt or coolant would boil without heat. I am saying that you don't need excessive exhaust temps to get coolant to boil (ever hear of a bad radiator cap?), and you don't need coolant to boil first before valves melt; you float exhaust valves and they don't cool by seating, you'll burn them long before you see high coolant temps.

Steam pockets, but in order to do that the overall water temp would have to be reaching boiling, and you'd have to have zero to no circulation by the water pump.

At idle, a engines exhaust temp is relatively cold compared to WFO, but with no water circulation, or the water not circulating fast enough you can have problems.

Too fast can be a problem too.

I grabbed the wrong post for the quote. I was trying to say that making the coolant colder isn't really what ya want to do. You want to make it run the right temperature.

Yes, you can melt things without overheating the coolant. I said that in other posts within this thread. I once worked on a 3406B (Cat engine) that had injection timing problems so bad that most of the burn was happening in the exhaust manifold. The coolant temp was low, the pyro temp was sky high, and the thing melted its own turbo.

Again...proper coolant temp does help proper fuel burn, if all other things are set up and running properly.

Can't you just have new seats pressed in? I thought on these modern 4 strokes the seats can be pressed in or out of the head, is that true?

A new seat can be put in after the old one is cut out, then the new seat which is like a blank is cut. But don't let Jesse do it, as you can see he uses blue dye.... wrong color! We use red!

The left from right thing is hardwired wrong in some people. A woman I dated for five years (should have married, smartest woman I've ever met and pretty but I digress) could NOT to save her life get the left from right thing straight.

You can also run a higher pressure radiator cap to deal with cooling issues. I just put a 1.8 Kawasaki mini bike radiator cap on the 2009 YZ250F I just finished.

AAHH, ok , yeah I thought I saw a pic somewhere of a new head for a crf, and it looked like the seats were not pressed into it. New seats can be pressed in but they also have to be cut anyway. Good to know. Thanks

Boiling point in a closed system must be the same in all altitudes,
what diferent is enginice against red line water wetter?
Titanium valves is lighter and moore heat resistant than stainless.

I'll be the first to admit I know next to nothing about jetting...yes, I'm a fan of EFI.

As for how slow I ride...it's all relative I guess...but on single track I very seldom get it out of 3rd gear...and most of the time is spent in either 2nd or 1st...so in relation to how fast I'd be going on an MX track (which is what this bike is built for) I'm going pretty damn slow.

And the titanium valves are lighter than stainless, but stainless valves don't have the hard coating (nitrate, I think it's called) to wear off...and thus last longer.

Jetting is off means its rich, which means its running colder internal combustion temps, regardless of RPM

Slower riding, you could be right with inadequate airflow. How slow are you?

If you think dirt is bypassing the filter, look at the carb intake bell. If it is, it's evident.

Titanium valves is lighter and moore heat resistant than stainless.

As for how slow I ride...it's all relative I guess...but on single track I very seldom get it out of 3rd gear...and most of the time is spent in either 2nd or 1st...so in relation to how fast I'd be going on an MX track (which is what this bike is built for) I'm going pretty damn slow.

And the titanium valves are lighter than stainless, but stainless valves don't have the hard coating (nitrate, I think it's called) to wear off...and thus last longer.
2nd or 3rd gear should be plenty of airflow on single track, its not like you've WFO and even then, thats a pretty decent clip..

Are you really getting hot enough to puke out fluid?

Maybe you have a leaky head gasket, that will boil the coolant and make it blow past the pressure cap real fast.

Instead of a 1.1 pressure cap get a 1.3 or 1.6 or whatever if its available if you need a higher boil point than a 50/50 mix gives.

If you need cooling, reality is, less coolant and more water cools better.

Coolant really isnt coolant, its a boil point raiser/freeze point reducer.

I don't know the temps on my dirt bike (just watch for boiling over). But, in my Shifter Kart with a KTM 125, ithe ice most certainly drops the temps. It did get to the mid 190's with just anti-freeze, never gets over 174 with the ice,
