This is true ONLY if they were riding with a modern day rider who they could watch. How do I know??? Because I watch the old SX races on the Greatest SX races DVDs and Ward, Hannah and the rest could barely do a 15-20 ft double with thier works bikes with 40 HP... They look like novice riders on those old basic obstacles, they really didn't even try to hit anything that would be a double (they weren't intentional doubles back then) they rolled them whereas a modern rider on that old works bike would double that obstacle no prob. He did ride '77 250 Support at Sears Point using #1 plate, white backgrounds as well.

So, at best (assuming all of the stars aligned, the conditions were absolutely perfect that the jumps were just the right size where a true novice would have confidence to do it but a pro wouldn't recognize it as being something you could double) we could assume the old day pro would probably lose time on the first lap, notice what was going on, then beat the ever loving crap out of the novice on lap two, and probably, by the end of the day, be well into the strong Pro B/Pro A times.

'Course you stick even a top 20 pro on one of the "their" tracks, and my bet is you'd still have a race.

I really didn't put THAT much thought into this. BUTsince you are a drivel loving bitch you ARE CORRECT.... I was never arguing that the old pro couldn't beat a Novice, it was my mistake for not making that clear. My argument was meant to raise the hairs on the "my era is toughest/best" guys.... My point was when you look at the old races on DVD it is MORE than obvious that modern day technique is so far advanced that the old pros didn't even know to pop over the two jumps to make it one. I saw Jeff Ward do it on the old races SX dvd and he cased it and looked scared and stiff they look and are freaking slow by todays standards, but back then they were GODS... just the facts, the proof is in the DVD and races we watch even BobMs MXDN which was great but shows the technique is dated... which is fine.

Well.... obviously you're another person leaving in your past through your corruptable and inaccurate memory... The problem with your view is that it is biased toward the absolute wonder of you memories of early MX/SX. This is quite the norm, so don't feel like the lame ass I think you are...Its normal for everybody from an earlier time to think that what they saw was the biggest and best ever, your mind was young and extemely impressionable so those early memories are imprinted very brightly in you grey matter.... The plain old gawd dam fact of the f'ing matter is that when you look at the DVD's (regardless of how cool they are) was THEY DIDN"T KNOW the techniques found later.... That is not to take away from what they achieved, they were monsters. My point is intended to take away from what you THINK you saw as compared to TODAY....
Now to prove my point..... Give the Jeff Ward of today his OLD BIKE from the first couple SXs, and I think he will beat his young self by using the techniques he learned in the last 25 years...
Most decent novices jump all kinds of crazy stuff. The power of the bike and suspension allows that. So, on a modern sx style track, things get sketchy. The whole bike breaking issue. But, on a 70's era track, I can't see it all.

Been married to the same woman for 30 years now and in no way am I some type of a “player”. Point I am trying to make is that a 75 TM 125 isn’t as good as the bikes we ride today, and in realty music is no different. People get to nostalgic about the music of their time and it causes them to block out anything new. Most of us were dumb shits when we were teenagers and made some of the worse decisions of our lives, but we think our choice of music at the time was spot on.
Living in the past is a waste of the present.
If were on this site, I think we all still love the sport regardless of what time warp we maybe in.
Love racin' as much now as I did over 35 yrs ago. Just don't agree a Novice today could be a National Champ of the past.
