Has anyone else been there??

Great track.

Saw a few memorable events at that place.

East-West shootout: West team had Tim Hart, John Desoto, John Rice, Jim O'Neal, Jim Wilson, and Jim West. Forgot who the East coasters were. First round was held at Pepperell Mass and the two teams left there seperated by a point. The west coasters laid waste to them at Bay Mare though. A thorough butt whupping.

Then there was a Nor-cal/So-cal shootout. Lackey rode a CZ with the dove on the bars. Bob Grossi crushed the locals in the 5-hunny class.

Also went to an Inter-Am event that was later (much later) televised on Wide World of Sports. Bengt Aberg, Arne Kring on Huskies, Ake Jonsson on Maico. Sylvain Geboers rode the 370 Suzuki, finished well back in 5th or sumpin like that. The Japanese mechanics spent more time taking pictures of the Euro bikes than they did wrenching on Geboers bike.

Just where was Baymare? I remember after I got out of the Army at the end on 1970 my brother mentioning that place. I seem to remember a track at Terminal Island, in Long Beach and another one up off the Long Beach frwy near Bell or in that area. Ring any bells?

Hey Rod, how ya bean man?

The track off the 710 and Firestone @ Garfield/Eastern was Trojan Raceway that you were thinking of. KC

Baymare was off the 118...

Yup, I guess parts of 118 were around then.

Baymare was west of Moorpark (Krap room spelled backwards).

The 118 didn't make it thru to Moorpark in those days so you'd have to take Tierra Rejada road out of Simi Valley thru all the orange groves. The track was at the of Bixby Road off Balcom Canyon. Officially the area is known as Somis

The thing I most remember about that drive were some of the bends in the road. They'd be yellow sign posted at 15 mph and they weren't kidding when they put those signs up.

I think there was a Super Hunky column once about over cooking one of those turns and ending up in the groves.

When I was 17-18 I was in a car on those roads, at night, with a bunch of drunks, unfamiliar with the road, who thought it would be great fun to turn off the headlights and turn on the interior light.

Let's just say it was a bad move.

Anybody have a copy of that old "Snoopy" ad they used to run in Cycle news all the time?

Cycle Haven was the track out on Terminal Island.

Joe Stern and I were talking about the track the other day...we remember a kid named Goforth that used to fly around that place.

Dave Eropkin...next time the OTHG and the OTMX have a race together we need to look each other up and say "hey".

You don't race with the OTHG any more so we don't get to shoot the sh*t. That leaves me talking to Blix and Stern about the "old school stuff". :D

I am 19g with the OTHG this year.

We used to ride on what was left of the track in the late 80's but the track was pretty torn up and rough from erosion. I saw my first Motocross there but never got to race there. Yes, it was off of the 118fwy in Moorpark, CA and up above the orange groves next to a brick mfg.

yeah my boss said he rode there and Johnny O'mara used to race there. Then they closed it and fenced it off but people cut the fence and kept riding there.

My dad managed Muntz/Valley Cycle Park, until it closed in 1976. My brother,Tom Zahnter, and I both raced at Baymare in the mid-late '60's. I'll have to dig out some photos----.

Muntz / valley cycle was awsome. After years of trying to negotiate a minibike out of my dad he bought me a SL70 when I was 9 yrs old, and first place we took it was muntz. I still remember driving down the 23 fwy looking for this place and then I see this place with hundreds of dirt bikes, I was blown away. Rode and raced there till it closed in 76. Went to the Jim West memorial race there. Rode there the last day it was open. Great times.

Bay mare I remember closed then re-opened in 73 or 74 briefly I believe for a few races. We went and watched but never raced there.

Baymare was in Somis, CA. You took the 118 (Los Angeles Ave.) to Balcom Canyon RD., then turned right onto Bixby Rd. It was in a canyon, at the end of the road. Just some dirt and a few ranch out-buildings there, from the current Google Earth images.

Hey Sam, did your dad run Muntz after my dad left in '76? I quit paying attention to the track after my dad died. The name had changed to Valley Cycle Park in about 1975.

I loved that track. I only got to race there twice before it closed. Here’s what it looks like today.

Everthing from the first gate to the second is now orange trees around 6k of them and the end of the canyon where the track was is prob still empty.i was still a future thought in 62 lol
