Does anyone have any info on the 250's that year? Things along the lines of reliability problems and if many were imported in to the country and anything you might think to add.

I'm going to do some Vintage Racing next year (2008) and I'm thinking of getting one of these and a 1981 Yamaha YZ465 or Maico 490 for the Open Class. I know a lot about the YZ and Maico since I raced both of them but I can't remember seeing any of the MK15 Buls around though.

The last Pursang I raced was the MK9 250, the one where they used the 17.5" shocks to get a long travel rear end. It was fast and handled good once I got some Works Performance on the back and wouldn't mind one of those if the MK15 isn't a viable option.

Thanks for your time...

Send Gary an e-mail as he is a Bultaco freak & will let you know the straight scoop.

If you going to race the open class, get the 490 Maico, it turns better & will out run the YZ.

It's also easier to ride using the bottom end out of a corner, I can help you set it up right.

Thanks for the link to that site. I've never run across them in my searches so I'll definately give them a call.

In 81 I raced the 490 and with some Ohlins on the back it was a dream.
I can't think of a better motor, the sweetest powerband any company ever brought to the track. If I can find one that won't cost me an arm and a leg I'd much prefer the Maico over the YZ that's for sure.

Thanks again...

an arm and a leg right?

I've seen a few that were restored and for sale that cost about double what they were new but all in all they're probably worth it.

if you find a Bultaco MK15 I'd advise you to buy it regardless of it's condition as none were imported into the US & hardly any made it out of the homeland as the grim reaper was at the factory doors as that model was becoming a reality.Might not make much of a rider but it'd be one helluva collectable & conversation piece!
Model 219 & 220s were about the last of the Pursangs for these shores & I believe they were MK11s or 12s at the most.

I knew the 15's were the last ones made but I didn't know they weren't imported in the US. I have a feeling if I did find one I would even want to ride it let alone race it. Too rare of an animal and should probably be in a museum.

Glad you mentioned this so now I can start looking for 11 and 12's or heck maybe even a 9. Had a ton of good races on my MK9 and it was reliable as anything I ever owned.

Thanks for the input...

Wheelsmith definately made the best Maico stuff and it sounds like you have a good one.

I love the look of this one...

http://maicomx.net/parts_81rv490.htm

From what they say Wulfsport bought up all the pre-81 spares from the Maico factory as well as a lot of 81 and 82's as well. So if you're ever looking for a hard to find part they might be your best bet. They even say they have complete frames so who knows, even if I can just find a solid engine I could buy the frame from them and go from there and have a sweet new one.
