Stevie, thanks for the picture and insite on the mod. Any post heat treatment and did you vapor blast that cylinder? I've been thinking about vapor blasting my topend instead of the factory flat red finish.

Work of art as usual! Smile

Pops like to braze (bronze weld) frames.... he's old!! So theres no issues with heat treatment etc. You can Mig or Tig weld them as well but don't fusion weld them with oxy/acetylene, It will make the joint brittle and it will crack. The tubing on these old things is chrome moly so its not anything super special.

I found it vibrates less with the '79 head.

Yes the head and barrel are vapour blasted. We did a '79 with a flat red bottom and "Au Natural" top end a year or so ago. It looked really sweet!!

I have a 4 79 and 80 cr 250s. The 79 has a port change from 78. Boost port I believe. 80 has center port but same port timing. I think the transfers in 1980 have flat roof to cause more turbulence and torque vs a sloped roof and top end power. The big change was header on 1980 was alot longer boosting bottom end. The 1980 dg pipe has short header like 1979 stock pipe and moves power upwards. Proform 1980 ihas header length in between for broader power. 1980 had different ignition , but not sure if it made significant power range difference. Power wise I like 79 mid top burst. 1980 signed off too quick for my taste with stock pipe..but a pipe change makes big difference ..it is all rider preference.

I agree that the 80' is a bottom to mid motor. Have not tried the "screamer" 78' to 79' yet Sad

Grumpy is that a DG pipe on your CR? Very sharp restoration just like the rest of your bikes in the other thread. Mine won't be quite the nice looking bikes as what you and Stevie build but I hope to have a great racer when done. I've always liked the look of the 78-80 CRs and finally got my 1980 at the end of last year. I have some upgrades in the works, 43mm cartridge forks and aluminum swingarm but that's about it.

Hi 450exc,..the pipe is stock. The 125 and 250 I bought were both super low hour bikes and 98% original. If I could find an arm for the 250 I'd buy it. I had to get rid of the oval silencer for a period correct roundy though Smile

Different ignition on the 80 affected power as well, though the 78-79 variations can be swapped in.

Love 78-80 Cr250 threads

I recently picked up a 79. It has been on display in a office for many years and somebody's personal museum before that. I spend all my money on bikes so I don't own a house nice enough to display it in so we are going to race the hell out of it. On the search for Fox forks, Fox Shocks, and Fox swingarm.

Here's a picture of a 1980 wearing the stock pipe,,and the original DG pipe for 1980 held up to it so you can see the difference in header pipe length. The original DG pipes did not have badge welded on. They are tough to identify for many,,,as they had a sticker on them that burned off. The bracket was brazed on,,and ther is a small DG stamped there tough to see. This bike I drove in a snow storm to Ohio to get. Has a true DG head,,and the DG pipe. I kept the DG parts and sold bike with stock stuff.

Here's another article. My dream someday is too finish my CR250s. 1-1980 motofox cr250,with fox shox, forx, proform pipe, fox banana arm,NOS sun rims,,new metzlers,,bike 2 is a 1980 DG version with the DG head,DG pipe,Simons,DG swingarm,DG gas tank,DG side panels and DG front # plate,,,,,and bike 3 is a 1979 CR250 motofox with the thor version fox arm,,fox shox, simons, sun rims, and custom painted fox gas tank. When done I want to have a 'shootout' of my own with them. I was fortunate enough to gather my stuff up 12-15 years back and I held onto most of it even during the great depression of 2008-20012. I bought several bikes, just to pic a few parts off them here and there for the project,,then re sold the donor bikes.

I like my Red Rocket with the Fox Bent swing arm and Fox Shox. Up front I have a set of 1981 CR250 41mm forks and wheel that I RaceTech'd.

Gumby26,,,,yes I still have all the DG CR250 stuff to put on a 1980 'core' bike,,and the 2 moto-fox CR250s

I have moved 3 times and multiple storages along the past dozen years. Some of my bikes are dismantled, boxed and shelved. Some like the one simon/fox bike is under a tarp waiting it's turn. In order to work on anything I really need a bigger garage. A giant garage is planned this year and then working on them won't require moving 10 bikes to get at one. The white frame crapper bike has the original DG swingarm....what looks like junk was a treasure to me. How many have seen a red DG gas tank for a CR250? Or the red DG front number plate ? Imagine if I die,my wife will have this stuff and tons more hauled away as junk.

A few short months ago this is what that 80 cr250 looked like before I sold it to Gumby26.

Honestly, I think the consensus back in the day is that even with the improvements, the 80 CR gave away more than it gained over the 79. The engine compensated for the handling on the 79, and they tamed the rocket down without sufficiently fixing the suspension and handling.

The differences between bikes now and the swings in which one is better from year to year are a lot less than they were back in the day. I mean, I bought an OSSA Phantom in late 76 early 77 and less than a year later the 78 CR250 came out. Given I was supporting my fix on gas pumping money, I've not felt more defeated very often than the first time I lined up with a bike that looked like Marty Smith's and had 4 inches more suspension travel than I did.

Was the 79 the six speed 250? I know Joe isn't keen on his 81, so I'm thinking that 250G was probably one of the better original mono shock bikes (before the 82 or 83 rear suspension change). It and the RN were the two better 250's that year in 80, right?
