I'm going to say the 70s. By the 80s, riders started having an idea of what it meant to train hard/correctly thanks to guys like Dr. Jeff Spencer. In the 70s, guys would pretty much race themselves into shape, and they'd follow up a 45 minute race with a soda...or a smoke in Joel Robert's case.

The older the era the tougher the riders. 45 min motos on shittly suspended bikes. Puddle bucket helmets with open faces getting pelted with stones. No comparison to modern bikes, tracks, equipment. Today's guys r spoiled compared to one from the 50's-60's-70's

Do you think anyone in the 60 through 80 would trade places with a rider today ? Hell yes. Tons more money , no wrenching through the night. Just like all sports they evolve.

This era has the dumbest fucking questions! That's a fact hands down! It's like this...any era that a guy was involved at his prime or was age wise developmentally worshiping the sport...that's the toughest and best era!!! Hell, I'm 46 and still think Ron Lechien could lap Dungey right now in his sick jt gear on that hand made 85 RC Honda. That's just life!

I can't speak from experience as I wasn't around back then, but I'm tellin ya now, it was a lot tougher in my eyes to race a national (track conditions still the same) in '99 or around then compared to now. You compare dungey's 450 with that suspension to nick weys 125- it would feel like a Bicycle. The bikes were good enough to go fast but man, compared to now... Night and day

I always thought mid sixties guys were pretty tough, big heavy thumpers, un groomed tracks but really I think each era had its tough guys, here's Jeff Smith sittendorf 1964

The older the tougher---like Jeff Smith, etc.

However, along the years the best racers have evolved into those that had the ability to have the greatest disregard for their personal safety. Supercross AND Nationals seem to have more elements of "one mistake sports" (as someone here once said).

It's a different game now.
