Trading 125 for 250f

Edited Date/Time 1/24/2016 6:32pm
Someone wants to trade a 2010 KX250f for my 2003 KX125. Im pretty interested, the bike looks to be in good shape, but he tells me it needs the valves adjusted. He says you have to bump start it when its cold, but it starts fine when warm. Im just worried that itll need new valves and springs or the compression is low and it will need a new top end and/or a cylinder. Thoughts on trading?

Part of me wants to and says its worth a shot, but another part of me says steer far away from this one.

In my experience most times someone says the "valves need to be adjusted" it's more than that. If you're pretty mechanically experienced and can diagnose and fix a 4 stroke engine yourself maybe, but other than that I'd steer clear.

I usually do all the work myself, but Im not all too familiar with the top ends on a four stroke. Thankfully Ive got a friend who has quite a bit of experience working on them that will help me and walk me through the process. He also had a 2011 KX250f that he used for a KX125Af he did and still has the engine, I wonder if anything from that would fit on this bike? Would the cylinder and top end fit from an 11 to a 10? Just if I had to replace it and hed sell it to me cheap.

Also, wouldnt it not being properly jetted for the winter effect how hard it is to start as well?

Assume you're into new valves (because if the shims are off the coating is likely worn and wearing the valve and moving it up), piston/rings/gaskets, and a quickie lap job on the valve seat by a local shop.... should be 500-700 bucks or so depending on what you buy.

If it's still worth it than go for it. If it turns out to less than that you're in the green!

Edit:

For $599 Fastheads will rebuild you head completely with Del West Ti valves . Throw a new piston in her and you should be good to go barring a crank issue!

The valves on that bike have been neglected to the point that they're so tight the engine needs extra help to start. The valves/seats are hammered and will need to be replaced/recut. Also, you can expect to buy a piston, main bearings, and get the connecting rod replaced. If you don't do ask there above, it's a grenade with the pin pulled.

I'd buy it for a grand tops and keep the bike you have. Or not buy it at all and keep riding the KX

Edit: forgot to mention... You'll be replacing the cam chain also.

I did this with my cr125 for a crf250... I have one thing to say...

RUN!!!!!

I had to do a complete engine rebuild. When all said and done I basically trade my clean cr125 and $1200 cash for this bike.
