watching the 82 Anaheim race again, it's just amazing how "unslow" they seem compared with what you expect. these guys were truly the beginning of modern motocross.

anyhow when you look at history and single out those rare racers who were simply faster and upped everyone's game, who were they? (disclaimer - many of their peers were equally gifted and also better in many cases).

Reed and dungey didn't really change anything. RV sorta did with cornering. Ridiculously fast.

RC brought training

I feel as though Dungey brought us consistency.

EDIT, I suppose RC was consistent before dungey,he was consistently first when he raced.

Why should Dungey be mentioned? I understand he never misses races but he definitely isn't the fastest guy out there upping everyone's game. RV put the beatdown on him four straight years in SX and waxed him outdoors in 2013.

Dungey and Reed are know as Consitant . Every rider now knows they have to be Consitant and be on the box every race .

How did RC bring training? IMO, RC might have been training more than most for that era....but he didn't start some training fad.

Wardy, Omara, RJ, Stanton, Hannah, Ummm, these guys weren't out of shape.

In fact maybe in better shape since the bikes weren't as good.

i'm talking sheer speed innovation, not training or specific skill. just in the past 3 decades who pushed everyone past their expected selves and sewed fear into the competition. the tyson effect.

I'm not trying to say Dungey is slow but the question was which riders were simply faster than their peers. When you lose six championships to the same guy it seems pretty obvious you aren't the fastest.

You're not as consistently on the podium as much as Dungey is without being fast...and smart.

I don't think he gets nearly the credit he deserves.

it's not fair to pick these guys apart too much -- the others were brilliant and won championships (they're all lightspeed) but a handful who caused distress amongst the paddock. a niche award, but one worth bestowing upon a certain group.

remember, Bradshaw never won an SX premier title yet was, imo, one of these.

I agree with your comment but that isn't what the OP was incurring about. The question was about raw speed and I personally think RV had more raw speed than Dungey. I may be totally wrong but I doubt a lot of people are taking Dungey in one race for all the marbles against the all time greats. Now a seventeen race Motocross series with thirty four motos is a different story.

That response has nothing to do with the topic. This thread is about speed hence the title "faster". But if that's where you going with this. Everyone always brings up Dungey's consistency, as they should. His numbers are unreal as far as podium% and numbers of races missed but Villipoto is consistent as well. In the five years they raced in the Premier Class Villipoto won six championships to dungeys three. He was off the couch long enough to grab some nice hardware.

Of course it does. If Stewart or (Webb) went out and was two seconds a lap faster at A1, A2, etc, he would be the talk of this forum for who knows how long..even if he went out and wadded up during the night show occasionally. The rest of the field will know they need to adapt...and thus the evolution and the the point of the OP.
