The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that Syrian fighters destroyed a Russian helicopter with a missile, shortly after they forced it to make an emergency landing in a nearby government-held area in Syria’s Latakia province.

A Syrian insurgent group, which receives US Tow missiles, said its fighters hit the helicopter with an anti-tank missile while it was in the air and put out a video showing the helicopter being blown up after one of its fighters struck it with another missile.

Rami Abdulrahman from the Observatory said at least 10 people were on the helicopter when it was hit but they were all evacuated when it landed and before the missile destroyed it.

One thing that is not adding up between the two stories is Turkey's claim to giving ten warnings in 5 minutes. Based on the google maps's scale, the point that the plane crossed over its territory was no more than 10km. It doesn't take a SU-24 5 minutes to fly 10km.

Im no supporter of Mr RasPutin, but Turkey is pretty shady as well. Those idiots have really gone and stirred the pot on this one.

As Tusk tweeted earlier, lets hope cooler heads prevail...

The guy who runs The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is closer to you Jamma, than Syria. He lives in Coventry and his last visit to Syria was around 2000. His friends from the moderate rebels feed him "unbiased" news for him to publish. That doesn´t mean it isn´t right what was reported, I´m just laughing at the wording of the report. Had it been Assad shooting down a NATO plane, the plane would most likely have hit a kindergarten and flames would burn the whole neighborhood which mostly consisted of old people, women and children. But these friendly rebels made sure everyone in the helicopter could get off first, and bring their belongings with them before the helicopter was destroyed by a humanitarian and happy TOW missile which ran on low carbon gummy bears.

So, help me here. Turkey shot down the plane? or Turkmen? Turkmen fired on the parachuting pilots which is just horrific. Why would you do something so stupid?

Turkmen are like moderate muslim rebels in Turkey?

Turkmen want a zone in Northern Syria for moderate rebels so the can fight Assad?

The Turkish government shot down the Russian's (2 Jets) with air to air missiles.
The pilots from each jet ejected and parachuted down.
Upon their descent Turkmen fighters on the ground in the area (basically Syrian rebels - non Turkish Gov.) opened fire on them.
They hit the ground and are believed to be either killed in mid air, or on the ground after the landed (by the Turkmen fighters).

Russia sent a search & rescue copter into the area in attempts to rescue them.
That was also shot down & and then shot again & destroyed after the occupants evacuated it.
I'm not certain of the whereabouts of the 10 search & rescue occupants.

This all happened near the Turkey Syrian border.

Ha! I didn't know that about the Syrian Observatory.

I just copied and pasted that whole passage to be honest. It appeared to (somewhat) verify the video I posted earlier showing the rebels blowing up the grounded helicopter.

Having said that, I've seen two completely separate videos of Syrian rebels firing at ejected pilots today and it was claimed both were videos of the Russian pilots being shot at today. One video was blatantly not filmed in the Latakia province so I realise it pays to be wary when being fed all these bits of information.

helicopter video is an AMERICAN TOW missile, either given directly from us to the terrorist, or one that we sold to a gulf state such as Qatar or Saudi Arabia which love to export Wahhabi ideas and cause general chaos in other countries.

basically any way you cut it. the russians are pounding these POS terrorist in the dirt, and the turks, gulf states, and the US indirectly have hand in killing these russian pilots who are doing nothing but positive things that we arent capable to do in the region.

Those are turkish trained turkmen fighters. They control that area and are fighting Assad and ISIS. Russians are pounding them hard. For Russia ISIS is a secondary target. Their main target is to destroy opposition to Assad. I`m not saying they are good guys. There are no good guys. It`s a mess.

any proof that the FSA in Latakia region have turkish ties? I find it hard to believe that out of all the FSA in western syria, the Latakia faction has a bunch of turks and all the others dont. Also, i believe that the FSA that are in latakia now have spread up from the Homs area.

i also find it hard to believe that if that 'FSA' was just a bunch of turkish fighters and they didnt hide it, that we are arming them with said 60k TOW missles, then turning around and giving intel/support/possible arms to Kurds in the north east region, which are no friends of the Turks at ALL. Basically 'supporting turks in the east then their opposition in the west'? doubtful i'd think.

leads me to believe that the FSA in latakia are no different than any other FSA faction.

Some factions of Syrian Turkmen Brigades does work with kurds.
Turkey supports Syrian Turkmens, but fighting Kurds, USA is supporting Kurds that are fighting Turkey and ISIS, USA is in NATO with Turkey and uses their airfields. It`s a mess.

I believe there is a 20 mile "buffer" zone where they send out warnings to turn around and if you do not comply, expect to be fired upon if you do cross the border.

Ya, I saw that too. American made F-16, with American made air to air missiles and American made radar system shooting down a Russian bomber...then you have an American made TOW missile destroying a Russian recon helo...Turkey is part of NATO...Turkey is funding ISIS through black market oil.

Yeah, not looking good.

They get plenty of warning, and their own people know where they are.

We scramble jets to go say Hi to Russian planes approaching AK all the time....

Wasn't there an issue just this past 4th of July off the Cali coast with Russia?

Edit...
Just found something on it.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/23/politics/us-russian-bombers-july-4-interc…

"Good morning, American pilots. We are here to greet you on your Fourth of July Independence Day."
That was the message two Russian bombers delivered while flying within tens of miles of the California coast this month to the U.S. fighter jets that intercepted them, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command."

Correct. Once you are 12 miles off the coast you are at war and in international waters.

If they start approaching 100 miles they can expect someone to meet them as they get closer.

I Know in AK fighters are on ready 5.

I notice they always say "Allahu Akbar" in these videos. Sounds like some sort of religious term. Is that Christian? Jewish? Or maybe it's Hindu or Buddhist?

Prior to the 21st century, war was organized by geographic segregation and nationalism. WW3 isn't going to look like any of them. WW3 is going to consist of sucker-punches, dirty attacks and chaos on a worldwide scale with no front lines, no uniforms, and no rules of war.
