Monte Hill ( Justin and Josh's dad ) has a section at his track that is very well known to quite a few of the local NW guys.

It's a great idea and it really helps on corner speed.

Top of a hill coming down the track ( engine off , just coasting ) , you would gain a lot of speed and try to coast through as many corners as you could , plus the small straits and at the end of the run try to beat your last mark where you stopped before. It teaches you to carry your momentum better , and carry your body weight to be able to hit corners fast with no gas. Momentum is everything when we talk about corner speed.

Perhaps that is what Dubach is about, do it in practice to learn to hit the right speed / lean angle? Top riders are always in contact with the brakes in corners. Then again you never know what they really do with it. But I think he is not talking about that kind of coasting what we think it's coasting like someone said here before...it's more like "(insert bike noise)"
he talks a lot about coasting in this video.

Okay thanks. He is explaining it in a right hand turn here, where you have to get off the brake early automatically to get your foot straight. That's how Semics do it also in his teaching videos. More interesting would've been a left hander here...

I'd love to here what elite guys that raced both types of machines have to say as well. Reed, Stew, RC, Windham.

Maybe they could shed some light on how they had to change their style as the sport transitioned to 4 strokes.

coasting on a 4 stroke is like having the brakes on very lightly , with the engine braking . so on a 2 stroke were u go from heavy braking to lighter and lighter the straight to light gas to full . were as on a 4 stroke u go from heavy braking to coasting (clutch out ) and using ur engine braking as the last part of being light on the brakes . then go to the gas . Tortelli , Everts and Ryano all teach the coasting technique. look at dungey he does it alot . other riders dont , eg RV ,canard

go look at everts ride in the last 2 years racing , there s loads of times he will go through corners without touching the brakes at all , his uses the engine braking instead. they way i look at it is coasting on a 4 stroke is lightly braking . coasting on a 2 stroke mean u try turn and lose the front end .

One does not coast the corner.... the technique has you braking early when your bike is straight up and you have maximum braking. You then "coast" for a brief moment while you set up for the corner ...then power through the corner.... looking ahead at where you are going.

Your goal is to be smooth and fluid...... always looking ahead...... with awesome corner speed.
