The newest episode of Spectrum dropped today (the last episode was the one featuring Sean Collier) and I will say, it's a must watch. For me personally, it's by far my favorite episode. It covers Dean's emotional roller coaster with repeated injuries after his 250 Outdoor Championship, which goes along with my biggest pet-peeve of this industry and the fan base... the horrible treatment of some athletes during their darkest times. A guy can literally come off being the baddest guy of the year and then can be completely thrown under the bus, especially on the internet.

Teaser: Spectrum: Episode VI - Dean Wilson

You'll see me from time-to-time freak out on people on here for comments such as this. I can't understand how some people can just go "yeah, this guy is useless and a pile. He shouldn't have that ride. He should retire. He's a waste of talent. Etc."

I read this stuff and just think "wow, I hope I never meet this person in real-life... their life must be petty and miserable if all they can do is come on the internet and just shit on someone else". I just wonder, what goes through these people's minds when they type this stuff? Do they just think they're some badass know-it-all? Do they feel better after it, like a bully does?

Listen to Dean in this episode, if you really want to see what that kind of treatment can do to a rider mentally. In this episode, you hear Dean talk about almost quitting after his knee injury he had earlier this year. I talked to him a few weeks after that injury and you could hear it in his voice, he really was considering it. It's not only the injuries that do this to the rider, but the mental and emotional toll that even a regular joe-dork on the internet can put on a person with what they say.

I can already see someone responding to this and saying "Why does anyone care what someone on the internet thinks?"

I don't know... how mad do you get when someone on here calls you out or talks down to you about your opinion? Or just straight up bags on you? It sucks, period.

And if it doesn't mean that much, then why do people even bother saying such nasty stuff in the first place?

For those that have been this person or are thinking about posting something like this, please think about it before you click the post button and ask yourself "How would I feel if someone said this about me?".

Rant over... check out the episode!

I really enjoyed it aswell.

I was just going to check it out and get back to it later but couldn't turn it off.

I've enjoyed all the episodes. Best $15.00 I've ever spent.

I just watched it for the first time. And yes I may be biased since I did the Narration, but I think it's the best one yet. I've done all the narration on all the Spectrum videos for Kyle and pretty much just get the script and sit down with Kyle and read words into a microphone. So I don't even know how it's all going to look till you guys see it too. Lol. But I have recently gotten to know Dean at the KTM Dealer meeting and then later racing at REM so I think I have a little more perspective on this one. Dean is a good dude and though I can't relate to his talent or speed, but after having 31 surgeries I can relate to his pain and self doubt. In my opinion,"Inertia" hits the mark. Great job Kyle. Keep up the good work!

Man that dude has been through so much... sucks! MX can be such a bitch sometimes.. I compare it to having a good looking high maintenance girlfriend haha.. It's amazing how much we'll put up with, just cause we know how good 'it' is!

All the videos in this series are so compelling

I love seeing videos of racers that go under the surface and really get down to the reality of motocross. Each one of these videos have expressed the reality and brutal truth about motocross that not everyone wants to talk about. It seems obvious that the industry does not like to see the reality spoken about hence why Collier was dropped by multiple sponsors.

I knew there was going to be a kyle cowling Josh Grant movie or even video about him opening up about his mother cleaning out his bank and talking about the struggles he went through. I never saw anything about it in forever, not happening anymore?

I'm just going to put this out there. In my defense I didn't text him because I didn't have his number or I would have....
In all seriousness though it's a good episode that focuses on the struggles of a top pro than the usual struggles of getting there.

Not to be a dick, but I wonder if he would've quit if he had an education. It seems problematic that pro riders are in a position that they really can't leave even if they wanted to.

I am excited to see him ride though, he has great style.

It's why riders should never be on Vital. Ever.
11/4/2015 9:30am
If reading the stupid comments from stupid people bothers the riders, shouldn't they just try not to? Is it really that difficult to ignore? 90% of the comments I read on pro's social media are idiotic, yet they still seem to look through them for some reason. I dunno, maybe it's easier said than done.

Michael, I agree with most of what you say, although I don't think people are aware of just how ignorant or impactful their comments are when they post them. It's not necessarily that their 'lives suck' or they're trying to be bullies - I think it's symptomatic of just how easy it is to be a prick on the internet with no repercussion. Most of us are guilty of being one of these people at one time or another. Of course, none of these Vitards would say this stuff to a guy like Deano's face, and more than likely, they are genuinely good people in 'real life'.

It's simply a symptom of the movement in to an Age of Technology, where everyone is a level or two removed from reality on a daily basis.

Anyway, I spent the $15 because of your recommendation, and so far, it's definitely worth it. Thanks!

I'm sure if He was a Doctor He would have quit. Truth is they can quit anytime they want, They just can't make the same money and have the same notoriety.

When presented with the reality of make 100-300K or go to work for 20-40K , the choice isn't so hard.

Unfortunately, when they pay out their expenses for California living, health insurance, agents, trainers, tracks, and etc., that amount diminishes pretty quick. Also, many of these guys are lucky if they see that amount for a decade, so that earning doesn't go very far or produce the greatest retirement plan.

Very true, I went off towards the deeper end. But precisely, people on the internet post without thinking of repercussions. But if they were in person and face-to-face with the individual, they wouldn't say a tenth of what they will on here. They may not be trying to be a bully, but in the end that's what they are for the most part.

I'm not really saying they shouldn't care, I'm wondering why they would even read that stuff in the first place. It's a pretty mentally challenging sport already, I don't see what benefit they could get from reading a bunch of negative comments from clueless idiots on their instagram who's opinions are worthless. I understand if they want to see what their actual fans are saying, but when that makes up about 10% of the comments and the rest is rubbish I don't see how it could be worthwhile for them to look at it at all.

Agreed. While it's not exclusive to the sport - the whole world is operating in a similar way - the stuff Deano mentions is nauseating. People wishing he'd break his legs, etc. are words that parents/grandparents would be painting their kids back ends for uttering. Nobody would have said those types of things a decade or two ago, and yet nowadays, a 16 year old kid on the internet can do so without fear of their actions.

While I love Vital, there are some regulars here (and I'm not talking about teenagers) whose parents would be ashamed if they read a post or two they'd come up with.

Does the smiley face represent the fact that, if Vital proactively banned/blocked the "dumb-dumbs", it would effectively bring an end to the site?

Amen brother. It's good to read someone in the industry with this type of sentiment. I feel like I can relate to Dean a little. I'm just a 23 year old still trying to find a place in the world myself. However, Dean and these other racers are put in the public eye at so young and expected to be super human and impervious to the setbacks the general population faces daily. But it's hard to expect remedial minds to understand that the talents in the moto world are still humans. It seems like the keyboard warriors form an opinion and post it online, where technology has given a detachment from apathy, and the fact that that you never know who is reading what from where. Some of the best racers and industry minds might be seeing what "joe blow" from Belgium or Australia or stateside etc.. is saying, because this is considered a piece of public opinion.

Moral is to look inside yourself before typing something negative, and have decent respect for a fellow human's plight.

Wilson's career was going along pretty nicely, and in fact I was a fan, until he decided to try and race Tomac like a top level a-hole. He ended up with the short end of the stick, lost me and a ton of other fans, and things went downhill from there. His online posting habits didn't help him either. Some people on this site have very short memories, or choose to ignore history, others are just plain newbies to the sport, but Wilson carried a real attitude around before life started kicking him in the butt.

I don't get why anyone would even care what some random on the Internet says or thinks. I get some people kill themselves over things like this.
IMO, the world is becoming just slightly over sensitive. I personally couldn't care less what anyone on the Net says to me.Take it like a grain of salt and have a laugh.

Do you care for that random person? Well, why do you care what they say or think? Makes NO sense.

Anyway. The Consequences.

Donald Trump said recently. "I reserve the right to be smarter today than I was yesterday".

Lessons learnt by our mistakes are what makes us better people.

He was a kid, under more presure than you've most likely ever known. In his mind. He was racing for his life. How far would you be willing to go if your quality of life depended on it?

While you're riding on your bike, how many people are riding on your back?

People have been doing way worse things to each other since the dawn of man. Not saying I agree with it.
