and it looks like the USGP is in doubt, based on the same reasoning, ie: devalued currency

from Motocross Action (online):

"Youthstream has taken the South African Grand Prix off of their 2009 GP schedule and has yet to announce a location for the scheduled September 20, 2009, United States Grand Prix.

Giuseppe Luongo, Youthstream President, said: “Due to this difficult economical moment and the devaluation of the Rand compared to the Euro, it will be not possible to organize the 2009 Motocross Grand Prix of South Africa.”

As for the USGP, most of the American motorcycle industry is waiting to see which track or promoter is willing to take the plunge. Meanwhile, the desertion of the Euro series by 250 World Champion Tyla Rattray and top-ranked Tommy Searle to the U.S. Nationals are serious blows to the GPs."

Jeez, the bad news keeps on coming. The motocross economy seems to be crumbling quickly.

Kind of hard to drive from Europe to South Africa--or the US. When money gets tight, those FedEx planes are the first to go.

wrong, the depth in both classes is so rich we won't even miss them. Both great racers, but people in the GP scene are looking at Philippaerts, Cairoli, De dycker and others. The GP scene is rich at the moment.

That's not the part I wanted you to look at. It was the "As for the USGP, most of the American motorcycle industry is waiting to see which track or promoter is willing to take the plunge." Seems like people are afraid of being black balled here in the U.S or am I reading to far into this? To say you wont miss those riders is a bit dumb. Its like saying you wont miss a couple top 10 riders in the U.S.

Highly doubtful the USA GP will happen. A half a million americans are losing their jobs each month.
A US promoter would have to be insane to PAY to host the event. The "average" american has never heard the word "motocross" and the majority of the core enthusiasts will spend their money attending a National MX instead of a GP held on a 100% man made track.

it will be interesting to see if the actually do have a USGP and where it will be.

I'm hoping it's on the West Coast but I doubt it, probably be a Buds Creek , I'm sure Youthstream will make some concessions to whom ever has the race in America.

Doubt it would be at Budds. It would be extremeley (as one person put it) 'politically incorect' for a current national promoter to accomodate YS.

I know Johnathan was talking to them about it at the last MXoN

Since it's not being run on a date that there is a National maybe it won't be liked but I doubt anything would happen from it, The Nationals are not in Jeopardy from Youthstream any longer.

I did get a chuckle from Geoff's interview , since he said on here Tyla won't be missed, then he begs for praise of the GP's

Tyla is a great kid, i will miss him personally, a lot of people like Tyla, but like I said the MX1 class is so loaded with talent we won't miss him on the track. I might sound dumb, but we won't.

racing wise you guys sure won't missing Stewart and Reed in the nationals. although if Townley doesn't get fit, Villopoto might be just as dominant as Stewart was.

Very possible, I think Alessi will be able to run with Villopoto outdoors.
maybe a few others.

Sounds like Coppins might be making a return to his dominate self too ?

Truth is no matter what side of the pond we can never guess exactly how it will be.

I guess thats why we watch it

Yeah I kinda thought MXA were making a little political capital out of the way they spun the story but thats to be expected. Tommy would certainly have beena title favourite and thats a loss. Tyla on the other hand, despite being a standout in MX2, would have found himself as just 1 of 15 former GP winners in MX1 for 09. No doubt the GPs loss is most definateley the AMAs gain but its not a 'seriouse blow to the series'
