VICTORIAN state primary school students will soon be able to take religious education classes which teach there is no evidence God exists.
The Humanist Society of Victoria has developed a curriculum for primary pupils that the state government accreditation body says it intends to approve, The Sunday Age newspaper reported.

Accredited volunteers will be able to teach their philosophy in the class time allotted for religious instruction, the newspaper said.

As with lessons delivered by faith groups, parents will be able to request that their children do not participate.

"Atheistical parents will be pleased to hear that humanistic courses of ethics will soon be available in some state schools," Victorian Humanist Society president Stephen Stuart said.

The society does not consider itself to be a religious organisation and believes ethics have "no necessary connection with religion".

Humanists believe people are responsible for their own destiny and reject the notion of a supernatural force or God

Humanism takes many different forms. There is secular and non secular Humanism. To say that you are a humanist doesn't necessarily mean that you reject the notion of God or higher power.

I don't think there should be class in a public school that teaches whether there is or isn't a god. There should be classes in critical thinking.

That makes to much sense for a school district to do. They would instead spend tax money on security cameras and fire the security guards.

"in the class time allotted for religious instruction" is where the problem is. Which religion are they instructing in? If it's Christianity, what if a Jew wants equal time? Or a Muslim? Or a Hindu? Or a Wiccan? Or a Humanist?

Allocate NO time for religious instruction and the problem is solved. Let the parents and the churches handle it and everyone is happy - or at least they're all equally unhappy.

You guys do realize that this pertains to Australia which, like the UK, has always required a unit of religious instruction in school. So to eliminate the requirement would take a lot more effort than a school district offering a Humanism class to meet the requirement.

No doubt. I agree 100%. In fact, they can spend more time on grammar and spelling, so 6th grade instruction such as the difference between "too" and "to" is fully understood.

grammar is a must! i'm not sure if it's all the texing or what the deal is, but most people can't spell and it amazes me.

i would think, with all the computers used now days kids would have better grammar, but that's not the case.

it blows my mind, when a kid in middle/high school can't compose a sentence.

A viable religious class would be one which teaches ALL religions from a historical/cultural viewpoint. I took one while in my undergrad years, and it neither discounted any of the beliefs or favored any.

That would be very, very profitable to young people. Once some see the wide variety of religions, including the parallels of their development, it would open many's eyes that this little neighborhood ain't the only game on the planet.
