I have no problem with people hunting, or riding quads or going to ballets...
He did tell me though, that there was so few tags for those kinds of animals because they are only allowed to kill the old/sick animals that are past their breading years and going to die soon anyway and/or those that pose a risk to people. And in which case, I have no problem them killing them.
Another good thing about hunting is that the private land owners (and there are a lot of them in Africa) allow the animals to live on their land because they can make so much money off the hunting (that they don't plow it under to grow food). So hunting opens up new habitat for the animals (and loss of habitat is a HUGE thread to endangered animal populations-lions, rhinos, elephants, etc.), which is helping population numbers.
Kill the old and sick animals that are going to die soon anyway (and if they die on their own they don't get any of the other benefits), get 10's of thousands of dollars from the hunters (a portion of which goes to conservation efforts, a portion of which goes to land owners so they'll let the animals live on their land), the meat from the animals goes to local villages/tribes, the hunters also spend lots of money int he local economies.
Poaching is a joke...but hunting...is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
The main argument for that specific type of hunting is that the money goes towards the people, and the meat from the kill also goes to the people. That area of the world is corrupt as hell (not saying more developed countries aren't corrupt either), so I am willing to bet that money never sees "the local people."
I'm sure the meat does go to the locals, but here's another way to look at it. How about Joe Trophy Hunter spends $50,000 to buy bulk quantities of essential items like rice, water, seeds and gets it to the local people in need through a reputable humanitarian organization. He also brings along the best camera he can get for pictures of a magnificent lion up close, then goes home and gets his best photo put on a very expensive canvas to hang in his house.
No innocent animal has to die just so some rich guy can get a hard-on for shooting it from several hundred yards away. Let the natural process handle the animals, we should not be "expertly picking out" old males because they are going to die anyway.
As a note: I do not condone hunting for a way of getting meat to eat. If you are a deer hunter and spend the time to harvest every bit of meat off your kill, then more power to you. My point of view was strictly about people who pay good money to shoot an animal for the sole reason to put the head on a wall.
How much goes to conservation likely depends on the outfitter. But the outfitters have to know that if they don't take care of the animals the animals will be gone and they will be out of business. So there is certainly motivation there to take care of the animals and conserve. (I know that around here the hunting outfitters are the most outspoken voices when it comes to conservation of Elk and Deer heards, for that very reason.)
Almost all the people I know do both (hunt for food, but also try and shoot the biggest one to hang the head on the wall).
There was a mule deer tag on Antelope Island (in the middle of the great salt lake) that sold at auction for like $360K...if you listen to the DWR, they couldn't manage that island without the money from the auctioned hunts. But even that guy that paid that much money to shoot a 200 class mule deer (like mid to upper 200's) is going to eat the meat or give it away to family/friends. He didn't shoot that trophy and then cut the head off and leave the animal there to rot and waste.
I have friends that shoot an Elk and a Deer every single year (and they are trophy hunters in that they try and kill the biggest one they can find and have animals heads all over every wall of their house)...no way they could eat all of that meat. They fill their freezers and then give the rest away. They don't waste the meat.
Poachers are the ONLY people that shoot an animal and cut the head off.
And as for money that reaches local people in Africa...yes, some of it does. The hunters stay in hotels, and pay the local hotel owners, they buy souvenirs and food, and tip their guides. The outfitters have to pay the local property owners for the right to hunt on their land, etc. So yes, money does make it to the local people.
Oh, and rich old men aren't willing to pay $50K for a picture of an animal. So even though you and I don't understand their desire to kill an animal...take away the kill, and they won't spend money in the country. So as good as it sounds to spend $50K in food and supplies, and then get a picture...it just won't work. Besides, photo safaris are already a thing, and they are way less expensive than that.

Your hunting buddies are different in my eyes. Their end goal is meat for them to eat, and they harvest it for themselves and give the excess away. The trophy head mount is a plus, but their intentions are for survival. The dentist's intention was strictly blood lust.
Would I kill an animal if it were necessary that I do so in order to eat and survive? Sure, but I wouldn't enjoy it.
There's a difference there most hunters don't seem to see.
They could kill two birds with one stone.
Well, that was probably the wrong expression to use but it would remove the animal from the mix which seems to be the plan with issuing x number of legal hunts as well as keeping it alive to live out the rest of its life on a game preserve funded by the $350,000.00 that some rich idiot paid to hunt a rhino. You still have rich idiots pissing away insane amounts of money, and this money would still go to the locals to build and maintain preserves and fund anti poacher groups.
I don't like to hunt, so I don't do it. But I won't let my opinion on it allow me to look down on those that do hunt.
I assume you each meat? How do you justify the hypocrisy in being against the killing of innocent animals while you chew on a juicy steak?
Yes, nature will EVENTUALLY do all the population control...but there can be a ton of damage done while populations are too high (while waiting on nature to regulate the population). Destroyed crops, road kill, sick animals spreading diseases, weak and starving animals all over the place, etc. And in the case of predators (bears, lions, wolves, etc.) with to many of them they begin looking for new territory in neighborhoods which pose a risk to pets, and people. Hunting prevents all of that.
And, in almost all cases, it provides food for people.
Bottom line...hunting serves a purpose, and is needed in our modern society.
I'm not trying to argue with you, and if you read my points then you would see I am in support of hunters who have the right intentions. I am not doing what many people do in an issue like this and paint a wide brush for all hunters. When I look at intentions, trophy/sport hunters put a black eye on hunting.
If the person who is pulling the trigger has the "true" intention of killing that animal for the meat it will provide for food, then that's cool with me. Killing an animal for meat for survival is key to our existence. Getting a trophy head to put on the wall is a plus with the kill in this case. This is the majority of hunters.
If the person who is pulling the trigger has the "true" intention of killing that animal because they really only care about putting the head on a wall, then that's not cool with me. While it's nice that the local African economy gets money from the trip and the locals also get the meat, the reason that animal died is because the person who pulled the trigger wants an exotic head on their wall. Everything else is an after thought. If they really cared for the local Africans, they would invest in their local education and essential supplies like food, water and farming. This is the minority of hunters.
My viewpoint is not an attack on all hunters. It's pointing out the ridiculous subset of trophy/sport hunters.
But I think it's partly because....
a. A lion is a beautiful thing and starving black babies are certainly not.
and
b. The dentist is a single person we can blame and vilify, whereas we would all need to shoulder some blame for allowing that many children to starve. And that would be a little uncomfortable to think about.
Your Jimmy john's CEO with a highly endangered black rhino he just shot
I honestly don't get it, your shooting endangered species but at least he donated money right?
What will they tell future generations once these species are gone?
Hey at least we got paid, and the hunters had their twisted fun
Hey look another one, thumbs up Bro
Seriously, there are way too many people going through divorces, getting cancer, dealing with addictions, starving, going broke, murdering OTHER PEOPLE and all we seem to want to talk about is Simba getting shot. Awww, the poor widdle kitty kat. Boo fucking hoo. If you really want to make a difference, start by getting off your phone, running over all your electronic devices with a steamroller, call your mother and tell her you love her, then WALK your ass down to the local homeless shelter and start scooping chili into bowls for hobos.
We need to start becoming more aware of what's going on immediately around us (I'm talking like within a 100-yard radius) before we concern ourselves with shit happening in an empty field in Africa. People die everyday from texting-related incidents, or let their babies fall down stairs, or back their cars into light poles. Yet somehow people think the people with guns are the problem... If you think that it's a more "natural" action for a person to sit at a computer screen arguing with someone across the country about killing a lion than it is to actually go out and hunt an animal yourself, then you're pathetically ignorant. Humans are animals designed and evolved to hunt (hence our eyes located on the front of our skulls instead of the sides, or our canine teeth designed for ripping flesh, our thumbs, or our ability to see FUCKING COLORS?!?!), not robots to be programmed to believe and regurgitate facts.
Go outside and find something to kill and eat; if you don't like it, you don't ever have to do it again, I promise.
(sorry for the rant, some lady almost killed me this morning on my motorcycle so I'm a little cranky today...
Pit Row
Side note: now that I re-read what I wrote, I realize that it would be kind of tough to call your mother after you run over your electronic devices, so maybe call her beforehand haha
Jimmy participates in the safaris on private game preserves, where the safari companies essentially own the prey whose guaranteed death is their profit center.
Plus do you really believe everything over there is legit, my guess it's one of the most corrupt parts of the world
If it was maybe old Walt wouldn't be in trouble
How does shooting a tame lion that they lured out of an animal sanctuary with a chunk of meat equal skills or any balls....dude was a coward.
Maybe next week the dentist can go fishing at the bass pro aquarium or hunting at the local zoo.
For my own curiosity, I'd like to hear your definition of an "animal sanctuary". I'll give you a hint: it doesn't mean that the animals are tame. It means that humans are not a threat to them so that they are allowed to live in peace in their natural habitats. They are left alone so that they can develop their animal instincts (in this case, becoming the most vicious killer on the continent). They have no logical fear of humans once they do start interacting with them; so, if they feel like eating a human, the lions see no reason why they couldn't/shouldn't kill one. ESPECIALLY ONCE YOU SHOOT IT WITH A GODDAMN ARROW. It's still a friggin lion, dude. Not to mention an alpha-male of a pride of other lions, meaning it's the baddest muthafucka in the area. Yeah, that dude was definitely a coward...riiiight...
A better comparison would be someone jumping into a shark tank at Sea World with a spear.
The dentist I'm sure was sitting on top of some SUV nice and safe shooting the arrows.
Another example, lets say tourist from south Africa fly to the states for a thrilling bird "hunting" trip. They drive to the bald eagle sanctuary and lure an eagle out with some food and shoot it with a bow and arrow.....
To me it's not hunting..
About the old lady that almost took you out ...glad you're ok, now riding a motorcycle on the streets that takes some balls and skills.
How is that fun at all? Shooting a Rhino? How the heck is that fun? I would think it is similar to shooting a cow standing in a field. Is there any skill in that?
Come to think of it i think she left me a "Rot in Hell" sign on the front window of our house too.
Damn I miss her
What a shame.
