Suspension and tires. Great bikes just keep up with maintenance. I had a guy that was short like 5'1/2" and he bought one new. Put an hour meter on it and last time I saw him riding at my place he had like 328 hours and adjusted the valves once. He wasn't super fast but jumped many of the jumps on my track and ride miles and miles of trails up in the mountains.

As maligned as this bike was, it's got a pretty cool little power plant. The power would be terrific in a larger chassis as a beginner oriented bike (better than a pipey small smoker and more capable than the old air cooled engine).

The biggest problem we had with ours for that sort of off track use was that IMO it's way way too loud.

Mess around with the pilot jet sizing, and get an R&D adjustable fuel screw. Then get the suspension done. I loved the one I had.

We went to Lorettas on these. Dean at R&D racing can turn them into a competitive supermini that remains very reliable. You won't have the peak HP of a 107-112, but you will have great torque and a wide power band. Our R&D bike only had two issues in a year of racing, both were when my rider downshifted improperly in mud and blew past the rev limiter causing piston and valve contact. Otherwise we could run them up to 40 hours on piston, ring and valve and everything looked fresh. The valves are steel and cheap. The R&D float bowl alone makes the bike run much cleaner. The bottom end on those are almost like the CRF250r. This is a great piece of engineering. Just clean the air filter, change oil and ride all you want. Enjoy.

I agree. Try to get it jetted properly first. Then dial in your suspension and do all the routine maintaince that we all hate (cleaning filters and changing oil). One worthwhile improvement would be to buy a brake caliper bracket from CRF's Only which allows you to install a dual piston front brake caliper from a CRF250/450. Unless of course Honda finally upgraded the front brake on the new 150r's.
