Hey guys, if anyone here uses strava, please!!! go comment on the web site that you would like for them to add a offroad strava category. I use it for all my training, Moto/MTB/Running and it''s awesome. I don't live in a very populated area so I don't have problems with messing up MTB segments but I know it happens all the time. Sharing offroad trails is important, I don't want to piss anyone off if I don't have too, please help to get strava for dirt bikers.

So many people lose their minds over a KOM, or you get a-holes that just circulate a segment over and over and over until they KOM it (which is totally pointless if you really think about it).
Wednesday I'm going to moto a very popular and shared off-road area - I usually just use MotionX to track my ride. Maybe I'll run Strava too and categorize it as "other" and see how that goes.

Peely, I'm heading to American Fork Wednesday - that is what I was referring to above. Way too much other traffic there - Strava would make it (probably) even worse.
I've been on the trail there before with a group of 5-6 of us and came up on two dudes on mtbs. They completely acted as if we weren't right behind them and didn't pull over for quite a while.
We have enough issues getting along; chasing segment times could be an issue.
Too many guys out there who are already riding well above their skill level. We don't need more idiots. I've been in enough head-ons with guys riding well beyond their capabilities.
FWIW, I use Strava to track my bicycle rides as so I know how much I've ridden and to help identify where I've been. I can care less where I'm at as compared to other riders.
Came back with a shit load of trophies and smashed all the local records lol, I doubt I am popular with the push bikers around here now . What a dick move
Same negative comments could be said about the people who use strava for MTB. You guys talk about shared trail systems but its ok for the people on MTB to use strava as if thats any safer. Your going to have idiots abusing it ether way, why should I be punished because others can't control themselves. Strava has been a awesome training tool for me and I can see that I am slowly getting faster and faster, it's nice to get off the bike and see the real data
i'm just speaking of personal experience of being rail-roaded by someone trying to get a Personal Best on a populated trail.
anyone know if Strava works around your track? that might be a great idea so you can check lap times. i did my first MTB race the other day and one of the awesome things was that Strava noticed there were a bunch of people doing the same thing and linked us together. you could check lap-times, segment times, etc. i thought it was pretty bitchin.
as for offroad moto use, go nuts but be careful. as posted above, there are some serious turds that are formed by that app. it's a great tool if used responsibly
I ride both, and I use Strava all the time for MTB, road cycling, and running. But unless it's a dedicated ATV/UTV/Dirtbike trail, it's a bad idea. The only time shared trails work are when 1) the speed differential is not too high and 2) the faster traffic (dirtbikers) is aware of slower traffic (MTBs) and rides carefully. There are tons of shared trails around me and any time I'm on my dirtbike, I'm constantly slowing down around blind corners in case someone is coming the other way or is on a MTB. If I was on Strava and wanting to claim a KOM, I would have to take them full speed and hope no one is there.
On a MTB trail it's not too bad because the speed difference between the fastest and slowest guys is small enough to give the faster guys time to react if they come up to someone going slower, even around a blind corner. That doesn't exist on a dirtbike.
The truth is, yes, you are being punished because others can't control themselves. There are plenty of other apps for timing if all you want is to time yourself against your PR, but that don't incorporate the social competitive aspect. Stick with that.
I do think it could be dangerous; but you're right, its dangerous on the MTB too.
I don't necessarily agree with the argument about it causing a bunch of idiots chasing lap times to be KOM. Road tracks keep track lap time records and I don't see too many idiots because of it. As we all know moto tracks can vary vastly from one day to another based on the prep, amount of riders there, time of day, etc. so I'm not sure how you could realistically have a leaderboard that meant anything anyways. Plenty of people already put stop watches on other riders and chase or make their kid chase that time.
while i don't consider myself or anyone in here an idiot, i have come across some complete morons on the trail, whether they're on mountain bikes or dirt-bikes.
