I wish when your at the hospital they would stress a little more to you about the bowel movements. I know the main deal is to get you healed up and out but I have experienced this as well as a lot of others. what they gave me and told me to do didn't work at all and later proved to be living hell that's all I will say

KTMShane. I don't post much here , but I look and read. I'm an old dude. You're a young dude. One thing you need to remember is to never give up. Fight, and fight. It will be over, and you will win. I always had hope in my life when bad things happened. I stood strong, but the hope made me have a good attitude, because it makes you think it will be ok. Nothing good comes from a bad attitude. Just keep thinking it will be all right, because YOU are going to make it all right. Good luck to you on your journey, and may God bless you. Never, ever , give up.

Hey Chris. Glad to hear you've been able to battle your demons and win. While it's a road I've never been down myself, I do know it's not an easy one. And after going through the withdrawal of dilaudid and Ativan when I came home, I know now why people don't want to go through that. It was a pretty miserable three or four days.

After my second and third surgeries they had me on 3mg dilaudid every three hours and 1mg Ativan every six hours. They stopped that to discharge me and had me on 40mg of OxyContin twice a day, and then 5-10mg of oxycodone for "breakthrough" pain or every 4 hours. Today marks two weeks post op for me from my third surgery, and I'm down to taking the oxycodone "as needed," so mainly for PT or appointments. Today I tried to go to 20mg of OxyContin every twelve hours. I managed, but I'm definitely way more sore tonight than I previously would be. I'm not sure if it's due to the cutback on meds, the fact that my PT got different orders today so we did some different things or a combination of both.

I've never been a big fan of taking meds. They have their place and in this injury, they've been more than needed. Even my PT looked at me a little crazy for cutting back on the OxyContin asking if it was a good idea since I "still have to be able to get through her daily."

I want to return to work. That's my biggest goal right now still. Even more so than getting back on the bike. But for me to make a full return, I need to be healed and fit once again. I don't want to be a liability to myself or my guys at work. Not to mention being able to provide for my family once again will go a long way towards how I feel about things. Just wanting to do that will help me push through the pain and discomfort of whatever therapy they have planned. Hopefully at some point I'll be able to take advantage of my pool/spa and do some water therapy...but that's still a while off. I just keep trying to find positive things to look forward to and work towards. Finding and reaching small, shorter term and obtainable goals. All of those will help add up to a successful big picture.

The funny thing is when I got hurt, I never imagined it was this bad. I knew it was a tib/fib the moment it happened. I thought even if they did surgery, it wouldn't be a big deal. Man, I was wrong. This has been the injury from hell. It's worse than when I shattered my talus and broke my fib fifteen years ago (same leg ironically) racing an arenacross. I thought that was bad, but has nothing on what this is like.

Keep your head up coming out of your own hole bro. Like I said, I've never been there but I know it can't be easy. You are right about finding true friends. They're few and far. At least at the end of everything you'll know where you stand with everyone and can make some decisions at that point about how to handle it all. If you ever need a buddy...ask.

Shane
Rock on brother! Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! Coming from a tough SOB like you, it inspires me. Sure enough I'm making that uphill climb rebuilding myself. Mentally really as opposed to your uphill climb to rebuild physically. Course for some messed up reason, looks like you got stuck climbing Everest haha! Hopefully everyday is just that lil bit better, it is for me. Just from picking from small details in your posts it really seems like you have yourself on track. Minus the injury of course, but career, family, bitching bikes, and a never say die taking no prisoners attitude. I quite admire you and again, you inspire me. Hope you meet you one day bro. You torched for the summer or gonna be able to make any Natuonals? Dilla at least? I'm a solid jacked up dude I could piggyback your crippled ass around the race Haha! Peace my man and best to your fam

Thanks man. I try to keep a positive attitude as I really do believe attitude is an indicator of performance. Some days though are easier than others. I've had some pretty miserable and dark days through all of this. Luckily I have some great friends and family to lean on to point me back in the right direction.

I like to think I've been able to keep my life somewhat on track. It wasn't always easy. I made some mistakes along the way but always tried to land on my feet. I do feel very fortunate to have a great family and many of the things people strive for in life. Things like a little a great career that I enjoy and allows me to pay the bills. Some financial security. A family that I love and loves me. I guess one of my biggest guides in life as I learned was to not do something that would disappoint my family. It's kind of my life compass. And by family I mean my wife and daughter, but also my parents and grandparents.

I'm not sure if I'll make it to any nationals this year. A lot of it will probably depend on how quickly I'm fatigued. Right now I can get tired getting around the house. It's amazing how quick being laid up takes its toll on your body. The body has a good memory, so hopefully it'll come back quickly. Time will tell.

And it would be great to meet you one day Chris. We will make it happen at some point. You have my word on that.

Time to get ready to go to the doctors...

Hey Shane, just wanted to add my get-well wishes along with the rest of the bunch. You are def. a well respected member on this site and seem like a really cool cat. I hope everything goes well for you at the doctors today. It would be great to see a thread on here regarding the recent accomplishments of the other CC, coming from you, it would undoubtedly be well received. If you're thinking about getting out of the house to take in some racing at Central this weekend I would be glad to assist in any way possible.

So I went to my follow up today and actually got to see X-rays from just how much went into repairing my knee. To say it was a bit overwhelming is an understatement. I couldn't even count the screws. There's multiple plates. And there's even small plates held on to the plateaus themselves by wire. I thought there was an incision down each side of my leg...I was wrong. There's about seven incisions in the repair of this whole thing. The good news is, my doc is pleased with my progress as is my physical therapist. There's still a long road, but today is a step closer to returning to normal. No more big dressing. Some stitches out. All progress...one day at a time.

And for those that are curious...here's some photos.

Thanks star. Not sure I'm ready for a day at the races yet. But I do plan on taking in some racing as I heal up. When that time comes, I'll need help during the day I'm sure. Luckily one of my buddy's has a nice setup for racing so I'll have a place to get out of the way and lay down if need be. I look forward to the day.

And what thread did you want me to do some writing on? Which other CC? I'm not at all opposed to putting something together since I actually enjoy the writing process and it helps keep my brain active instead of simply tuning out. I'm probably overlooking exactly what kind of thread you'd like to see and having a brain fart! It happens more often lately than I'd care for.

I can see why you're not ready yet, that's a lot of work that you've had done, glad to hear you're on the mend. Chris got 19th in the second moto at GH, and is now in the points. His finishes have improved with each successive moto, but it will prob. be difficult for him to move forward much more with limited resources, not sure yet of the limits on his talent, but I am watching closely. It's great to have a NESC rider competing in each class this year with Brooks on the YZ450. Maybe a thread congratulating Chris and thanking those who are supporting his effort will lead to him getting a little extra help this season. Anyway, it couldn't hurt. I hope you're able to get back on your feet soon and continue to improve and feel a little better with each passing day.

Gotcha. I had actually thought about putting a piece together on sponsorship and why certain people do or don't get support, despite being fast or slow. I actually started it and I'll have to see if I can find it. That might be even more beneficial than Chris and Brooks. They've both had some good efforts and I hope they continue to do well this year. I've seen the sponsorship thing come up more than once here and I think I have a good insight on it having worked in a shop (even though I've only been part time for years) for so long. Maybe tonight I'll get to typing...you may have ignited a spark.

Shane if you're back to being able to get around car wise send me a PM on here and I will take care of you getting into Winchester if you wanna come watch some racing.
Our SX nite races start in June and you can see and get around that track pretty good.

Thanks for the generous offer Donn. I'll probably take you up on it once I'm a little stronger. Right now being up around the house for a bit leaves me exhausted. I guess that's the price of almost six weeks pretty much in bed...at least that's what they tell me. They also say the body has a good memory and will come back quickly as well. I hope that part is true. I've lost quite a bit of weight (well, body weight that I probably gained back in hardware). I know I could have stood to drop a few pounds, but this wasn't what I had in mind.

It still feels weird being able to see my leg, the swelling, incisions and all that. It feels weird to feel something other than a dressing. But it's major progress in the right direction. More PT today. We will see what Colleen has planned now that she can see more as well. Amazes me how a 30 minute PT session can leave me feeling accomplished, broken and exhausted all at once.

The struggle continues...but I will beat this.

Not to mention how the meds they give can make you hallucinate. I shattered my Acetabulum broke 5 vertebrae and seperated both shoulders in a race boat blow over. The doctors need to tell you what the meds can do to you. Once I figured out what was happening I could sleep and laugh about the hallucinations. Get well soon.

A couple of PT sessions in since being able to really see what my leg is doing and we have made a few discoveries. The first is that my knee cap is actually ok. There was worries about it getting bound up and getting "stuck." That didn't happen luckily so score that as a win.

The other thing we discovered is that I've actually lost extension in my leg. I'm at about eight degrees where I'm supposed to be at zero. Well, that's the goal anyway. With manual work, we managed to get a degree back, but there's still a lot to be done before I get it back on my own. My therapist has a workout routine for me that makes me feel like I'm training for the Olympics. Sadly, it really isn't that much but it completely exhausts me. Seems like every day she adds some new part of it to torture me. As much as I don't want to like her because of what she puts me through, I do like her. She actually cares about my progress and isn't going through the motions and checking the boxes for her visits with me. Her boss has questioned why she's had so many visits with me in a short amount of time and rather than passing me to someone else or cutting back, she showed her boss my X-rays and pushed back saying she was doing what needs to be done to ensure a good outcome. There's no way for me to not respect someone who pushes back on my behalf to help me come out of this better.

And since everyone who's seen my X-rays seems to ask. The fibula wasn't repaired surgically to avoid more trauma. They say it will fuse itself together and in about six months will simply be a "bump" on the xray. One angle just makes it looks way more displaced than it really is. The other angle you can tell that it's actually close enough to repair itself.

So as they say, the fight goes on. I'm still slowly gaining mobility and finding ways for me to do things for myself. I'm still pretty dependent on others, but getting off slowly.

If you guys are riding or racing this weekend, enjoy it and pack some laps in for a brother that can't get out and rip!

Thanks man. I can't tell you guys how humbling and motivating it is that this thread about my injury and recovery has gained so much momentum. I never thought it would take on a life like this. I look forward to the interaction and the discussion. It helps pass the time and helps keep me motivated to have positive posts instead of setbacks.

I'm truly humbled and can't thank you guys enough. From conversation, to offers to help my family and I, to getting to the races so I can take it all in. You guys are a class act and standup bunch of guys.

Thank you, from myself and my family.

Good god at those pics!

Shane , I didn't read this entire thread ( there is a LOT of wordage here haha! ) But just the same , I hope you heal up good and well and don't let things like this get you down. t seems terrible at the time , but once you're healed it's amazing how fast you get over your past injuries. I took a 6yr layoff from this sport and was never going to ride again after my bad wreck in 05' A little over 3 weeks in Emanuel hospital with double punctured lungs and about 30 bone breaks , I was done! The break I took was good for my mind and I got into a madman work out schedule to rebuild myself stronger than I was before. The good thing is , I re-found this sport again and I am so glad that I did.

Just take it one day at a time brother and you'll be healed up before you know it!

The fib will heal itself. That particular X-ray makes it look way worse than it really is. They usually don't like to plate the fib these days unless it's needed. If you look at one of the other X-rays you can see that the bone does touch. My body will pull it back where it needs to go and heal it. In six months, it'll simply look like a little bump on the X-ray. The miracles of the human body.

And I'm amazed how quick my overall muscle tone disappeared. I've lost quite a bit of weight with all of this. And hoping my body remembers how to put muscle on quickly once I can work out again other than the limited PT workouts. I have a long way before I can get that far though.

Hey Shane, I've been checking back daily to see how you're progressing and when I read the question above, before you responded, I was thinking to myself, "I think he said it would heal on it's own and just be a little bump on the xray." Just wanted to share that with you and mention that the NESC series is at the Wick next Sunday, then Crow Hill the following Sunday. If you're interested in attending either, let me know. All the best to you and your family.

The swelling and non use of the leg caused a lot of muscle atrophy. I had an injury that caused a large amount of atrophy in my left arm. It looked as though I had never lifted a weight with that arm after a couple weeks of not using it. Luckily there's something called "muscle memory".
