for a guy like Me the 4 stroke really was fun to ride and I rode many more hours without any engine repairs than I ever did on a 2 stroke.
That's why I ride my 250f so slow!....I'm just trying to preserve the engine.

This is from my RM125. Top end has 10 hours on it. Started to make a funny noise, so I stopped riding. I thought it was crank bearings, but as you can see from the pic there was a huge play between the piston and the pin. Now i bought a Wiseco... Should last much longer.



I´ve had 4 strokes and 2 strokes. Love both. In the big picture and a longer timespan, I think both are pretty much the same cost to upkeep. When you throw in gas, gear, insurance etc. there is no difference to me.

Let it be 2 stroke or 4 stroke, it`ll take all your money. Just ride hard and enjoy Motocross!! Wink

What's funny is when I went from an XR80 to an RM80 all the kids told me that a 2-stroke takes much more money and time. Because you are always doing top ends. So I thought of two-strokes as the high-dollar machine.

I have had my kawi 450 since 2010 rode it just about every weekend since and I've never even adjusted the valves. I have all the parts to rebuild the top end just never got to the point I felt like I needed to. It still has good compression and starts on the first 3 kicks every time. I consider myself to be a decent rider. I think the main reason it has held together so well is I change the oil every 3 rides and I'm not very hard on the bike I ride a lot more in the low end than most people sections of the tracks where most people are in second I'm in third so it never really gets revved too hard.

Not to many people can ride a 450 hard enough to hurt it.

But they can dam sure hurt it if they are not capable of doing some simple routine maintenance.

I have had good luck like you. I don't ride quite as much but I had an 06 CRF 450 and I am willing to be it had 200+ hour on it when I sold it and had the valves adjusted once. Like you I change the oil every 2 rides and air filter every ride. Maintenance is the key.

BTW, the rest of you... Ride what makes you happy!

I think it's been a great machine. Before the last month and a half, I hadn't even started it in about a year.... Fresh oil, filter, and fuel, and it started on the 5th kick.

While I agree I'm not the fastest on the track (fast C rider/slow Cool , I do have fun almost every time I go out. Smile

You are a lucky guy Huck. I am still riding my 06 450 still haven't had to adjust the valves with just over 130 hours on her. I will probably do a hi comp piston soon just so I can get a good look at the other parts in there. If it looks good though I may just reassemble with new timing chain and adjuster for safety.

on my 250 2t I do the whole top end at least twice a year. If I don't, I risk having the piston fall apart in the cases. On the other hand this has happened more than a couple times and all it takes is a bit of time to clean out, split cases, replace crank bearings, etc. 4 stroke if this happens your screwed out of a lot of monies but probably wont happen as often. Keep your shit full of good oil and dont overheat things. Neither is too bad on maintenance if your nice to em. also, if you ever ride where there is snow try your best not to let it touch your cylinder, things go boom when its smokin hot inside and freezing on the outsideWink I live in Canada, ask me how I know...
