So why do they have playoffs in baseball? Surely they could play each other with a 162 game regular season. I know why, but I'm curious what you think.

Aaron sorry I didn't notice you were in Aus.
You would be limited to what was available to watch for sure

And no I would not want change for 'MX Nationals or the GPs.

SX is such a joke with the sand pits n over unders and heats n semis. That is why I don't think it would mess with the integrity of the sport because to me there is none even as it exist

Anyway nice debating with you and sorry to get worked up. Have a good one Aaryn
Haha all good, I have always liked a good internet debate and I respect your opinion as to why you would like to see change, I just don't agree Smile

The half a bottle of Johnny Black I had gone through when I was typing my original responses probably did not help lol.

Probably why someone posted I argue like a Woman, my wife was calling me a whinge bitch at the time too haha.

As they say don't drink and type Smile

Off weekends Suck, along with no SX or MXGP, there has been no MotoGP, no WSBK, no national racing in Australia and for the first time in ten years I was not racing myself on Easter Sunday at a local race in South Australia, I was going a little nuts.

Dam I am hanging to see some timing from a state championship up in Queensland and some results from the British Superbike Championship just to get my moto fix.

Did sneak a ride in myself Saturday though so all good.

I figured it out! Here's how we'll keep excited until Vegas.

Everybody making it to the main event gets 25 points in the first 16 rounds.

By round 8 or 9 you know who the winners and top dudes are. Adding a chase doesn't take away from that, it just tighten those guys back up and you get 100% from all riders. Not saying RD5 isn't giving 100%, but he sure doesn't need to thats for sure. Its OVER. RD5 2015 SX champ.

I'm with changing something, I think rewarding the riders for highlights that get mentioned already like holeshot, heat and semi wins, fast lap etc.. with points is the easiest change to implement for next year.

Haha that still might not work, if just one rider can make every main and everyone else has at least one slip the championship is over before Vegas.

Why not just give all riders Zero points until Vegas, all or nothing in the last round, the other 16 races can just be exhibition races.

Maybe somebody could score those 16 races along they way and hand out a preliminary championship at the end of the 16 rounds for the most consistent rider over the course of 16 rounds. Then the AMA/World Champ crowned off the back of the final race to make it INTERESTING for everyone.

You mean the Monster Cup.

Points and etc. need to be simple enough for Joe Public to get it. If you have to explain it it sucks.

Not reading all of this thread but it is a verifiable fact that all motorsports that have tried a playoff format realized a decline in viewership compared to their traditional systems.

Altering the points structure is a desperation move, cuts valuable ties with the past, and will not move the needle with the general public one iota.

Some changes (like varying race formats) could be neat but the points are not the problem.

im gonna say no. i get it, you're bored with the season because the title chase is effectively over. but this is racing this is how seasons work. this isnt baseball or football. in fact i despise their current playoff systems as they cater to regional leaders which give way to teams that have shitty seasons, like a team in a shitty division that gets in with an 8-8 whilst a team with a 9-7 or 10-6 dont get to play.

~welcome to supercross, where the rules are made up and the points dont matter.

HERE ARE MY SUGGESTIONS

a two moto format with points awarded to overall positions not moto finishes(unlike motocross which awards points per moto which determine finish)

motos would be something like 10 min plus 2laps and a 2-2 would be better than a 1-3

i would also propose upgrading the 250 class to a full national series. and adding a regional 125 class. it would run just like it has been but limited to 125 two strokes. to allow better involvement lessen homologation rules.

Lastly, a novel concept, how about shortening the series??? drop the amount of events to 14 or 15. this is two fold. ONE if the season is boring due to a runaway, its over sooner, also if its a tight season there are less points to fight over. With the less rounds there can be more breaks in the season to allow recovery for riders dealing with injuries and illness,

Get rid of the rule that give positions 1-4 more points and make it like the rest of the field, 1 point difference.

'verifiable fact'? that statement is worthless without a link.

I would like the sport to get to a point where the top 20 or so athletes are paid well per event. To do so, we need more outside sponsors and more casual fans. I think a playoff will add to the excitement at the end of the season and give more 'horses in the race'. And it doesn't have to be a complete restart of points either. Let's say at the end of 12 rounds, everyone who has a main win followed by the top point standings riders(10 total riders) will make it to the playoffs. 1st place starts out with say a 7 point gap over 2nd who has a 5 point lead over 3rd etc. Also, reward larger bonuses for the hole shot and place finishes to keep the riders outside of the playoffs interested.

A big NO too the chase Idea. I would like to see them give points for heat wins, holeshots and fastest lap times and throw in some joker lanes.
Have a four lap dash for cash for the guys who failed to make the main would be cool. Gives the privateer guys a chance to earn some money. Almost like a second lcq only they get money instead of qualifying for the main.

Because in baseball, you don't play against every other team every single day like you do in SX.

Ive always enjoyed the fact that in racing the guy that has best average results wins the title. Its simple and effective. I dont understand those that want to complicate it ,to artificially make the points race closer purely for entertainment, If you want sx to be sport leave it alone. If you just think its a show, then I guess creating a fake champion wont really matter.

It's funny, I used to be so vehemently opposed to the idea, but I'm starting to be in favor of it. It would make the entire season stay interesting as opposed to losing interest 3/4 of the way through because the title is essentially decided.

I'd also like to see grid starts as opposed to what we have now. It's more exciting to see the top guys racing each other than one fast guy getting a start and pulling away while the rest battle through the pack.
I was the same way but like the idea now. It works in both drag racing and NASCAR and keeps it exciting so I would be in favor of it.

It started in a Football stadium. Let's not think it is so pure and the rules have never been changed. You know you would still watch. We need others to start watching, the older generation is going away.

I really wouldnt keep watching. That would be the final straw for me. I love all forms of bike and car racing , but I didnt bat an eye at never watching Nascar again after "The Chase" and I would have no problem doing the same for SX.

We will have to offend some "purists" to gain new fans.

Interest in NASCAR is at a 20 year low. In 10 years they've gone from having most races on broadcast TV to all but a few on cable. Viewing figures are down 26% over that time. This time frame coincides very closely with the introduction of "The Chase". If you're interested in growing the viewing figures, I wouldn't take NASCAR as a good example of how to do that.

NASCAR started the chase systems in 2004. Viewership climbed again in 2005 and 2006, and since then has been on a steady decline. Undoubtedly, the decline is, at least in part, a correction in viewing from the rapid growth in the late '90s and early '00s. Many of the new "fans" got caught up in the next "Hot New Trend" that was NASCAR. It is no surprise that their interest didn't last. What should be worrying is that they aren't just losing these people, they're losing the interest of long time fans as well, while not replacing them with new fans.

This shows why appealing to the traditionalists and purists is important. They are the ones who have been watching the sport for a long time, and if you lose them, you're left with a bunch of fair weather "fans" who are likely to quit watching once their new-favorite-thing is replaced by their next new-favorite-thing. SX this year. Home Renovation shows next year.

I'm going to say that after watching Houston the only change we need is more off weekends. Maybe a couple less rounds and 2 or 3 more off weekends.

Those guys were all killing it. Maybe the best racing of the year. I don't even care who wins the title when there racing like that to watch.

The intensity was off the charts and I don't think any top riders got hurt. Smile

I think tonight racing proved there is nothing wrong with the current format. Fact is there's A LOT more to follow than simply who wins the title anyway.

I am surprised to read those numbers about NASCAR. A sport I have followed since the mid 60's when we used to see race winners finish 1-2 laps ahead of second place and rarely have a close finish. That sport had to change to succeed into what it is today

I live in So Cal, certainly not NASCAR country. I remember grandstands with so many open seats at Fontana that we could move around with ease to find the seat we want. Not anymore as it is a packed house with every seat sold. Also NASCAR shows are on pretty much 24/7 on my TV lineup. Every move the drivers and tra make is on the tv....every practice session, daily report shows, prime time races. This hardly seems like a sport that is struggling.

I guess we will find out how SX works these next few weeks when there is nothing left to race for except a bonus check to the race winner. Expect a few empty gates when some of the eliminated riders have a minor practice injury so that they can get a jump on outdoor testing

OK so if this is the best race of the year can we analyze what made it happen? Here's a few of my takeaway's:

* New surface where moisture was apparently introduced (based on the announcers comments)

* a radically different layout with the 1st use of a dual direction section and an over-under

* on the broadcast you couldn't hear the idiot screaming before the start over the PA system

* a sand section

* Malcolm Stewart's predictable lack of patience and his bike flipping into the next lane and Osborn ignoring yellow flags

* Josh Hill brake checking his enemy Josh Hansen

* more tight corners where riders were stuffing their way in

* Ryan Dungey starting from somewhere other than the front

What else have you got? I think some people have been reading this thread and making some changes already Tongue
