Dirt Nap on purpose

Open practice Sunday a kid about 12 or so on a 80 lost it right in front of me on a split lane corner. His bike went off the track he was face up right in my path. Only place i could go was over him or down. By the time the dust cleared and i got up on my knees i seen him walk off track. But i was not so lucky. I walked off but left collar bone made the skin on my shoulder look like the st Louis arch broken in three pieces. hospital wouldn't touch it had to see an orthopedic surgeon. Cant get in until Thursday Is this common practice to make someone wait with a badly broken bone?. From what i googled it looks like a plate and screws for me. And no riding until fall. How long before you rode with a similar break thanks.

Dang man. Rough break. Another example of why practice should be split up.

Fortunately enough, it seems like collar bone injuries are about as common as they come and heal quicker than most other injuries. I'm sure there are more qualified people to speak about recovery time than I am. I've never broken a bone.

Yes, that's exactly what happened to me, broken too bad for immediate surgery and had to wait almost a week to get fixed after waiting to see the ortho doc. Mine looked like a z on the x-ray so opted for plate and screws to make it straight. If you'res is badly mangled definitely get plated, if a clean break, i'd leave it to heal naturally. I was out for about 6-weeks before riding.

I agree about split practice but i think it would have been the same outcome if it were an adult. I had a split second to decide ride over his chest or eat it.

I broke mine last summer and was out 10 weeks. I went to the er and they couldn't do anything like what happened to you. I had to wait two days to get into the ortho. I got a plate and some screws. It feels ok now besides its alittle stiffer and I have some numbness still in a couple spots. My was broken in half and the ends were in pieces.

Kudos for risking personal injury to avoid further harm to your fellow rider. I believe positive karma will swing your way down the road. Good luck dealing with the injury, heal up soon brother

I think the reason for waiting is for the swelling to go down?

When I broke my ankle they said they would go ahead and do the surgery now before the swelling kicked in, or else i would have to wait a week...

I had to wait a few days for my right one when I broke it in two places. Plate, 15 screws, and did a race two weeks later (not the brightest idea).

Tough luck for you but nobody wants to run over someone on the ground, especially a younger kid.

Good decision, thank God you had the time and reflexes to do it.

Take your time and let it heal up right to lesson the chance of it happening again in the same place.

Good luck with your recovery.

Not sure that matters. i have been on other tracks that have open practice with smaller bikes. Yes bad idea but i think the more experienced rider should always yield to the less. especially little guys. Was it his fault no, track owners fault no. shit just happens. it is what it is. No blame here. i kinda felt sorry for the kid. he was in tears and just kept saying i'm sorry. I have 2 boys 15 and 13 who were riding with me. I would just pray if it was ever to happend to them someone else would do the same. Its all good.

I don't care about all that, i just wanted to know who else had practice this last weekend, but if you don't want to put the track on blast thats fine too.

Great attitude about it and you're right, sometimes stuff just happens and you have to roll with it.

I called my primary doc who's been my physician 40+ years. See if he could get me into anybody else s office sooner. He told me i was lucky to get in by Thursday.

No riding until fall? Whaaat? A collarbone is the best bone to break, imo. Putting a plate in fixes you right up & you should be back on the bike in no time...............I will say breaking on through the plate is no fun, however................

That's kinda what i thought. Once its plated all that has to heal would be the incision . But what i have been reading on the net say 3 to 6 'months depending on damage.

damn dude, not enough One-A-Day's to help that shit.

i had a similar situation except the kid didn't go down in front of me, he swerved from one side to the other in a high-speed rhythm section. i fucking drilled his bike right in front of the swing-arm. miraculously it spun him around and he just tipped over. i went flying and landed in a heap in the face of the last double and broke my arm. his dad wanted to kick my ass afterwards, but there were a few people that were setting him straight on what exactly happened. it sucked, but luckily for everyone the little guy walked away un-scratched.

I would say 3 months max. After about three weeks you should feel at least 70%. I under estimated how bad the surgry would hurt the two days following. The two days with the broken bone was nothing but the two nights after surgery were a lot worse then I was expecting. My surgery was out patient. Good luck on recovery everyone is different just cause someone is back riding two weeks later doesn't mean you will or should be.

Surgery IMO. I broke mine, did the natural thing, it's never been the same.

The thing that sucks is trying to sleep for the four day wait before surgery.

I had another similar experience. A kid on a 65 was in the gully between the jumps of a double and I was in the air before he even came up the other side. I'm an experienced rider; I was looking down the track and everything - this kid simply did not belong on that track. He was going so slow that it was a danger to everybody.
I nearly killed myself trying to miss that little guy. I put my front wheel down, nose first over the right side of his bike, then steered as hard as I could away from him. I still clobbered him with my left arm and probably my body, but at least I didn't hit him with the bike. I swapped all over the place and managed to save the crash, but of course the kid went down in a heap. He was 100% OK but scared shizless, and of course his dad was yelling like I tried to set his motorhome on fire. Hey man, maybe put your peewee over on the kiddie track until he's fast enough to handle it!

To the OP, good job on missing the mini rider. I hope you heal up quick. My broken collarbone only lasted me about 4-5 weeks. I was 15 at the time, and that has a lot to do with it.

I feel for you. I had another rider who I knew pretty well pass me going into a corner carrying way too much speed and washed out in front of me. I avoided him, but clipped his spinning rear wheel and ended up with the same result. He did say he was sorry.

it should be out patient, I had to wait three days or so for mine, same for me plates and screws. I managed to get in a little sooner because I had a finger that was pretty messed up too. collarbone will feel fine in two weeks or less. I was riding in three with mine, like ML512 said, it's not always the best idea. I fell, re-broke collarbone and bent plate, doc was not impressed lol. I'm thinking it was about 8 weeks after that before I rode again.

good on you for not running the kid over, sorry for the outcome.

These stories are exactly why big bikes and small shouldn't be on the track together. I have some relatively fast boys but we don't ride mixed practices. If they got hurt/caused someone else to get hurt it would be my fault for allowing it...........Any parent that puts their kid out on the track with big bikes is a moron....................(imo)....................
