Wow seems like a lot of people in this thread missed the whole point of the article. How many times have people on here complained about riders being robots and not showing personality? Guys like Roczen, Wilson, Webb, MC, AC, etc... are popular riders because they do show personality. The article is saying that teams and sponsors shouldn't keep their riders in a box where they can't be themselves. Obviously Vurb isn't saying that going on Instagram and posting a pic with hookers and blow is ok. They are just saying that every public appearance on social media, the podium, or whatever doesn't have to be "Ican'tthankmonsternergyprocircuitKawasakiDunlopTraxxistoyotafromescondidomygirlfriendandtrainer".

I think there's plenty of room for personality to come through. That said, right after a race, where you're still recovering from being red-lined on heart rate, is probably not the best time for it to shine.

If you win anything of note and don't thank your sponsors, you're either paying for it all out of your own pocket, or you're an ungrateful schmuck who probably won't have those sponsors for long.

Although I have heard some riders thank sponsors after a race, this hasn't been the case every time this year. Riders have talked about their battles on the track, a pass they made, or mistakes but are not given time to thank those that help them on TV. I don't hear the interviewer asking "who would you like to thank"..

We want to bring bigger names and bigger money in the sport but aren't allowing riders to thank sponsors? Regardless I know that Roczen is Red Bull, Reed is Monster/Discount Tire, Eli is Geico and so on, what is the appropriate way to thank someone other than just reading off your mechanics pit board while your on the podium or giving a shout out to them on IG for a "care package"?

A lot of these guys just want to work hard, improve results, have a good ride, throw back some beer bongs, and jump out of helicopters into Lake Havasu. Is that too much to ask for? Tongue

I think people are confusing personality for poor decisions.

I go to work between the hours of 7-6 every day. In return for that, I assume that they'll compensate me for my time. Conversely, they believe that I won't indulge in drugs, get a DUI, or do anything to jeopardize the company including negative or poorly received social media.

Riders are gething to live their dream, in a job we would kill for. With all the perks afforded to riders, I think it's a pretty fair trade off for their respect and positive representation of their and their teams sponsors.

Everything in this world is a trade off. If a rider wants to be at partys, be around alcohol while training to be an elite athlete that's their choice. But they need to realize that accepting the sporsorship, free bikes, salary, travel expense, etc they are trading off some of their rights. If they're not ok with that, then they can kindly give their spot up to someone who is willing to accept those tradeoffs.

People wanted "MX" and its related activities to be a mainstream sport thinking it would bring all this money into the sport and somehow it would make the sport sooooo much better...

bzzzzzz, wrong.

I liked the sport better when a Factory Semi was a box van and "privateers" had a tarp and high hopes. It was authentic.

Exactly.

And let's face it- to get to the level where those guys are competing at, it takes an assload of dedication, focus
and hard work. You're just probably not going to get the same sort of characters you would as compared
to a booze fueled punk rock band or art school students. Apples and oranges.

That having been said, I do think that are plenty of good, interesting stories that could be shot/written about
some riders. Up to a good journalist/photographer to put it out there.

That's what I thought. I just wanted clarification before the "GuyB is a racist" thread gets started. Wink

the "problem" lies not with the riders, but the fans.
2/11/2015 3:43pm
I actually think it's exactly the opposite: riders like AC, KR and Reed do well with fans and sponsors because of their personalities and their willingness to be non-robotic. Robots aren't shaped by the corporations: they are born that way.

A few cases in point are Nick Wey and Jimmy Albertson. Both are awesome guys that are funny as hell. Both guys could be argued to be getting more support than their results justify, but it's worth it to sponsors because the fans like these guys. Hell, Top Jimmy has done Ronnie Mac forever...comedic gold, and great for sponsors too. No one gets worked up about it. (Or was it Canard? ; )

Reed speaks his mind all the time and brought in a big, outside corporate sponsor because of it. I just don't buy the thesis - I think it's the other way around. I personally think some people just get nervous being around camera and microphones. They weren't trained for this: they were trained to ride motocross.

Hey. Johnnys a good boy and got himself into the rehab!!!!

Once an organization gets so big as the nfl you can stab peiple in white clothes at night clubs and be remembered as one of the best in the game.

We won't see that in our sport.
