Yep, what TMV says... We can't deny there are sketchy places in suburbs, but no-go zones ? No. Especially INSIDE Paris, which is a pretty safe city. No reasons to afraid. And 99,9999999999999 % of muslims are good people. Too bad most people don't realise God doesn't exist, call him Allah, Jesus, Bouddah or RC. There would be much less war, except maybe for oil.

Not sure where the pope's coming from but all this freedom of expression and freedom of speech talk is bullshit. What they want is freedom after speech and that shit doesn't exist anywhere on this planet.

No he didn't.

"If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch," as he pretended to throw a sharp hook. "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

He is pointing out a cause and effect relationship: provoke jihadists by insulting Muhammad, jihadists retaliate violently

Nowhere does Francis say that the attacks are justified. On the contrary: "Francis insisted that it was an aberration to kill in the name of God and said religion can never be used to justify violence."

An interesting article though - I had a great laugh at the huffpost regulars pretending to be offended.

Most of us don't think it should in that context. I surely don't.

For example: Westboro baptist church says things like "god hates fags" and "god kills soldiers because of fags." While I think that is disgusting, it should be protected under free speech. It's not a direct threat of violence. It's something that the French government really hasn't quite figured out yet. They are certainly playing sides in this, and it's sad. The fact that they arrested a guy that is walking a thin line, looks bad for any realistic implementation of free speech.

If a person says "I will kill you if you insult my invisible friend," it should be investigated. Threats of violence are serious. The same way if a suspected mob boss says, "I'll break your legs if you don't pay me."

That is essentially religion at it's core. There is always some deity that makes threats for an afterlife that has never been demonstrated to exist if a person doesn't conform in the only existence that is objectively verifiable.

He doesn't mention islam or extremism, at all. You are adding those terms into the quote from your confirmation bias.

He does explicitly say that he would punch somebody that insults his mother. "If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch" He then goes on to say that you cannot insult faith.

"It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

This is a prime example of the cognitive dissonance that believers hold. I learned from the other thread that you are willing to go to any length to defend your beliefs, including renouncing all other christians as "not true christians" What you aren't willing to do is question your own. You simply place that burden on other people to justify their beliefs, in order to shelter your own irrational beliefs from scrutinty.

http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Non-Moto,21/common-core-and-islam,1276219

It's the same thing as that thread. You aren't interested in truth at all. Yet, you do stop short of using the word immoral when the bible has it written clear as day.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way.... Your problem with what I said, is a single sentence. I should have made a more clearly defined statement.

What I said : He attempted to justify the murders.

What I should have said: The pope gave a commentary that highlights the fundamental similarities between christianity and islam. His modest side supports freedom of speech, and his religious side says that you can't mock faith without expecting some violent reaction.

That's the problem with
people like you. You're comparing Islam with Christianity and missing the point.

Nobody has a problem with Islam, they have a problem with radical Islam. Jewish folks, Islamist folks, Quakers and Baptists can have whatever inflammatory language they want in their holy books- just don't use that book to justify beheadings and mass killings.

In the interest of brevity, I will pass on your red herring about me being dishonest.

What I should have said: The pope gave a commentary that highlights the fundamental similarities between christianity and islam. His modest side supports freedom of speech, and his religious side says that you can't mock faith without expecting some violent reaction.

Thank you. This statement is less fallacious than saying that he was trying to justify the murders.

Trust me, I am not an an apologist for this clown. Pope Francis has said plenty of things that I disagree with. Many view him as a blatant liberal who is hijacking Catholicism.

The first time through the article, I thought that the essence of what he was saying was that Charlie Hebdo should have seen this coming - a conclusion I came to previously. I was surprised that I actually agreed with Pope Francis on something.

Christianity itself does not promote violence. If Francis is saying that violence is the proper response for anyone who insults any religion, or if he has literally issued threat of violence to anyone who talks trash about his mom, then I would love to chat with him here on this Vital forum and tell him that those words do not accurately reflect the teachings of Christianity and I would be interested in hearing how he would defend them (and the rest of his ridiculous satements that are beyond the scope of this conversation).

Given that he says exactly the opposite elsewhere in the article, and it is stated more explicitly, ("religion can never be used to justify violence") I wonder which of these two opposing views he really holds. If it's the former (the one you've quoted) then I would welcome the opportuity to debate him.

I guess my point is that in the US we have a constitutional amendment that protects free speech. But it only protects it from government abridgement. That's it. People give it way too much power. It does not protect you from the consequences of your words. It's not possible. Too much of the conversation after the massacre in Paris revolved around this so called RIGHT of free expression. Everywhere I looked and listened on TV and radio this became the rallying cry. It sounded like a bunch of people pounding their knives and forks on a table, demanding knives and forks and a table to pound on.

Way too many people think that you should be able to say or express anything you want and your government will protect you. More misplaced FAITH.

While I undersyand the distinction you are trying to make about freedom of speech being freedom from prosecution by the government, I disagree about whether there are protections in place regarding reprisals, etc. The very fact that you aren't prosecuted is itself a "protection", not to mention that in the vast majority of cases, assaulting someone for their speech or expression is punishable by law and that, in my limited experience, "protects" an awful lot of people from getting their asses licked because of what they spew from their mouths.

Way too many people think that you should be able to say or express anything you want and your government will protect you. More misplaced FAITH.

The thing is here in France, the french law is above EVERYTHING, this includes any kind of personal belief and religion law, this is something some people find hard to understand.
If you are on the french soil, then you have to respect the french law.
Concerning the free speech, it is really important in our constitution. You are free to say whatever you want on ANY subjects as long as what you say respect the law.
Yes, it can hurt some people's but as long as you don't express racists thoughts, insult people etc... and don't break the rules, you can't do anything BUT USE THE LAW if you feel you need it.

That's why Charlie Hebdo kept on drawing on Mohammed this week, cause in France, they have the right and nothing can't stop them from doing it. It may hurt people in Saudi Arabia, who cares, they are drawing, not threatening or killing anybody. They never meant to joke about Mohammed and be mean to muslims, they're making fun of extremists, they want them to be butthurt and it works, the problem is some non-extremists people are not educated enough to understand that and now I see inhabitants of Niger burning churches there, how stupid is that, they are mixing up everything. Most journalists at Charlie Hebdo are or were atheists fighting for secularism. They are attacking christians? France is NOT christian, France is SECULAR.

The one, extremists wanted to kill the most was Charb, the director, he was openly pro-palestine...

Unnecessary and ridiculous, seems like she's never heard of the first amendment plus they already apologized several times...
The translator did a really poor job too, she was completely lost in translation. Paris mayor did not say she wil sue Fox, she said she could. But it won't happen anyway...

FYI, after having tried to contact them for explanations with not much success, Le Petit Journal, a small french TV show about politics, news etc... asked their viewers to first send e-mails to Irena Briganti (Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications for FOX News and FOX Business Network) asking Fox to verify their information because they obviously were wrong and misinforming the american people. She received approximately 20.000 e-mails. This resulted in journalist Nolan Peterson apologies letter to France.

The problem was, we wanted Fox to tell America the truth, not just apologize to us so Michael Clemente (Executive Vice President) received also his share of e-mails asking for Fox to apologize live.

This plus all the twitter accounts created in England and France to joke about them, the other rival channels making fun of them, I guess they got bored of the game and verified their information...

The Daily show is an excellent vehicle by which to shape ones world view. That, combined with a social media obsession, can do nothing but guarantee success.

It reminded me quite a bit of hillbilly, and perhaps others from those states.

I'm not ot sure how you could dish out social media obsession as some type of causal link here, considering I have exactly zero social media accounts, but I do watch The Daily Show from time to time. You got me there. Of course, the claim that it entirely shapes any persons world view is pretty insane.

I'm going to go with the point of the satire rubbed you the wrong way.

I liked the satire..if that's what you are going with.....very entertaining...

I could think of no one greater to reference...from time to time.
