One of my friends is looking to get her son a new bike. Hes been riding on a 2000 yamaha 50. He Loves ryan dungey and ktm and wants a ktm. Would a Ktm sx50 junior be too big? Hes average sized for his age. Anyone have any advice on kids and bikes at this age?

CRF50 or a pw50. Either one would be a great beginner bike (yard bike). A 50cc race bike is a completely different animal.

Hes been on a pw50 for a year already. He really wants a ktm because he loves dungey. Obviously i assume hes gonna race once hes able. Just wondering if its too soon for a ktm jr50.

Get on ebay and buy a set of orange plastics for the PW50 and get a sticker kit made up.

Chads done it for his son.

If the frame on the PW has not cracked / stretched , which they all do under hard riding conditions, then the PW is probably enough for now. Once he breaks the first lower steering stem bearing / race, you know it is getting close to the time to upgrade the equipment.

The CRF/ TTR are a bit heavier bikes, the seat height is about two inches taller than the PW.

You can make the PW look pretty much any way you like. Here is one of my old PW's.

Yep, great idea. I know KTM makes several different 50's. I have a friend who's son recently started riding a KTM 50 but I'm not sure what model. It's a pretty tall little bike and his son is 7. One thing to consider is that everyone says 50cc MX bikes are maintaince nightmares because of the clutch. It requires constant maintaince. If your lucky, it's just changing the oil every few minutes (yep, guys that race them change the oil after every moto). You don't want to scare poor ole' Dad away from dirtbikes!

This thing only has about an hour on it. Bought it new for my nephew. He never even asks to ride it.

PW50! Got one for my daughter on her 3rd birthday and my boy its already wanting one for his 2nd birthday. Might end up getting her a KTM and letting my son have the PW50. Great bikes, cheap to work on and plenty of them on craigslist. Got mine from a dealer in Oklahoma for 1199$ out the door it was a 13 left over.

How old is your daughter now that she could get on a ktm?

Ktm have the SX mini 50 which runs in the oil injected class being he has experience that would be a great bike. It can also rain in the 4-6 class I think it came out in 2012. It's call a mini. It's not a jr. The mini can be de tuned as well don't get the mini and "jr" confused. it's not the mini adventure either it's just called mini 50 oil injected. Has good suspension and reliable.

Yes, either the Ktm 50jr or adventure will work just fine. The Adventure is air cooled and a bit less aggressive. Its a great transition bike from PW to full race 50...

My son rode a PW 50 Yamaha to start out. His next bike at about four and a half years old was a KTM 50 Mini. The Mini was a great bike.

If he's already used to the PW and can RING IT OUT then buy him the SX mini. It's a good bike for that age, you can tune the clutch to go easy on him until he can man handle it. That is what I did, my boy raced both PW and 4-6 50cc classes.

KTM has made (not in their lineup currently) an air cooled Jr Adventure; it's quite small and makes a great first bike. Unlike the liquid cooled Pro Jr, it's not maintenance intensive, loud, or intimidating. Although many of the Pro Jr parts will bolt on, once the little guy wants to go really fast, it makes more sense to simply buy a race model.

That said, the idea of buying orange plastic for the PW really makes the most sense.
