Vital Stand-up jet ski needs to be a thing. Almost as much fun as moto, more fun if you can get one out in the ocean.

Hell yeah! Extremely challenging as well! I guess they run pro sanctioned events nowadays as well. I never knew that.

My back hurts just thinking about a stand up ski!

Stand ups are awesome. Makes other jet skis feel like a water quad. Nothing gayer than a water quad.

I used to play wave race for hours on end as a kid.

Getting run over would be my greatest fear racing Jet Skis. Only thing above the water for the ski to run over is your head.

Fun game

Stand ups are great until you realize how empty they make your wallet. I just sold mine this year....and what I had invested could have net me a down payment on a house.....

I surf rode standups for years...just recently got out of it..it is really fun but the "sport" has changed allot over the last 10 years and not for the better...it would be similar to how freestyle moto went from crusty 1 to people hitting ramps who can barley negotiate the berm before the jump..

It would be good if more people with moto skills got into it but for surfriding it really helps to have a surfing background as well...I went with some friends to do an episode of nitro circus where TP199 and crew were going to backflip a ski in the surf...they could barley stand up for more than 5sec..it was pretty funny..I don't think there are many things that they can't pick up on but that was one of them..

It is an incredible workout though..my buddy and I used to go out and do solid motos in the surf..keeping on the pipe the whole time blasting waves and airing gaps and stuff until we burned 5gallons..Even after doing that 3days a week for 7years I would be literally crippled after the weekend...you entire body would be destroyed...riding at a high level/speed in the surf is not a pussy sport thats for sure..

Haha if you just bought a superjet in the first place you would have saved allot of $$...I remember when you first started modding that thing in like 2005 on xh20

New Years Day...maybe 20 years ago, or more.... A dozen of us built a large fire along the Trinity River bank in Nor Cal, the river bank freshly covered in new snow. We broke out some Crown for a quick snort, but it was more of a lick and a promise to get back to it.
We dropped our stand ups in the water and then went on an epic "trail" ride, working our way through channels and across rapids, log jumping where we could find 'em. No dry suits, just wet suits. We rode at least 24 miles up and back to the warmth of the fire and Crown.
Got to get my ass in gear tomorrow... I'm getting old!

I saw a guy lose his foot at a jetski race. We had a foot drag technique for the stand ups and a guy slammed his foot between the two hulls chopped it right off.

love the Wave Race 64 game, i used to beat down on Expert mode. i think the game was ahead of it's time really.

regarding stand-up jet-skis they're bad ass. i've only had the opportunity to ride one a few times and it was incredibly hard at first but so bitchin once i got the hang of counter steering.

as for wave-runners being water-quads, i'm more of a boat guy but they're fun time to time... i have never seen someone not smiling on a wave-runner. quad riders however are either one or the other, gay or a terrorist. apples and oranges.
that said, people can be dipshits on both, witnessed some dumbass moves from people on wave-runners and quads.

Early 90's I was running a Yamaha Superjet 650 fully tricked out. I would ride 8, 9, 10 days straight before I took a day off. Rain or shine. My riding was freestyle lake riding. The more powerful, the easier it was to ride hard. Well, within reason I guess. Nowadays guys can do flips with just a blip of the throttle. That's insane. Nobody did flips on flat water early 90's.
I would buy VHS tapes of the pros and then learn their tricks. Larry Rippenkroeger was the main freestyle stud.
Probably the only sport in all my 47 years I could brag and say I was good at. One of my biggest regrets was selling that ride. I ran into the guy who bought it last year and he said it still runs like a fkng bulldog. I went home and cried a little.

In addition - the 90's was the first flood of sitdown style jet skis. Then all the accidents started happening. Those sum bitches would run 60mph (yes, faster today) and turn on a dime. Zig zag all over the lake right into the path of boats and boom, someone is dead or injured. Young kids would ride like assholes, not realizing they where riding like an asshole.

To the guy above talking about emptying his wallet, that can be true. because once you mod it, it's SO much more fun to ride. But once you mod it, it's takes constant tinkering and fixing shit. Anything that runs in water seems to wear out faster.

I rode one once. It was in the inlets in New Gretna and I fell off the side of the thing and it shot off into the woods. Shit was pretty funny from what I hear. Prob the most awkward thing I've ever operated.

I wish you would have rode mine when it was all done. Sub 300lb with fuel, 7 inches shorter, much lower center of gravity, full race gas Kawi engine.....but then again it really was not much of an SXR. I sold it to some lady who owned a bunch of Superfreaks in CN....her kids liked it better as a freeride boat than any of their AM hulls.

that was the peak of ski play for me, we'd anchor out bouyes of empty bleach jugs, Bel Ray and/or duck decoys. A bunch of moto heads making a race of it. If someone dropped in front of you you could throw your body in the water and stop your ski quicker than a dirt bike. But then came the Wave Blaster...and all of the sudden we had 16 year old girls that had been riding for 2 days on your ass with no clue or ability to stop. It ruined some fun and a few hulls...

Here's an old vid of me in some descent waves...I have some better footage but the waves arn't as good...nobody wants to film when the surf is good..

Here's me playing around with some buoys in some sloppy surf...my ski definitely wasn't setup for buoy riding but it was still pretty fun..

Haven't watched these in a few years..makes me miss my ski

I still have a 550 sx and 550 js, that's how old school (and old) I am. Didn't get good at it till after the sport had faded, sucks. I'm thinking of bolting them together side by side and building some kind of hybrid sit-down dork machine.

Man I got tired just watching you Andrew. The lake would get churned up with a group of you chasing each other around and afternoon wind chop could beat the crap out of you. But surf certainly ads another demension to it. Stand ups are great for cross training fun.

These two guys were two of the best surfriders ever in my opinion..

Scott Watkins circa 1991...you can see the difference between Watkins and MacCulgage who is the "goat" of racing...watkins surfed and it showed in his riding...guy had that 550 so dialed in

Joe Kenny circa 2005

I won a couple western regional championships, 2nd at the national championships and 3rd at the World Finals back in the early 2000s.

My old man got run over by a mastercraft that was going about 35 mph. Old bastard was fine, minus almost losing an arm.

Rippenkroger...

Badass ski rider..super cool guy and Bruce Willis's stunt double..he's been a big time stunt man for years....I did interviews with Kroger and Watkins for an online jetski mag I used to write for but I dont think they are online anymore..I still have copies on my computer I think...good reads..
