I got a welder, porta band and tubing bender and thought how easy it would be to convert the thing to haul a bike and have room for can and stand.
It was at northern tool i think.
Have no idea on the answer to your question though, just thought I'd throw that out since seeing it the other day.
I also recommend the ProTaper swivel straps.

The problem is, every ounce put on in these is tongue weight. Unless you want to beef us the suspension...well, even still.
250lb bike, 100lb carrier...Its just too much. Especially if you start adding gas cans. If you were closer, I'd let you try mine and you'd see. Its fine for bicycles, and even gas cans. It might be acceptable on the back of a 1 ton truck, but a trailer is better.
This is the one I'm looking at but it's an eBay special. So I'm weary to pull the trigger on it.

I've had this thing for 7 years, and have used it to haul modern and vintage bikes all around, up and down, the east coast -- not one single mishap...ever.
96 Trooper
99 Explorer
99 Pathfinder
05 Volvo XC90
The 96 Trooper and the 05 XC90 didn't even notice the bike was on the back. The Explorer and the Pathfinder did fine, but could tell there was 350 lbs on the tongue.
So hitch hauler all the way baby!!
But I do have a three rail trailer for when I am taking some buddies or my kids...
Pit Row
They also have a gas can accessory available. And its made in the USA.
Also consider the Kendon three rail stand up trailer (http://www.kendonusa.com/) - I have one of those as well. Its great because it stands on end for storage and tucks out of the way in the garage. Again - made in the USA.
