Hey Patrick, from the view off the roof you should put in some theater seating up there for guests to view the track!

Awesome place you have going there. Can't wait to see the after photos.

When you get the lighting figured out, let me know what you chose. I need to come up with a better solution for my 50' x 50' shop. It just swallows the current lighting and as I get on in years, I hate dark and shadowy areas when I am trying to work!
I thought of that as soon as I climbed up there for the first time. It's crazy how good of a view you get of the track. It's definitely going to be fun to watch a good battle from up there.

WalMart is exactly 4.3 miles from the end of our driveway. I know it looks like we are in the middle of nowhere but we are just on the edge of Bend's South city limit. All the view shots are to the West where the National forest stretches for the next 70 ish miles to the Willamette valley and I-5 corridor.

LED is the only choice, for all the reasons mentioned. They are also WAY brighter than standard fluorescents. I haven't seen them for under $45.00 a tube, but I work in the Motion Picture Industry, so everything is overpriced for our industry. $11 each would be a NO BRAINER, IMO
How many of those types of lights will I need to cover a 42'x42' shop with 16' high ceilings? I want it so I have to wear sunglasses just about. I have a bad astigmatism and when the light isn't sharp I fall asleep or get cranky or both Smile

Thanks for the link MXtoXS. I really need to make sure I light it right, the ceilings are 16' high and regular flourescent lights won't do the trick. I'm also figuring out cabinets and work benches etc...
Simple way . Consider 36 watt led floods that go into a regular porcelain socket, up that high they will have a good spread, a little expensive at first, but simple install, low running cost and low maint cost. Try one in a trouble light with out the cage to test.

And last they are rated for 20-30000 hours versus the 2000 hours out of a standard fluorescent T-8. You can find the bulbs on ebay for about 11$ a piece.
Do they mount right into Fluorescent ballasts?

Hundreds of lakes. For perspective, we live just North and to the West(left) of the High Desert Museum on this map. There are hundreds more small lakes that aren't on the map.
The next two pics are not mine(first one is Mike Putnam and the second is pacific crest stock)

This picture is taken from the West side of Mnt Bachelor/Sparks lake, we live exactly the opposite side about 7 miles East of the mountain.

There are still places up here you can roll into to a private free beachfront lake camping spot and unload dirt bikes canoes boats etc... within 30 minutes from the house. These last few are taken on Wickiup Reservoir, this past summer. This camp site costs $0 to stay at. It's one of our favorites and is a little further than some of the others, it takes about 45 minutes towing the 5th wheel from the driveway.

BTW I am trying to tempt some of you guys to move here Smile I am a realtor and a builder Smile

If ya use the 4 ft led retrofits, you just remove the ballast and direct wire the sockets. The floods just screw into a regular light socket. Save any where from 50 to 70 percent on power use.

I've never tried this brand myself, so I can't speak for the output or quality, but great price.

Whatever you end up doing with lights (LED 4' tubes, LED can lights or even fluorescent fixtures, make sure you use 5500 kelvin tubes or flood lights in the cans. You'll thamk me later !!

Yep, the door height is 14'3" and the bay is 42' deep complete with sewer dump in the slab. It will also have a water and electric hook up in the wall as well. I only have a 28' toyhauler but I thought if I ever sold it or bought a bigger motorhome I might as well set it up right the first time. I am building a pretty large enclosed shed roof off the left side of the shop where I will keep the 5th wheel most of the time but when needed I'll bring it in. There will be a bar complete with kegerator going in as well Smile
Wow. All you need is a closet large enough to hold a bed and you have the perfect house!!!

Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it. I am only going to use tube fixtures, no cans. The link you sent for the bulbs, what kind of base or ballast would I purchase to put them in?

That is a lot of shop to light up, great problem to have. Are you going to light up the entire shop equally bright? The lumens output is about 20-25% higher than the fluorescents. I have a low ceilings so hard to compare. My highly lit work area of about 24x15 has 8 4ft fixtures. I like lots of light as the eyes aren't what they used to be. You have great mountain bike trails in your neck of the woods. Did the high cascades 108 miler in 2011. Sector 16 is one of my top ten trails.

Wow that's really really nice.

I would love to move to the northwest, and seeing these pics makes me jealous.

Congratulations!

Dirty Smile,
Great looking location you have there and beautiful property. I also grew up in Coudersport on US RT6 at the top of Denton Hill.
I was curious if you are related to smokey and the old Hodaka shop in sweden valley? My folks used to own Potato City in the 70's and 80's. I also miss riding up there but have been blessed with some great riding in the south just no sleds....
anyway really love the thread and hope to someday use you for my realtor/builder out there.
Cheers.

Exactly. We changed out the T-8's at work and the LEDs are more better. All around.

It sounds like you know what you are talking about, thanks for the input man. Having shitty eyesight I want the entire shop lit equally(extra) bright and especially with LED's the electric bill shouldn't be a big deal. I was looking at the LED bulbs and there are different angles of light etc... With the 16' ceilings is there a certain angle of light that will work better? Power /wattage of the light...? I am willing to spend what it takes on lighting this shop properly. You ride the cascade 108 miler? I always wondered who those crazy people were Smile Sector 16 is one of my all time favorite trails here in Bend. I like to shuttle up to Dutchman flat and jump on Flagline and climb up around the North side of Tumalo Butte then take it back down to sector 16 to upper whoops , lower whoops, Phil's canyon all the way back to town. We usually park at Cascade Lakes Brewing and finish the ride there. Smile Have you ridden any of the new Tylers Traverse or Tiddlywinks? Funnr(correct spelling) is pretty sweet too. COTA built that trail for Super D races etc... There are so many epic trails here it is pretty awesome. I am a 15-35 mile rider and that's about all my back and ass can handleSmile We have equally epic Moto single track here but I've been scolded for mentioning that on here in the past Smile Let me know when your here next time.

Ross, I didn't know Smokey but we used to go into the shops there. Who owned the Suzuki dealer on RT 6? I didn't live there full time but we were there about every other month or so. I knew Andy Bear we used to race with him in the D6 circuit, he and his wife owned Coudersport Well Drilling that was right where 872 met Rt 6 in town. That is crazy, my Grandmother's favorite place to take us all out to eat was none other than Potato City! We were probably there at the same time at least once or twice Smile Potato City is a landmark of my childhood. I also spent a lot of summer days swimming and fishing at Lyman's lake. I just saw a show on PBS not too long ago about restaurants and they had a pretty good chunk of the show featuring Potato City. I was blown away ! My grandparents bought their little place out near the Odin Grange South of town on 872 back in the late 60's. I was born in '72 and pretty much started going to Potter County when I was a baby up until I was in my late teens. Grandma sold the place then I moved West when I was 20. The last time I was in Coudersport my wife was pregnant with my now 18 year old son. One of these summers I want to take my three boys to Potter and show them around.

That was Eckerts. Art was the Dad and Doug and Andy were his kids. We used to ride with those guys. I know Andy and Sue Bear Both. So cool to meet someone on Vital that knows about Gods Country. Look forward to meeting you in person some day and sharing stories. If you ever head back to Potter just ping me, my dad still has some land across the street from Potato City and my brother in law rides and races and still lives up there and could show you some cool practice tracks. We had some good ones behind potato city that you could probably still ride on and had some great drag races on the old airport out back. (you would pass it on the way to Lyman lake) Really great memories from there and it really hasn't changed too much. There is actually a McDonald's in town if you can believe that. Looking forward to the garage build, Cheers!

Ha Smile I get that a lot (about the Coors light) we have so much great microbrew here, I sometimes get microbrew overload. I just downshift to the light shit. It's kind of a cultural thing, when partying with your buddies here in Bend you end up starting with a couple growlers (or keg) of a fresh hop something or other( Deschutes fresh squeezed, or Boneyard RPM IPA, 10 Barell sinister etc....) (maybe even a local distiller whiskey or vodka/gin)you can only have so many of those big boys . We extend sessions with the light stuff (PBR,Coors,Keystone,Ranier,Hamms etc..). The amount of small breweries and distilleries here is getting out of hand. We need help Smile

When I was homebrewing, I loved using Willamette hops for aroma. Awesome hops. If you want to start making some homebrew...you have the location! Silly
