Potential Australian GP

The goverment, council or whoever is kicking in that money wants a return on investment by way of dollars spent in that town. That's why they have the night time entertainment and the much needed accommodation. It's also got to be accessible easily by out of towners/staters flying in. That will be the first priority. Facilities 2nd and track 3rd. It's a business and what the riders think of the track comes well after money.

Barabool / Macadams Park is / was something special:

Manijimup : I've been there many times over quite a few decades. It seems to have lost something over the years. Nonetheless, a good track. Plenty of good tracks here in OZ - but so many are in bum fuck nowhere. The curse of a massive country.

Williams is a promoter - he'll take a GP to wherever he can get the most money, from whichever state / local government that he can con....oops, persuade into giving him / Luongo money. Perfectly understandable - hell, I'd do the same if I were of that breed.

Murray Bridge is a track that I recall , from a long time ago (it's quite a few years since I travelled all over OZ for MX / Motorcycle racing in general), as being very, very good.

Broadford will probably be the one - well, unless the state government remembers the money they sunk into it before. MA - Motorcycling Australia - basically owning it, almost ensures it going there, if the Vic gov. will chip in.

OK, I'm biased, but something like a GP, at Eastern Creek in Sydney, could be of the most use for the sport of MX as a whole, here in OZ. There have been numerous 'noises' made over many years, of having a Dirt Bike Park at Eastern Creek. Hell, the impact on the sport of having a Dirt Bike complex in the middle of the largest city in OZ, would be of enormous benefit to the sport. But, (I think) the ARDC / the Drag Driver with the Dragstrip have been the big winners from a track / area designation that came from an initially Motorcycle driven project / venue. There's quite a lot of room there, what with it being in the usual 'power line corridor' - hell, around the world motorsports venues are so often dumped amongst powerlines, it's a miracle we all don't have 2 heads - so another, rare investment in a legitimate sport by the government could perhaps be obtained by having a major event.

Heck, even a track built right at / on the circuit could be a hell of a thing - there's quite a hill smack in the middle of Eastern Creek Roadrace track, and plenty of viewing room to be had - though, not really on the main straight / grandstand section. Over the other side of the hill, basically. A track going across the road circuit a couple of times, could be a good circuit. It would be a real MX track, and not a farce like a few of the ones there have been 'plonked' into Road Race venues in Europe and now, with Nevada, in the US.
Unfortunately Barrabool is on the WAS something special, wonder what really every happened their, I thought M.A ended up putting the money up to buy the land, or was it an individual from M.A?

Wonder what ever happened to the money raised by the club to try and save it and if the land is sold if the club will get their share of the money back.

Heck I remember paying money to buy a brick to save the place, though I don't think that wall was ever built.

That place would be perfect as a venue and location and shit the local Geelong council / government would be willing to tip in money that would bring some big dollars and exposure into the area of FORD closing down.

What sort of spectator numbers do you normally get at an Aussie National? Bet it's similar to a British Championship round, maybe around 5K max (used to be more).

I think a British GP typically pulls in around 10-15k these days (again used to be waaay more before YS got involved) but obviously it doesn't really matter where a British GP is held as most people can drive to it. Would Australian MX fans be willing to fly to a home GP? A flight from the East coast to Perth is what, about 4 or 5 hours? Then it's another few hours of travelling to get down to Manjimup! Got to be pretty dedicated to make that trip.

Your probably right about those numbers on a good day. If they ran a GP round in aus, the punters would turn up for sure. I think it's key to put it within reach of everyone though. The moto go at Philip island is great for Victorians but 2000 Kim's from Brisbane. Sydney area is " only" 1000 odd from Brisbane or Melbourne. Flights area quite cheap and there's plenty of options for accommodation etc. Victoria or Queensland would be still ok.
all that's needed is someone to pitch in and build a track. Eastern creek would be perfect but who has the coin?
The gummint wouldn't give a shit about bikes unless they could see the return. Hard sell for Kevin Williams, good luck with that!

There was somewhere between 20,000 -25,000 to each. It was packed. Saturday night, the main street was full of people and I mean no cars cause there's no room full, and the pubs were like sardine cans. The extra camping ground on a local oval was full, every bit of accommodation in town and in the neighboring towns was full, there people sleeping in their cars like us (Hiace), and then there were the people who drove up from Melbourne or wherever the day of the race. It was manic!

No, this was a long time ago, and I'm better at the long time stuff. Oh shit.

And you would mean this Andrea Bartolini. He was the 1999 F.I.M. world champion in the 500cc class on a Yamaha team run by Michele Rinaldi.[1] Bartolini was a member of the winning Italian teams in the 1999 and 2002 Motocross des Nations. He remains the only Italian to have won a 500cc motocross world championship.

Definitely not Coolum, its too small of a sand track compared to what the Euro's are use too.

We don't have any tracks that compare too Euro/American tracks.

Maybe Queensland Moto Park? They would have the funding to build a big track, as you Pay $50 per person to ride there. Tongue Tongue
A World GP @ Homo park. Now that would be something !!!

Would be pretty epic if the Island could get Lakes club behind it and NSW gov to put in a bid... they're reasonably close to each other right? Not too far from Sydney... new track... Could help them get everything finished...

They have said openly that they plan to build a national level track. Two years down the track and still nothing......

And whoever told you that they were even considering holding a World GP there is HIGH !!! It wouldn't have even crossed their minds !!

That place looks the goods. Havn't heard about it before - near Sydney?
Looks a bit supercrossy - don't know if our world GP guys are into that so much but hey, they get paid well.
As underground laid out above, if we could get a round here in Aussie - anywhere on the east coast, it would "go off".
Especially if it was in 2015 with RV in the mix, as well as our guys like Ferris and Waters - a few local wild cards ..... shit, I'm getting the road bike fuelled up and the tent out right now!!

Cripes, you're a bit out on that one. About the only first was it being the first OW 4T with an Aluminium frame in GPs.:

1987 OW500 Woohoo :

I'd love an OZ GP, but, I think an Indonesian one is more on the cards. They've had them before (around about the same era as the OZ ones) and, like Thailand, It's a massive bike market for all of the manufacturers. MX / Moto GP races 'sell' the brand, not just MXers and Sports Bikes. Look to a few of the slogans on both the Yamaha and Honda Moto GP teams leathers for the Indonesian language. And, I think it may be far easier for Luongo to get 'monies' from Indonesian governments - unless, they remember the costs of their MX GPs a few decades ago........

Williams will not put up the money, and I doubt anyone else, government or private, will give him money.

And, unless an MXGP is close to me / most OZ fans, it would be cheaper to go to an Indonesian MXGP, even doing it on a 'grande' scale. A mate of mine went to the Indo Moto GP this year, and said it was cheaper, all up, than his previous Phillip Island trips, that were done with Hotel accommodation. In a nice resort, over far more days as well, with a wife that was very happy to go there. .It's the way it goes, I guess.

He remains the only Italian to have won a 500cc motocross world championship.
I'm a great fan of Bartolini - it started from when he, and / or his brother were holeshot king(s) on Husabergs / Vertimatis (well, even on 2ts before their 4t adventures) in GPs.I think I recall Dirt Bike doing a short comparison test of one of the brothers 'Bergs, against (Steve Lamsons?) privateer CR500. Even then the 4t was a "rev the tits off it" engine, and the CR was a grunty, once a season piston replacement bike. The more things change, the more they stay the same. And that's not coming from any "anti" 4T stance - I worked with 'Bergs for quite a few years, at Sutto's, and am quite a 'fan' of the now defunct brand. I just despise the current capacity rules - which, by the way, didn't exist in the time of said test - it was up to 500ccs, whatever type of engine. Equivalency - The way it should be.

I think Andrea was one of the earliest high profile MXers 'done' for drug usage in MX - steriodal, if I recall correctly . He was suspended / banned for a while, after positive testing. Bubba, is far from the first, but, we are yet to see the final outcome of his testing.

I'm pretty sure Bart is involved in the Italian MXDN efforts, still.

I'd love to see a GP there. Arguably the best soil in the world. The steam plumes that happen in the whoops are super cool

An australian gp would be great if it meant the top riders from the oz nationals got a chance at racing with the regular gp riders. It would be difficult for the smaller teams in the gp series to get there, but it would be cool to see the front runners from their national series race cairoli/rv etc. Its a shame that a country with such a strong national series hasnt got a gp. Be a great addition to the series imo
