Recently I have been battling with myself over glasses and or contacts.... I dont know, I guess some of you guys may know what i mean. You fight the battle within yourself over whether or not you need them or not.... Whether it be pride or whatever the reason may be, you dont really want to say you actually need something...

Well I have been fighting that battle recently and I think I talked myself into finally doing something about it. Does anyone here ride with contacts? pros, cons versus riding with glasses?

Hi there, I ride with contacts, I'm legally blind without glasses or contacts. I can't say I've ever rode with glasses but I could really see the cons of doing so, I've never had a problem with my contacts while riding, goggles do most of the work of keeping stuff out of your eyes. On another note my buddy convinced me that riding with glasses are somewhat dangerous, when he wrecked his glasses cut his nose up pretty bad somehow gave him a black eye and were totally trashed. He made my decision easy lol.

Thanks! Yeah I have heard pro's and con's to both. I have a few friends who ride with contacts and I dont remember them having to many issues but when they did have an issue it was the contact moving on their eye or falling out entirely

I just started using contacts to ride in the last year. It is way better than glasses. I had some real good oakleys that fit good against the face too and they were always a pain to ride with. I don't wear the contacts unless I am riding or working on something where I am going to be leaning over a motor or something. The rest of the time I just wear my glasses. If I am doing one of those 2 things though I don't notice them because I am more focused on what I am doing. I wish I would have done it years ago.

I wore contacts for about fifteen years and had absolutely no problems at all, but then in my late twenties I started getting hayfever and my contact lenses would blur which made riding on those days impossible - which was infuriating at times!

I had lazer surgery about two years ago and my vision has been perfect ever since.

I rode with glasses until I was 14. Contacts are night and day. You'd be surprised how nice it is just to put your helmet on then goggles and go. Contacts don't fog or adjust out of your field of vision like my glasses always did. Just remember to blink and you'll be fine.

I am finally at the point to get glasses. I noticed it almost the day I turned 48. After another year it's only getting worse. I can see fine up close it's far away that's an issue. Does the laser work for farsighted people?

You're nearsighted. I looked into getting mine fixed by laser last year and at 40yrs old I had two docs talk me out of it. They said that after 40 it's not recommended due to the constant changing that ones eyes will be doing over the next 20 yrs or so. They would not guarantee it to last more than a year.

I've worn contacts for almost 30 yrs now and have had no problems whatsoever with riding.

I have always rode with contacts. The only issue I have run into is getting dirt in my goggles, it is inevitable it will end up in your eye. Getting dirt in your eye is a bit more annoying when you have contacts in. I took a digger in a race a few years back, jumped back on and every time I hit a jump I watched sand/dirt float past my eyes and then back to the bottom of my goggles. I made it two laps before it got in my eyes and it was an absolute struggle to keep my eyes open at that point. That is the only issue I have ever had with contacts and riding. I don't like wearing glasses ever, no chance I will wear them while riding.

I almost forgot about the first time I ever wore laminated tear-offs, I reached for a tear-off in a double/double/double section. Instead of pulling across, I rushed and pulled straight out. It pulled my goggles straight out and then catapulted mud and dirt in my eyes right before the goggles slapped me in the face. Can't blame that one on the contacts though.

I've been riding with contacts forever as well. Dirt definitely hurts more and occasionally they bounce around a little but overall are more convenient than glasses.

When you go get yours, a decent doctor will give you some samples to see how you like them. Try as many as you can. the various brands will DEFINITELY feel different and it is really important to get the type that are comfortable for you. Otherwise you are going to be fugging miserable.

I hated my contacts after trying almost every type. I had lasic 6 years ago & have no regrets, I am 40 now & have no issues. My wife however is 2 months out & her near sighted eye is fine but her far sighted eye is doing poorly & she will have to have it fixed again in two weeks

I have Degenerative Vitrious Syndrome from a shooting-eye-injury in 2009. it sucks but doesn't really affect me with riding.

it's an issue mainly when i'm reading or concentrating on something. i've also swatted at flies and bugs that aren't there...

as for riding in contacts, i've been doing it for 15 years or more. they've come out in my goggles many times, but pretty much only when racing. on my big Mexico ride, i carried eye-drops in my vest and put them in at every rest-point. riding in dust is bad enough, but it's even worse when you have contacts.
