Motorcycle Racing Industry,

If you do not like your jobs, I am sure there are more than one replacement for every one of your positions, from mechanics, to riders ,to photogs, to gear reps, even the Energy Drink Girls.

Having been on both sides of the fence here, I understand why Simon was frustrated -- restrictions are hard to follow when others have more and better access, as well as the freedom to move around on your own to get the best shots -- and also the organizer's concerns: safety and the ensuing liability, blocking TV cameras, etc. It's tough to balance, whether it's an outdoor national or inside a stadium. You can't make everyone happy, but you don't want them to go away mad either.

Simon told me he posted this in a moment of frustration and I think he took it down. It was a long and hot couple of days, compounded by those other elements. He's a pro and has been at this for a long time, and I know he's voiced similar concerns to me about both supercross and the nationals -- he just wants to make better photos.

As for the hashtag thing, I think it was cool what #RedBull did with social media and sharing images with the fans on site. if anything it served as a commercial for Simon's shots, which he was posting with the hashtag for the event

Finally, who owns the photos? Technically the photographer, as the rider's pro license grants usage to news media, but that doesn't mean the photographer can make posters and prints or T-shirts of a shot and sell them -- those rights remain with the rider. And the riders want the exposure, as do their personal sponsors, not to mention the event organizers.

Was thinking they should it as a barrel race. 2 or 3 lanes, some ridonkulous berms with some other weird obstacles, over/unders etc.
That's fair enough. As they say, "different strokes for different folks" I guess. I was really into it and thought it was awesome. Maybe a bit long, but hell after watching the giants 18 inning game the other night, it wasn't that bad haha. One thing I loved it about it was the simplicity. I literally have zero friends that know anything about moto, and my wife isn't into moto either, so it was nice to be able to watch it with people and not have to explain everything that was going on. You don't have to know a lick about moto to understand what's going on, which is a big deal IMO

Why would Simon comment that he would be watching "real racing" in two weeks if he was talking about shooting the event. Seems to me he didn't think the racing was any good.

Either way I didn't care for it, thought it was boring, in hindsight I wish I would have watched TP and then shut it off. Just my opinion and I am glad others enjoyed it.

Long time lurker, first time poster. ...I know, I know...STFU!

I thought the event was awesome. I loved it. Entertainment value was very high. Limited racing knowledge needed to watch and follow.High exposure for all racers involved.

I hope it comes back. I think this event is PERFECT for XGames or similar one-off annual event...

If you're a drag racing fan you been hearing shit like this from nascar clowns since the beginning, Straight Rhythm was more entertaining than SX to me, I start getting tired when there aren't any good battling going on in SX, Sometimes it looks like practice out there, Straight Rhythm is good battles all the time JMO

Beat me to it... Laughing I have to admit, sometimes the party I was having to watch the show was more socializing than watching. Apparently we all forgot our ADD meds that day.

Anytime there is something moto I can watch, I will most definitely be watching it! I thought this was a neat event, but I am more excited about the MEC than this one, especially having seen the Red Bull version now. I think I would rather watch real racing than one-on-one, it was a cool concept though.

Bright and early here... I better go take my pills Grinning

Guy B.. ( this all comes with the most respect possible)

I understand it was a challenge to be at that type of event. The idea of the cart was to make it easier for you guys to get around, so you didn't have to walk 3,000 feet from one end to the other.. The pens were to keep photographers who were after a certain shot from standing in the way of a TV camera that they might not realize they were blocking.. The staff photographers were able to roam freely as we had them on radios and should they get in the shot , we could have them move out of the way. That is nearly impossible with the amount of media we had there. With it being our event we also wanted to make sure they got the best shots that could be used for media globally for our event as well as potential photos for next years event promotions. Hope that all makes sense.

Regarding his photos being used without his permission. The only way photos made it up on the jumbo ton was when the person who took the photo tagged #straightrhythm in their post. During intermissions we would pick the best photos from the hash tagged photos and put them on the jumbotron while showing handle of the person who took them. Its new media and that happens at a lot of events.. including supercross on TV with FELD .

I was also there all day Friday and Saturday. It was a great event. I'll be honest, though, I go to made-for-TV events like the X Games (and yes, last weekend), with lowered expectations for creativity. Do I expect to get wide-angle shots at the lip of the jumps like at the demo events? Nope.

As far as the convenience factor...I don't need pampering. If I did, I wouldn't make it through 17 rounds of Supercross, or all 12 Nationals.

Wait, on second thought... Wink
Nice to see you last weekend. Interesting to read through all the comments on the event. Perhaps some things will change for the next event.

There were a couple of photogs standing in the middle of the track that caused some issues as well. I don't thing Simon was among those. Hopefully enough changes happen at the next event that many of the concerns will be addressed.

I think the straw that broke the camel's back for Simon was when they started featuring his photos on the TV broadcast...without compensation.

Seems bass ackwards to me. If your being honest about wanting to make sure everybody got the best shots that could be used for global media and future event promotions wouldn't it be more logical to simply mark off in some way the areas that would interfere with the TV cameras? I mean these guys are professionals do you think that if Red Bull had told them prior to the event what areas to avoid and explained to them why they would not have respected those guidelines? It doesn't make sense that if Red Bull really wanted the best media exposure possible that they would limit the ability of professional media to use their experience and creativity to cover and promote your event by "penning" them up in certain areas. And what about the parents was Red Bull not equally concerned about one of them getting in the way of the TV cameras while cheering on their rider?

The carts seem like a good idea but forcing the media to wait on them to move from one pen to another? Come on even a blind man can see through that BS. Is Red Bull really more worried about the convenience and well being of outside media than they are their own staff photographers? I mean the carts are a great idea but if what you say about wanting the media to get the best shots possible for coverage and promotion wouldn't they have been a "perk" and not a requirement? How many potential shots did they miss standing in the hot sun waiting to be transported from one pen to the next when they probably could have already been there if allowed to move freely?

In a nutshell Red Bull limited the outside media then profited freely on their hard work and experience.

And here we go....

1. The ares we did mark off were the aforementioned " pens" that were on the drag strip, those designated spots were not on TV, hence why the media was encouraged to go there.

2. Not all media was endemic, there were outside media on site as well. We couldn't expect a photographer from say a local news paper to shoot this event and have a full understanding of what in the way of TV or even a dangerous position for him or the rider.

1B. again the Penning... was for safety and to avoid being on camera from a TV shot that you might not see behind you.

3. As for the parents. The only parent I saw was Mr.Hill.. Every rider was given a track pass for his mechanics or team member to be out on the track should a problem arise . If the rider chose to give it to their dad that is up to them. Big James Stewart was not out on the track.

4. Safety, risk are taking into account for everyone who is on track. Riders are riding back to the start , TV crews are driving carts, cable cams are over head and water trucks are rushing to get water down as quick as possible .Carts made the most sense to get people down the 3,000 feet of track. Maybe we should invite you to the next ideation meeting, seems like you have it all figured out.

5. Steve Cox who is not a staff photographer got Cycle news cover shot, so it was possible. Although probably safe to assume he wondered out of a pen a few times.

10/7/2014 8:42am
Sort of off topic, but if someone posted a photo on twitter, does that photo become property of twitter? I don't do social media, but has anyone thoroughly read their terms and conditions? This isn't specific to this incident, just an "in general" question. If so, I could see how this could become a gray area really quickly, because wouldn't you, in a sense, have two rightful owners to a particular photo?

Yes, I think it would be a good idea to bring members of the outside media into your ideation meeting. There is no reason at all not to draw from their experience and expertise. Ultimately the decision on how to handle the media at future events would still be Red Bulls.
Perhaps then the decision could be made with a better view of how to gain even better exposure and publicity that would be mutually beneficial to all involved with less negative feedback. Sounds like in the above posts this is already happening and that's good for everyone involved.
Also for the record I really enjoyed the event and look forward to the next one. It was straight up loser goes home racing in a fresh moto type format and differed from the norm in a positive way I think. One idea I did see that another poster here suggested based off of Prastrana's helmet cam is some split screen side by side racing footage that would be a great experience for the fans and one that would be pretty well exclusive to this event as it's not really feasible in SX, outdoors or the MEC.
Any way just food for thought.
