Hey everyone,
So I've had this bike for about 2 years now. I love it. However I feel like the motor just isn't what it should be. I put a new piston an rings in it at the beginning of the year, and a new crank and everything else was put in before I bought it (got it from a friend so I know he did for sure). I rode my buddies 11' yz250 and I could hardly hold onto it just putting around. Seemed to feel almost like a 500 compared to my bike. So this winter, I'm taking the motor to a friend of mine was a factory mechanic for a few years and we are going to spend some time on it.

My question for those of you that have the same bike, what can I do to get this baby to rip? I've seen some other posts about carb mods and stuff like that. Just trying to see what others have done to this machine to get some power out of it.

Thanks for the help!

First step.....Take the stock carb and huck it! Step 2.....Get a Kehin for it, like one off a 2000 CR250 or JD jetting will sell you a brand new one that is set up pretty close. The bike will run like a different one right there. You can google search 2004 engine mods and come up with some very basic fix for the cr power band. I had my whole engine done, so mine is not the cheap solution, but there are quite a few guys on here that know alot about the simple fix's. Cam P has got it down.

I had an 02 which is basically the same motor as the 04 I believe. I was on a budget so my mods were kinda small. I reached out to Tom Morgan Racing for some jetting help. Here are the specs that Tom Morgan Racing gave me that worked really well.

380 main jet, 32.5 pilot, 6BEY30-76 needle in the 2nd clip from the top.
FMF Fatty Pipe
FMF Power Core II Silencer
V-Force 3 Reeds
Redline oil at 50:1

Good luck as I really enjoyed my 02.

Thanks guys! Keep them coming! My budget is pretty tight as well.

Isn't there some little mods that can be done to seal up the air box? And also the exhaust spacer?

Any links for those items would be greatly appreciated!

I know they mention something about shaving a few thousandth's off the cylinder/head. Like someone said Cam P seems to be THE guy on here for those.

Mxbonz.Com .....they have a air box seal kit. I put one on mine and have had nothing get by the filter since.

the mikuni tmx on the 04 is a better carb than the keihin pwk. it makes more power. people just don't know how to jet, so they use the easier to jet keihin pwk.

call Chad Watts and ask him what carb was on Ricky's CR250, and why they chose the carb they chose.

be careful of people trying to pass their opinion off as a fact. if you want the fact on the carb, don't take it from me call Watts Perfections.

I've ridden the full Watts engine package on a Nationals track, and not only does it yank your arms off, it feels like it revs to 20k rpms. it just keeps singing and singing and making power the whole way. It's also incredibly linear. there is absolutely no hit. it's like a 59HP PW80.

another route you can take is the Pro circuit "McGrath" package. They were doing Jeremy's on the 04-05 Hondas. Last 250 two-stroke to holeshot and lead a lap in AMA SX competition. it's very reasonably priced.

again, just be careful of piecing together shit you read on thumpertalk and whatnot.

With all do respect......"in the real world" powrer delivery with the mikuni.carb is anything but satisfactory. The mikuni. Carb made higher peak numbers when jetted right. But if the elevation or temp change even so slightly it becomes a mess. The kehin is a real world fix for 95% of the people that had that bike. Second of all......I'm sorry, but unless you know someone at procircuit, or your last name is McGrath you are not getting the same mods that such said rider is getting. Your gonna get assembly line work.

Yea I'm not tryin to qualify for a national anytime soon. Hell I'm lucky if I can ride 2 times a month lol I'm just looking for some quick bolt on power. I don't ride or have time to spend on jetting the carb (not to familiar with that anyway) so I'm thinking the jd jetting keihin is the way I'll end up going.

The "long-body" PWK's from the 1999-2000 CR250 (and also the long body one that is sold by aftermarket suppliers such as JD jetting and SUDCO) do not fit correctly on the 2004 CR250. They are too long and sit cockeyed in the intake manifold with high likelihood of causing an air leak. Just ask another poster on here who just went though this and ended up having to machine the carb shorter to get it to fit better.

When CamP checks in here he will tell you to get the shorter PWK that comes stick on the YZ250.

While i agree, that it is a tight fit, mine sits perfectly straight and had none of those issues. just saying.........

How does it rip your arms off if it has no hit?

I did a 2002 YZ250 carb on my 06 CR250R and got the cylinder milled. The YZ carb is cheap on ebay and you don't loose the TPS. Also the 05-07 base gasket should help with bottom end.

There's 10 pages of discussion here for this bike also.

Step 1- unscrew gas cap.

Step 2- Roll 2000 PWK carbureted, cylinder inducted CR 250 under.

Step 3- Re install gas cap!

Pwk air Stryker, any reed cage of your choice and the Pipe is gonna be your choice. I have a Boyesen exaust flange didn't do any thing. Biggest bolt on was the carb. Damn thing even ran better on the stand.

OP, did you check your PV cable operation/adjustment?

These bikes don't have the best stock power characteristics but they aren't slow.

Clutch,

No-brainer, call Terry Varner at Varner Motorsports, he'll port and deck the cylinder, mill the head, give you the jetting specs, and she will rip. He did my 04 and the difference is HUGE!!!!! I could not believe the harder pull out of corners and smoother power delivery, the bike is a dream to race now, and he does not break the bank. By far the easiest decision you have to make.

Check your ring gap
Check your reeds
Make sure the carb is dialed in perfect
Check power valve
Check ignition timing

Once these bases were covered for me, my bike YANKED. Some people say ditch the carb, but I kept mine stock on my 03, dropped in an S7 Nozzle and the bike has been on point.
