Preview of the 60th annual Kauai Hare and Hound. Long video (nicely down, great background music and love hearing the Pidgin English) and I bailed at the five minute mark but the scenes of Kauai are beautiful. I have a lot of respect for the people that compete in events like this. The thought of riding a virgin trail is tempting but as a long time MX racer I am not sure I have the interest to abuse myself for hours on a motorcycle. Might be something to do (or try to do) ONCE but I will have to dwell on that for awhile....like a year or two. Smile

Riding like this appeal to you?

It does... If you have the right setup. I was a 100% Moto guy until I met my wife and her family, who did enduros. I did a few on my CRF450 (that was full Moto) and hated life for 100 miles.

Once I jumped aboard a KTM 200 it was an absolute blast and a welcomed break from spinning the same laps at the local tracks. The woods here in Michigan are ridiculous at times, and the promotors take pride in making it stupid tight.... So I haven't been too involved as of late. I really want to try a GNCC next year once I'm healthy. It seems like the perfect mix between Moto and wider woods.

Yep, I love offroad as much as I love moto. It just took me 15 years to figure it out... All I do is make some quick suspension settings and swap bars with busters and I'm ready to rock...

Really, really want to do an exotic riding trip / moto-vacation with my father before he's ready to hang up the boots (he's only 55 so we've got time)...

I'm a MX guy at heart but I absolutely love jukin and jivin through an aggressive woods ride! I think this particular event is the kind of thing that if you have to question your ability to do it, it's probably a little over your head. I look forward to cutting my teeth on a local woods race for the first time before ever signing up for something gnarly like this one lol

You lucky dog you RE: living in Michigan. Your state has THE model for off road activities and I remember from the days I was an active sound advocate that Michigan was way in front of the curve and had sound testing. As a result off road bikers were allowed to cruise through towns in the UP without being street legal to access different trails.

Do I remember things correctly?

Nice video rock,
not an attempt to hijack your topic, I always show this video to people who wonder if Enduro is something for them,
usually do the trick

Not only that, but in most counties north of Detroit you can ride on the shoulder of the road with an ORV permit. (Off-road vehicle)

That permit fee pays for trail maintanace, etc.... But it's an added perk when you can legally bounce around on roads. We are truly lucky here to have access to the woods we do. A lot of the old growth gets too tight for my liking, but I bet you guys out west would kill for some good old fashioned woods!!

^^^^ this is when I hit a oak so hard it snapped my stock KTM bars and had to finish the last 3 tests in an enduro with a floating throttle and riding with one hand.... it sucked! But I still won, which makes for epic bench racing!!!

Wow, I would absolutely give that a try if I ever got the chance! I'm a trail rider at heart even though I spend a lot of time practicing on tracks, so to experience something like that would be incredible. I don't care what anyone says, there are amazing things to experience on a bike that you will NEVER get by riding around a track, and that video really put that into perspective. They pretty much had me at fresh, unridden trails.Laughing

Thanks for the memories, Rock. The Kauai Labor Day race and the MK200 were my two best memories about riding in HI.

Finishing either event was a major accomplishment. The Kauai Hare and Hound was won more than once back in the '80s by a dude on a trials bike (Dave Amorin maybe? not sure who).

So cool vet323 you raced those events! In the video they show the trail cutter guys and they were on trials bikes.

I had a 76 Kawasaki 250 trials bike for a few years and it was a blast. Like a few other bikes in my past I wish I would have kept it. Sold it for 500 bucks in late 80s.

A Trials bike with Trials skills is the right set up. Kevin Norton @3:35 in green T shirt on L has won it before, but it took the locals a while to accept the Trials bikes. I see the Oshita bros in there too. I think one of the reasons it is so hard is that they are riding MX bikes/tires on technical/rocky terrain. The right set up makes it better.

The Pirelli would be better than a knobby . It (MT43) is more of a Dual Sport tire. I believe it's bias ply and not a Radial Trials tire. It will last longer than a real Trials tire mounted on a MX/Enduro bike.

One of those super sticky Endurocross knobbies might be the ticket.

agree, it's not a real trail tire like the Michelin's it's less gummy but that's not a bad thing (works great with low psi)
Performs surprisingly good in light muddy conditions, the best of two worlds IMO

I'm not familiar with the Hawaiian soil conditions but MT 43 is my first choice for rocky conditions

In some towns yes and others a big no no. If you tried that in Marquette you more than likely will get pulled over by the cops if they see you on a moto bike. I got pulled over riding the shoulder of the road in Harvey which is the next town to Mqt. It's more country than city but the police informed me that if I got caught doing it again my bike was getting impounded. That being said, if you head to Big Bay then your good riding a race bike in board shorts and flip flops. Depends on where your at.
