who wears a mouth piece to race?

Starting to race a lot more now, and see some people wear a mouth piece, and some don't. My doctor recommended I wear one, but I admit, I never played uni/college sports, and have no clue.

They can reportedly help with concussions. I always wore for football (obviously) and I will say that you don't even notice them once you've worn one for any period of time at all.

I tried and couldn't stand it. It kept my mouth open and seemed to dry my mouth out.

I wear one. Not long after I started I took a pretty good digger. I was beat up pretty good and was a little goofy for an hour or 2. I spent the night in the hospital but I didn't have any head issues. I have to think it might have been a little worse. I remember biting down on it as I was flying through the air backwards.

That's one of the things I have been meaning to get at Academy but just haven't gotten it yet. A mouthpiece is one of those pieces of gear that you can't argue will hurt in any way.

Anyone think it would be important to have a chord on it so you don't swallow/choke on it in a violent gnarly crash? I've notice some riders don't.

I ran a chord just because I would occasionally spit it out if I was really sucking wind.


I really recommend the everyone wears a mouthpiece. The cost is nominal and the potential savings in dental expenses is unreal. It also can help to prevent som concussions. Win-win-win.

As soon as I started running one I felt foolish for not starting sooner.

I don't run a cord either , if you get a custom one from a dentist it fits so snug that you don't need one and you really don't even realize that it's there , if you get a football one where u boil it down and fit it ur self , u will need the cord

There's also a theory that you can use a mouth piece that is designed to influence the orientation of the jaw in order to help the airway for breathing advantages. I haven't tried it out, so can't really speak on it's effectiveness, but there is definitely plenty of dentists giving the sales pitch.

I can't wear one when I ride...but only because in a three hour hare and hound race, I need water...and I can't take out a mouth piece to put the water nozzle in my mouth and then put the mouth piece back in.

If I rode shorter races, I'd use one.

personally, I have poor cardio so I can't breathe well enough with one in. I used one that i had for kickboxing and i ended up spitting it out 1/2 through a moto, unintentionally. The tethered option seems cool. I'd be willing to try it again with a better mouthpiece and a tether.
