In someones thread the other day it was mentioned about using a ultrasonic cleaner. I have a cheap little harbor freight p o s but I'm needing to buy a better quality one and big enough to fit engine cases or half a case in. It will get used several times a week. I'm not really looking for the least expensive but one that will be good quality for the money. Any suggestions on brand?

A friend of mine also picked up a Crest and it works very well. Not cheap though.

what cleaning solution are you guys using? What works the best on gummed up carbs and also dirty/carboned up heads? I've heard Piston Kleen works well on carbon but is it good on carbs? How about just regular Simple Green?

I don't have a brand suggestion but you want one that is heated. They work way better when they get hot. Also, we use solution from McMaster Carr pn: 3175K45 . It seems to work pretty well.

I haven't. Oven cleaner works pretty good but not in the ultrasonic obviously. I really don't use the ultrasonic on anything that is filthy. I use it more to break up dried on crap in tiny hard to reach spots. Carbs are perfect for the ultrasonic. I usually get the thing good and hot and then drop the carb in. If it has electronic that I don't want to remove, I just hang the thing with the electronics out of the solution.

OK thanks, I bought the one in the ebay link I posted. It should be big enough for carbs, heads etc. Anything really dirty will get washed in the regular parts washer first.

You're on the right track. That used 5 gal was a real good deal and should handle a lot of your cleaning needs.

You're also right in cleaning your parts in a conventional parts washer first. All that grease and oil will contaminate
your expensive cleaning solutions and reduce it's cleaning capabilities in short order.

To get the best results, you need to use specific cleaners for the metal you want to clean. I use and recommend
Bransons cleaners. They make a couple of cleaners designed for ferrous or non ferrous metals. These cleaners
come with a spec sheet that specifies the concentration, temperature and time for the best results. Here's a link
to a site that sells it for a good price:
http://www.all-spec.com/products/Cleaners_and_Aerosols|Ultrasonic_Cleaning|CLN-0F/635-082.html

Here's a before and after ultrasonic cleaner, of a cylinder I did for a customer bike using the Bransons MC3 in an
11 gal Crest cleaner:

I've tried all the Simple Greens, Purples and every other "color" general purpose cleaners on the market, none of them work
for ultrasonic cleaners because that's not what they were designed for. Some will actually make matters worse by causing
stains or burns. If you use any good quality ultrasonic specific cleaners at the right temperature and time, nothing can beat
it for cleaning Aluminum or ferrous metals without damage.

Plain distilled water works amazing in the ultrasonic cleaner. Better than simple green or anything else I've tried. Makes aluminum especially bright. Has to be distilled...... Not tap water.
