I would like to inform you all that I am retiring from my position with Racer X and Racer Productions, effective October 15th.
Thank to the Coombs family for the opportunities for professional and personal development that you have provided me over the years. I have enjoyed working in the industry and appreciate the support and creative freedom provided me during my tenure with the company. I’ve always been allowed to speak my mind and lend them my unique sense of humor (not from concentrate). My departure stems from no ill will towards to any of RX or its employees, rather the demanding travel schedule keeps me away from my beautiful wife. My involvement with motocross is not over, but needs to be pruned back a bit for personal reasons and I hope you can all respect that.
While I look forward to enjoying the next stage of my career, I will miss working for the company and meeting with the fans and riders every week. You guys have always been supportive of me and my articles and pics and its difficult to express how thankful I am for that. I share a lifelong love of this sport and will continue on even past this decision.
Sincerely,
Steve Cox

I can tell you the travel could be an issue with anyone.
He was talking about responding to it here.
I don't know who posted this, but it seems like it's probably someone who knows me fairly well by talking about my wife and things like that. It's really rather creepy. However, there are a couple typos in there that I wouldn't allow to go up on a site announcing my "retirement". And besides, I'm far too broke to "retire" from anything. It would be quitting, not retiring.
Anyway, not to be a jerk, but for those who have asked me at the races and via email and on the phone about why I'm not on the boards anymore, you need look no further than this. Most of the people here are really cool, but it's the kooks like this that ruin it for everyone. And if I was going to "retire", I wouldn't do it on a message board - unless, of course, I was retiring FROM a message board.
It's just too bad that whoever did this doesn't have the balls to stand up and say they did it. This is not funny, and it's not cool. Luckily, the guys at Racer X are cool enough and know me well enough that they didn't buy it. But what's most bothersome about this post is that it seems to be a genuine attempt to hurt me and my career because there's nothing in it anywhere that could lead anyone to believe it's a joke.
We'll likely never know who wrote this, but rest assured that if you ever see anything even resembling this in the future attributed to me, it's probably not me.
We miss you nerd.
