Does this mean the stupid red backgrounds will be done away with? Doesn't make sense to need both of these to identify the defending champion, does it?

I like the red...looks sharp and serves a purpose. Although I agree they shouldn't have to do both, drop the forced #1, if it isn't important to the riders then why should it be to us.

Current Champion wears the number 1,

current series leader has a red background. I think they do it in GP's.

Makes sense, Joe Average can work out who the main players are

That would be a much better idea if indeed the red plate must stay in some form.

It's about time! This whole idea of trying to emulate Nascar with permanent numbers didn't/doesn't work.
The casual or uneducated fan needs to be able to see who the number 1 rider is and not have to ask the guy sitting next to him.
I believe the point standings are there for a reason. It's a rating system and you earn that number.
