I don't like the MM graphics and look, and don't really care for all the Monster graphics. If you like that stuff - fine by me. Have at it. Plaster your bike with whatever you want and wear whatever brand currently turning your crank. I really don't even care if you're a flat-billing bro, bro. Manufacturers like KBC keep prices low with simple designs and less expensive (i.e. heavier) components. The additional costs of an Arai or Shoei revolve around more expensive materials and advanced R&D, both of which typically aim to reduce weight. The HJC might not have "cool" factor (both literally and figuratively) of the Big 4, but that doesn't not necessarily imply that it offers an inferior alternative to the high-dollar lids.
Less expensive components and materials = Less quality helmet. Thats like saying a Kia optima is as good as a BMW M3, but they use less expensive components. Makes no sense whatsoever, the Kia IS an inferior alternative to a BMW M3.
I have visited the Bell factory, and am a firm believer in what they do. I have also learned of Suomys batch testing procedure, in which case if a helmet fails their safety inspection, that ENTIRE lot of helmets is scrapped.
I absolutely disagree with your last sentence, and I feel sorry for you if these are the helmets you choose when participating in such a dangerous sport.
The technology generated by the Big 4 trickles down to other manufacturers within a couple of years. Like bicycling helmets, the cost increases as weight decreases. A $200 road cycling helmet is actually less safe than a $50 skate helmet, due to the surface area each covers. However, cyclists have notorious obsessions with weight, and will gladly pay hundreds of dollars to save a few ounces.
Comparing Arai and KBC defies logic on the surface. I have an Arai road helmet and wouldn't trade it for anything. But that doesn't mean it's inherently safer than the KBC. It may pass the eyeball test, but statistically, it cannot be proven.
