Seattle School Shooting

Edited Date/Time 6/8/2014 1:04pm
Another terrible rampage incident. Fortunately in this case one of the students took the necessary action to limit the amount killed and injured. This one hits close to home as it is my wife's alma mater. Very proud of the students' reactions in such a scary situation.

A Seattle Pacific University (SPU) student tackled a gunman who was reloading his shotgun after killing one student and wounding two others inside a campus hall Thursday afternoon.

The shooting unleashed a wave of terror across the school as it went into lockdown and students scrambled for cover.

Not very often, but it usually it happens when someone that doesn't have a gun intervenes

This definitely freaked my oldest out quite a bit. She attended SPU her freshman year before transferring for the last couple. She still has many very good friends who are just finishing their junior year right now, and had at least one class each quarter at Otto Miller Hall. She was pretty desperate trying to get ahold of her friends as soon as she heard about it.

SPU is a tiny school. There are only about 3000 or so undergrads or so, about 1000 more students than my kids' high school. From my daughter's experience, it's a pretty close knit campus so a huge percentage of the students are going to be acquainted with the victims of this senseless act.

You should test it out. Go attack an armed person. Let us know how it turns out.

It was just tested, worked out great apparently.

Basically, if you loose your gut and learn a little jiu jitsu you'll feel just as safe as having your gun.Smile

They think so. oldAFI thinks that an armed person against an un-armed person is the same as two people fighting that are un-armed. This is the example he gave. The "Left" has such a low confront of evil that they can not even perceive it. They give examples that garner a vain attempt at logic.

Why do you think in terms of such small boxes?

I don't represent the millions of left wingers, nor fit your sense of how I perceive evil.

We're talking about guns, but you keep bringing in politics, voting, and now a makeshift definition of evil.

I'd suggest you stick to one topic, and keep an open mind Smile

Guys it is obvious, the reason why people in the USA get killed by guns all the time, is because there are too few guns, if more people had more and bigger guns, the gun problem would go away. Just listen to NRA and the gun lobby, they know their shit and are only in it for your safety. USA is also unique that way, because it is the only place in the universe where more guns will solve a gun problem, anywhere else if you have a problem, you remove the problem, but in this part of the world you remove the problem by increasing the problem, it is fantastic how that works in the US and in the US only. So please help USA and the gun lobby to get rid of USA´s gun problem, buy more and bigger guns, the bonus part is, that if you carry it and get in to a situation, you might have the chance of becoming a hero, by shooting someone, there is a Dirty Harry in all of you, just look at any Cowboy or Action movie if you feel hesitant, and you will see how cool and heroic you can be with a gun!

Unfortunately the temptation will always be to turn these tragedies into a 2nd amendment debate fodder. I think the most important thing to take away from this story is that when faced with a dangerous and horrific situation students at Seattle Pacific University acted with courage and selflessness in confronting the shooter and aiding the victims. Had Jon Meis not done what he did this tragedy would have been much worse. Please don't let your gun agenda distract you from a seeing the good in this, that a young man when faced with a unimaginable situation made the decision to risk his life to save others. Others were quick to follow as well as those who ran towards the victims to help them rather than away from them. Values matter.

The guy had a shotgun so he had to reload, that's when they jumped him. If he'd had an assault rifle with multiple magazines it would have been a different story.

So lets hear your solutions..... So how would you two prevent things like this from happening???? Don't be scared....many of us would like to hear this!

All one has to do if one wants to see how it would all turn out if JFS or oldAFI or newb were president is to look at the worlds leaders and tyrants view of the US since Barry took charge. There is a good rule for life that says it is good to bend over backwards but don't bend over forwards. They seem to start in that position.

You have obviously never lived in a dangerous town judging by your post. Guess what, criminals will get guns no matter what, whether they are illegal or not, just like drugs. Do law abiding citizens buy illegal drugs, no. Do criminals buy and have access to drugs, yes. See where I'm going with this?

All of these school shootings freak me out a bit because you really are a sitting duck inside a college campus. Think about it, if you had a gun and wanted to go to a place where nobody could defend themselves, where would you go? That's right, a school where nobody is carrying any form of protection. You gun control clowns want to know what the real problem is, THE PEOPLE! Guns don't shoot themselves, it takes an insane moron to make this type of stuff happen. I'm worried that the more we hear about this stuff, the more it will happen, since every nut job in the country will now want to "go out with a bang". Why do we have to start this same stupid debate every time something like this happens? Maybe we should wait a bit and feel for the people who had to live through this, rather than spew the same useless crap over and over again.

My point is in response to those that want to say an M-4 is "just another gun". Assault rifles are designed to kill as many people in as short as time as possible. This is a good example of the difference. I own 5 guns and have a ccw but don't believe everyone needs to be armed like a SWAT team. One dead and 3 wounded versus over twenty dead.

An "Assault" rifle is a military term describing a full auto rifle. An M4 is semi auto. In CA an M4 is hampered by laws regarding magazine reloading and greatly reduces speed of such. Interestingly an M1 Garand reloads faster with a larger bullet but doesn't "look" as threatening, thus it is not considered an "assault" rifle. These guns have been around a Long time but if one looks at the increase in shootings and compares that to the increase of Psych drugs you have your answer. JPT I am not disregarding your post, just clarifying the situation. These drugs can turn a person into a murderer as stated by the drug manufacturer.
