You mean utopia? No.

To a lot of riders, losing necessarily means they didn't have the right set up. Like Chad Reed last summer.

Professionals rarely take the blame for their failures. Golfers blame their caddies. Racers blame their equipment. It's hard on their confidence to admit they're lacking in some way. A better question is,,,, " Will James' fans ever be convinced that he could be beaten 'STRAIGHT UP'?"

I totally understand being one with your equipment ,but as a top elite athlete with top elite professional team employees surrounding them...
how far off can settings be to perfection?
new equipment should be left for quality team test riders, then fed down...or up..to the elite team rider.

As someone once put motocross is the ultimate middle of man and machine. In cycling it's more man. In auto racing it tends to be more machine. Motocross is the ultimate balance of man and machine.

It's a competitive environment, everyone is always looking for the smallest edge. Even if you have a pretty good setup you will always be looking to improve, but you don't know what's better and some of those trials will turn out to be mistakes.

Sometimes it's just a gamble, especially if the conditions are changing a lot. Hell even F1 teams make setup mistakes that cost them races, and the amount of data and technology they have compare to MX is on another planet.

I'm not sure what you mean by that photo (sorry don't know enough about Hannah or guys in that era).

I did mean to add to my post that some riders (like RC, RV) will just ride well with whatever they have, while others (CR, JS more lately, maybe not earlier in his career) seem more sensitive to bike settings.

Hannah bitched all the time about how bad his Yamaha's were and wanted to ride a Honda real bad, had to wait till 83 for a spot to open up,

Not sure what your point is, I thought the thread was about setup choices, not poor handling bikes. Granted today's bikes are better in comparison, but you could make that comparison between bikes of Hannah's era and whatever they rode back in the late '60's and early '70's when MX was in its infancy.

I guess im putting setup, handling, suspension, overall package...all in one category.

hannahs 125 in the picture was not to par with that years standards.of any 125 that year.

actually ,good point about dust in the eyes/goggles. how these pros race with vision issues but really not skipping much of a beat in the process.

i think j mart has his bike dialed. not being smart,it really does look like it is perfect. i know rider input is tops, but it really looks smooth and of course fast.
