Coffee at McDonalds or Hardees is $1, Starbucks is about $2-3 but it is not really coffee, it is 4 shots of espresso put in a cup so hence the higher price,

Who said $7200 for a new 2 stroke. I just bought a new YZ250 and after the $500 blu cru rebate I paid $5800 OTD. But I also bought a new 250F for $6000 OTD after blu cru rebate

Also back to the original topic. MSRP on the Suzuki 85 is $4200 which by the way you cannot get cause they don't import/make them anymore, but if you pay MSRP you are not a very good buyer.

Yamahas are $3995 MSRP and we were buying them for $3200 out the door so basically $1000 off of MSRP.

Right now there is a hold over 2012 YZ85 at my local dealer with a $2500 price tag so basically about $2800/2900 OTD

All I know is I can't believe what a new 450 costs. That's why I'm on a 250 2 stroke. Who can really afford a new $9000+ bike every year?

I envy you guys. I could have brought a new bike, rather than buying second hand for the same money.
I know the exchange rate makes a difference, but in real terms, a coffee here costs ~$4.50, Im assuming it costs roughly the same stateside?
Could someone buy the bikes here in the U.S. and ship them over? I will guess there would be import tax, but still, that is a big gap.

I've heard multiple local racers here saying they had bought crated year old model Yamaha 85's for well under 2K. One guy bought 4 one guy bought one.

The other day I went to the dealer to buy some premix and while there I looked at all the new bikes. Wheels started turning in my head as to how much faster/better/cooler I'd be with a new bike. Then I looked at the price tag and was thankful I still had my '03 to ride. Totally ridiculous the cost of bikes these days. Inflation is a big part of it, but even accounting for that prices have still jumped a bit. Add in the maintenance cost or four strokes and this sport is really out of reach for more and more of us blue collar shmucks.

This sport has not outgrown itself. MX in general is on the verge of death. Look at any other market that has failed economically....prices skyrocketed out of control as a last chance to grab profits then the bubble bursts. MX is on the verge of this.
I never thought in a million years that motocross would just go away, but recently I have been thinking otherwise... there have been a number of factors working on killing moto, price is certainly one of them... i make decent bank, well over the "national average", yet there isn't a chance in hell of me coming up with 8k cash to buy a new bike.... 5k i can swing, but over that and all the kids braces, mother in laws presents, road tolls, etc etc etc finally catch up with me.... so seeing as how 5k can't get a new bike, it goes someplace else and i stay riding the same thing, or buy something else used off of CL....and that is me, not a person making the national average... if a person making the national average can never realistically afford a new bike, the manufactures can't expect to sell very many of them...

and... the "industry" seems to want to blame poor sales on the economy, or a half dozen other reasons, when the real problem is their product/pricing....

Around here, any place that was considered a place to ride 10-20 years ago, is now either housing development, or if trails are your thing, the trails are now "equestrian trails". We still have a few tracks, but about half of what we had in the 80s and 90s (greater Seattle area).

Those of you with doom and gloom on the mind.. Electric bikes may be the saving grace for anybody living near a city.

Agree 100% - I make ok money, wife works and we don't have kids. I still can't justify spending more than $5-6k on a bike.

i had a friend do that in the past, if you ship a few at a time you can save abit of money..
Oh and Hamish, good coffee here in sydney is around $5 i hear ya!
