Got a 04 YZ250 yesterday, Clean as a whistle, pics don't even show how clean it really is. About 12 hours on the motor. What do I need to know about this year, or this bike in specific. Normal things that go wrong, any special maintance that needs to be know. Any opinions/thoughts would be great.

Thanks

Awesome bike! You can just put premix in that bad boy and ride the hell out of it!
Looks like it already has a Factory Fatty on it. I have a 9oz flywheel weight on my 02', but I use my more as a playbike (trails, light moto) than a full-on moto weapon. Makes a very tractable powerband even more linear. My friend has an 04' like that, and he basically runs it box-stock, with the exception of a PC pipe and silencer.

Probably could use a suspension service at least.

Yep.

PC pipe, V-Force reed cage, service it top to bottom and lube it up, bearings will be dry, get suspension serviced, oil will be old, premix, ride.

And smile. That might be one of a lot of people's favourite bike!

Yeah thats a PC pipe already, Has the v force reeds, fork seals were just redone, tag bars, renthal sprockets, chain, but other than that, its all stock. So i just wanna see what i "should" do before going out on it. If i ever get out.. Chicago weather is giving me cabin fever.

Like mentioned above, get a 9 oz fly wheel weight to smooth out the power a little bit. If you have some money to burn the SSS suspension from the 06+ YZ's is where to burn it. You can swap out the triple clamps and I believe the front wheel to do the switch. I don't mind the suspension on my 01 but I ride twice a year and go slow and steady.

Get the suspension done for your weight and riding ability. Go through the linkage, swingarm, steering stem and wheel bearings, make sure everything is good and greased up, check all the bolts and go rip.

Like vanillaice mentioned, if you can afford it at some point I would do the suspension swap. The best money you will spend on that bike. Ebay will reward you with some patience.

I'm going to be getting an 02 and up some time in the future…. Would I really have to swap out the wheel for the SSS Conversion? What is different?

If you ride some woods, go down 1 size on the pilot jet. That bike is awesome right out of the box. Don't get stressed about SSS forks until you have ridden the stock setup. I actually liked them better in some areas. I felt they kept me up on top of whoops better than the SSS forks and resisted bottoming better.

I found the stock forks to be better for off road, had race tech revalve them.

Mate, suspension and you're golden in terms of riding.

Or you could look up DDMX18's bike on here for more ideas!

That thing is clean. Grease the steering stem bearings, and replace if needed. All my used yamaha 250's i've bought always need new no matter how clean they look.

suspension service and revalve for your weight

vforce3/4

Awesome bikes, v-force, pipe, and suspension all go a long way on these things. The 9oz flywheel is a nice touch too. I have SSS suspension and oem clamps off an '09 up for sale.

Just go out and ride it and then you can see what you may want to change on it . Go to a track if possible and ride through 5 gallons of gas each day for several weeks. And like someone said get some good premix that won't leave a lot of carbon buildup on the piston. And You could always check MXA for a bike test.

As somebody mentioned up above, check the steering stem bearings for grease, they didn't come with any from the factory really.

I haven't done it myself but that is just what I had seen discussed when I googled it. But now that I double checked, it looks like it is just the axle that needs to be swapped, and people had mentioned the wheel spacers too. ThumperTalkHere's thread on it.

i was just about to ask the same, how much? Smile

i've got one very similar i've gone with pc pipe which gives more top end and smooths the initial hit a touch, gytr flywheel weight
i find the stock suspension a bit harsh but i'm only 5'8 74kg

if you're a really aggressive rider I wouldn't put the flywheel weight on. Although if your local riding area is hardpacked they're nice and prevent the ass end from breaking loose. But if you're riding in rough, wet brownie trays you don't need a flywheel weight.

I have pics up in the bazaar, but pm me and we can negotiate on price. Plus I don't know if I listed that I have the stock triple clamps and parts from Enzo's revalve to go along with it.
