I remember getting a dollar from my dad and going to the local store. I could fill up my bike, get a pint of milk and a cherry pie and ride all day long. Open face helmet with snap on face guard and my yellow and black Yamaha jersey and blue jeans. Good times

I remember Mike Craig on a YZ80 at Barona Oaks...

...Drilling holes in my open-face helmet to install an "Iron Jaw."

...Riding an air-cooled, drum-braked bike when it was state of the art (1982 RM80)

...Truly understanding for the first time what it meant when the flag was flown at half-mast. It was flown that way over my local track the weekend after the space shuttle blew up.

...You could buy a Cagiva in the US

I remember when everyone loved James Stewart because he was fast. Then hated him because he was too fast. Then loved him when he would wreck. Then hated him because he had a reality show. Then loved him when he was winning again. Can't we all just agree that we love the guy from here on out?

I remember when the opinions of motocross fans weren't grossly over-represented by a small group of people posting on one Internet forum.

I remember my 1st dirt bike. A 1978 kd 100. I ll never forget it!. My family didnt have much money and my dad told me to take care of it. It was so cool cause, basically its how i learned everything about working on bikes , after school we would work on that thing everyday! Thats why 2strokes are important to me, cause me and my dad could do it togeather. The 4strokes ruin that, cause im scared to death to work on them!

I remember my dad driving me all the way from Conyers to ProAction Suzuki on Memorial Drive in Decatur, GA to look at the brand new RM80B. I was giddy with excitement when my dad asked the manager "How much out the door?". Guy says "$420", and my dad responds with "Wrap it up". Like it was yesterday...

Sidebar: I was a Yamaha man (boy) until that day. However, a week earlier my pop visited the local Yamaha (much closer to home than ProAction) to pick up a YZ80D. The owner was a crusty bastard, as was my old man, so a deal failed to be reached. My dad held that story until I was about 30 years old. Little did he know it would lead to a personal vendetta against Broc Glover for stealing the 125 title from Danny LaPorte in '77. Yes, I'm still bitter..

I remember being at lake sugartree one year in the pro pit, honda came in and flagged off a place for their boxvans.

Next,a bunch of wasted guys pullin, wad up the baners and park, unloading beaters that made beaters look good.

One is chugging whiskey out the bottle and yelling.

The honda vans show up and confront whiskey pete,he aint scared.

Gary comes over and says "honda guy had this reserved and says you took down the banners, does he look like a liar?"

Whiskey pete says " yep,if I ever saw one" ,honda parks elsewhere and whiskey pete gets on a beater,

Goes around the pond and launches bike and self into the pond. They were entertaining all weekend.
That's a pretty good story hillbilly, too bad JLaw doesn't race anymore so there's no funny/crazy stories like rolling the rental and other stuff these days...

Na,no camera then,I was just broke all the time trying to racee ever weekend.

One other day at sugartree Damon had just moved to A and Yamaha sent Mike Jones down to race him.

It was a slam fest ,an unbelievable slam fest.after a few motos Mike came to Damon's boxvan to get it on.

He was jumped by Damon's dad and uncle with tire irons.Mike told me he was done, didn't need a broke leg.

He packed and left.

Watched Stanton pull off while leading the nat on a 490 so he could go to Loretta.

Good times had at that track.

I remember the smell of an all 2stroke race track. Sometimes the 85 class gives me smell triggered flashbacks.

I remember stacked classes at every race.

I remember 15 dollar classes, 10 for the 2nd class.

I remember everyone hanging out without their smart phone.

When commercials and tv shows didn't reference texting terms and hashtag.

I remember when I walked to the gate for the 51cc 4-8 stock class in '94 (not split back then) and talking to james stewart on the starting line, right before he dominated on a PW50.

I remember when Ricky showed up at Lowes, KY in '94 or '95 in the back of a pickup for an area qualifer riding a kx80, and layed down completely flat whips over the finish line. He threw a nac-nac over a massive stepup in moto 2 while i was on the gate. Even back then, watching him ride made me want to ride.

I also remember, that same day, my dad going nose to nose with someone at the races with Ben Riddle that day because Riddle tried to run over our dog with a pitbike. The dog was fine, Riddles Z50 and watergun didnt make it.

I remember going to Cobra and getting one of the first 100 bikes made by Bud himself, and him showing up at COCR and Red Bud for my LLQ's that year. Later, I lined up next to Millsaps on the gate with bud talking to both our dads behind the gate. I believe RupertX was down there that year, after Joey demolished everyone in the 2nd moto at the RedBud regional.

I still have the VHS tape from that moto with Davi at LL, complete with my late grandpa saying "that damn kid wrecked him" after Millsaps caught my front wheel halfway through the moto as we were 3rd and 4th.

Good memories

I remember when quads weren't allowed on our moto tracks to ruin them. RIP ruts.

I remember buying a set of KYB air shocks for my 1978 KX125 from DG after I blew one of my stock shocks at Pepperell at a NESC race. My dad was able to get me a deal on them......I dont remember what I paid though.....I bought a pair of Scott boots from them when they came out too. I cut about an inch off the top with a hacksaw because I saw in MXA that all the fast guys did that. I hated those boots and sold them to a friend of mine.
I think gas was less than $1.00 per gallon back then - I was working part-time at a machine shop for 4 bucks an hour drilling and tapping holes in castings. It was a very dirty job, but I learned a lot about life and people. My parents and aunt & uncle were very helpful financially in my early days of MX racing.

Add in Tommy Clowers, and before them, it was Bader Manneh.

I remember being able to fill the tank on my '82 RM 80, ride out of my garage and be at Marty Smith's freeway track in Sorrento Valley in 20 minutes.

I remember when I was in middle school reading DirtRider & it talking about how 2strokes would be outlawed & wed all have to ride 4strokes because of pollution/emissions. Currently having a 89 rm125 at the time, the only 4stroke I had ridden was my xr100 as a kid. I couldn't imagine racing or riding 4strokes forever because I loved 2strokes. I couldn't wrap my brain around how 4strokes could ever be made to compete w/ 2strokes. Dizzy

Now after having many 250 & 450f's, I can't imagine ever riding a 2stroke again.Whistling Blush

I remember one day in the summer of '76 my Dad took me to pick my up hand me down 74 Honda XR75 from the Heyser cycle shop in Laurel, MD. It was my older brother's bike and he had outgrown it, ragged it out, and moved on to his new passion -- Lacrosse. Well, we knew it needed lots of repairs, but when they my Dad the repair bill was $478.00 (yep, I remember), he flat out flipped his lid and went off on the shop manager. i was so embarrassed that I kind of hid out somewhere on the showroom floor. He wasn't happy, but he paid it. And you better believe I took damn good care of that bike.

I remember when I stretched out a chain, I simply took a hammer & chisel and took a few links out it to make shorter.

I remember when the Klotz 2 stroke oil I used came in a red and white oil can and had to opened with a bottle/can opener.

I remember when I actually use to patch inner tubes.

I remember the first time I laid eyes on a new 79 Maico Magnum 450 GS E at Karson's Suzuki in Baltimore, MD.

I remember how my friends used to make fun of me from 77 to 79 for riding an old ratty 69 Maico 360 (never broke down!)

I remember the first time my buddy invited me to race my 78 Honda CR 250 at Big Berm -- I chickened out.

I remember riding with Lumpy (he had 79 or 80 HUS CR 250) & Ben Schaefer at the Texaco industrial park in Hanover, MD.

I remember the day I sold that Honda in 1980 ( for LAX & chicks) I didn't own or ride another motorcycle until 2003.

I remember Lake Whitney Trans AM 1975. Sunday morning walking around the outside of the pits awe struck at who and what was in my vision. Then as practice started seeing Jim Pomeroy on a blubbering 370 Pursang wheeling the length of the start straight, dropping the front wheel into the first turn and repeating down the first straight, dropping into turn two and wheeling out of site around the next bend in the track and the Bultaco never really seemed to clean out. First pro race!
I remember RC on a PC 125 at MY Morris 1999, his corner speed and his throttle that seemed to be stuck WFO. The race that day was for 2nd.

I remember when Ponca was the big amateur national. Also, I was almost as excited to see next years' models on display every year at Ponca as I was for the racing. They were always so cool and had huge changes!

This. In New Mexico. Sandy whoops and cliff jumps for days. Straight out of the garage and then back to the house.

I remember taking the lights off my SL70 and handpainting numbers on a piece of white formica for a numberplate. The next day I entered my first race. Did OK in the first and second motos and then the skies opened up. Evidently I'm a mudder because I won the third moto and the overall. July 11th, 1971. Changed my life forever.

I remember Lyle Dutoit of Mission Honda flying in the first XR75 in the country to Jacksonville so Jeff Ward and Brad Dutoit could destroy us at the very first, very muddy Mini O's. And it was called the Winternationals back then.

I remember later in the day having a girl! (Renee Payen) win my class at the flat track.

I remember a month later finding an XR75 under the Christmas tree. Best. Christmas. EVER!

I remember running around Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, AL with a very young David Bailey and then spending the night in the motorhome with Gary and Darleen.

I remember going to pick up my 1974 CR125 as soon as it hit the dealer's dock in late 1974.

I remember "moving the shocks forward" on that bike a few months later.

I remember racing that bike at Blue Ribbon Raceway in Montgomery, AL on a really cold February day in 1975 for my first pro licensed race in the upstart NML. Some short, blonde headed guy who was visiting his Grandma in Selma won. They said his name was Barnett.....turned out to be a pretty good rider.

I remember.........God, I love this sport. Cool
