My wife and I attended the Daytona SX yesterday for the first time in quite a few years, and I consider myself to be a pretty avid fan of the sport and kind of caught on to this guys enthusiasm last year when I would watch qualifying practice. Every week I rooted for him, and other privateers as well to make the show and finally it happened for him in Vegas.

The new format this year really gives privateers and honest chance to make mains and he's been doing a pretty damn good job of it lately, and he never fails to "fist pump" whenever he does qualify, even if it's a 4th in the LCQ he celebrates like he won the main event. As I cruised the pits yesterday I made it a point to try to find him and the privateer journey team and just let them know I'm a fan of the program and what they bring to the sport, Nick took time away from his dinner(it was after 5) and spoke to my wife and I about his year so far and how he was just pumped to be able to ride all the rounds thanks to the privateer journey team.

Anyway, this kid and his whole team are what I would like to see out of all the guys. I understand guys like Villipoto and Stewart are used to winning all the time, but it would be great to see the same level of excitement from them when they do. If you get a chance at an upcoming round to meet up with guys like Nick you should do so, take a stroll past the crowds and take a minute to thank the guys that are out there giving it their all to make the 22 rider field that we all enjoy watching every week.

Good read. I agree with you and we pull for him every week. It was also cool to see Ronny Stewart make the main again also.

I like Nick Schmidt as well. And I thought it was pretty cool to see Ronny Stewart fist pumping after he qualified tonight too!!! It was pretty funny because Emig mentioned Stewart pumping his fist but he was off the screen, then right after Emig mentions it, Stewart reappears and he's still pumping his fist! lol

Agreed. It would be hard to fill the 22 man main event gate If it weren't for the hardworking privateer programs. These young men and their sponsors deserve a lot more credit than the main stream media gives them. Sad These guys are the work horses of the industry.

So funny you say that because I have no clue who Nick Schmidt is, he could walk by me at the mall and I'd "BRO" mean-mug him not knowing who he was, yet I root for him every weekend haha. Not sure why, just has cool style and seems to ride hard, like you said. Always glad to see him put in good results in semis or whatever. Remember his whoops wheelie a la Kyle Partridge earlier this year in practice at Oakland, I think?

There is something that fascinates me about privateers. Was yelling at the screen for Les Smith last night hoping he would make it

He had a pretty sketchy "wheelie" over that rutted out triple before the whoops in the LCQ, almost a Stewart like wheel tap, the fact that he rode it out and qualified allowed me to label it a wheel tap rather than a mistake. I root for all the underdogs, the thing about Schmidt is that he just never fails to be full of excitement when he qualifies, it would be great if more of these up and coming kids would model themselves around this kind of thinking, rather than the "bro", too cool for school mentality.

I'm really start to show my age with the "too cool for school" symbolism..............

Awesome read for sure. I loved it when Stewart went flying over the finish line fist fully in the air. Guys like these are what the sport still is. Not everyone of us can be the next RV or James but we love motocross and enjoy it any time of the year! I was glad when Fro & RC started to talk about Nick, he definitely deserves the attention! Great riding this year and hopefully more to come out of all the privateers!

Here's a little face time with him from last year. I agree with the OP, it's great to see that kind of enthusiasm.

I think with Nick you can tell he's giving it 100% and he isn't fading. Plus, he's fast and has skills. Some of the other dudes back there burn bright then fade, but this guy has been doing his homework.

I was really pulling for the 7-deuce-deuce too, but he slid backwards during the LCQ. He's close though...really close to being on the level too.

Hearing both these guys on Pulp also makes you want them to make it.
