Tyla Rattray winning the MX2 World Championship for South Africa yesterday got me thinking about which country has the most successful riders.

South Africa can boast having:

2 x World 125/MX2 championships
2 x World 250/MX1 championships

1 x USA Lites East Coast SX Championship
1 x USA Lites West Coast SX Championship
1 x USA National Lites/125 championship
2 x USA National 250/Open Championships

Any other country ever been this dominant in Europe and the US?

On a per-capita basis, I would think that Belgium would be the KO winner by a long shot.

On a per-capita basis New Zealand is up there, but no one can touch Belgium...

Easy question.
Belgium wins, there's only about 15 million of 'm and there's so much MX talent around.

This is the first season without a Belgian World Champ since 2002 in MX1 or MX2
(MX3 title went to Belgian Sven Breugelmans this year.)and they have won the MXdN 14 times.

To throw a spanner in the works here, if you look at "rider per capita" SA takes it hands down. There are probably more riders in Cali then in the whole of SA.

My original question had this at the end ....

"Any other country ever been this dominant in Europe AND the US?"

Belgium ever won a US title??
New Zealand ever won a US title??

France as "txrider44" pointed out seem to be the most dominant on both sides of the pond.

Another question then, what foreign riders have won a US title and a World Championship?

O.K., got it.
I don't think any country has been dominant in Europe and the US.
South Africa and New Zealand (BT0101: 2007 125E) and France have champions in both but have not been dominant like Belgium in GP's.

I can only think of a rider being dominant in both Europe and the USA:

JMB.

Other riders with titles on both sides: Albee, Townley, Lackey, LaPorte, Langston, Pichon. There's not too many people who can say they have a world championship and AMA championship.

I think the reason Belgium has so many good riders is because they have a great club level system. They basically run their races from about March through September, one series, on pretty much different tracks every week. They will stake out tracks in pastures, visit permanent sites, but rarely use the same tracks twice. They don't have 40 different classes like they do here so the gates are always full and every week you know what time your practice starts and what time your motos are. Very professionally run and also a lot of local sponsors get involved and a lot of shops also help riders out. The fact that the country is small and the races are always close is good as well. Here in the US the races are almost always at the same tracks and usually a decent drive, not to mention you have to wait all day to do 5 lap motos because there are 40 3 man classes.

Interesting, thanks. I didn't really have too much idea of what the local scene is like over there. Obviously they are doing something right considering the caliber of riders they pump out.

Townley is the only New Zealander. JMB & Pichon (France) ,Langston & Albee (South Africa) are the others

Here is a fact...

The USA is only country to ever win all the major Championships (if you include 500-Supercross & The World Supercross Championship).

The USA has won MX1,MX2,MX3 World Chmpionships.

The USA has won 125,250,500 AMA Championships.

The USA has won MXON more then any other team.

The USA has won 250/450 Supercross, Lites East & West Championships and also 500 Supercross championships.

The USA has won World Supercross Championship's.
