Heard the AMA is charging $1000 per practice day at AMA sanctioned races starting this year...!

There goes the practice day before some of the AMA Events around here.... Texas Winter Series (Swan this weekend) and our Local Area Qualifier in May are not having a "Practice Day"

Anyone else canceling their practice days due to the cost - requirements going on now....?

Just curious....

I have no idea what was paid before but that could cause issues for some of the smaller series. Guess they will just have to call it an open practice and allow some non-racers in practice and then class it out.

Could be worse.

In AMA roadracing (Owned by Daytona motorsports group) You're not allowed to RACE within 30 days of an event if you plan to race with them.

I would assume it has to do with insurance. If I understand it correctly you pay the AMA insurance to cover per event. It may have gone up significantly due to health insurance crisis. Thus having to cut out covering practice days to keep it reasonable.

There are a couple of reasons why I don't think that this is not accurate. First, the only AMA fee for a practice day is insurance and the AMA insurance has gone down over the last few years, not up. Second, the AMA insurance for a practice day is about half what it is for a race day and at the most would be less than $500 for a practice. Third, and the biggest one is that I don't think anyone is forcing the promoters to use AMA insurance on a practice day. The reason they do it is that if they choose to have insurance, the practice day deal with the AMA is pretty good.

Matt check this out.....

It is an "Insurance Cost" issue....

Copied from the AMA "Resources & Forms" page....

AMA Preferred Insurance Program: The Association provides a Preferred Insurance Program as a service to all AMA Charter organizers. Use of the AMA Preferred Insurance Program is required for AMA Sanctioned events. The coverage and rates listed on the AMA Insurance Options form apply solely to sanctioned events described within the AMA and ATVA rulebooks. Coverage for ancillary activities, entertainment, or exhibitions held in conjunction with a sanctioned event is not provided, unless such coverage is specifically agreed to with the insurer in advance of the sanctioned event and designated on the event certificate of insurance.

Download the "2014 Motocross Competition Sanction Application" PDF here, page 3 show the insurance costs...

*4. Practice: Day before event = 25% of event rate and ambulance must be on site for practice for competition events.

For whatever: cost increase - issues etc., our local promoters have cancelled their day before the Area Q's practice day......

seems like this covered an event weekend in our last meeting. i'd have to check. I don't remember there being anything that went up that much in our discussion for upcoming season at our club/track. We have 4 races a year and 3 of those have a practice day on saturday before sunday race.

I assume you mean that they're charging the promoters the $1000.

Just wondering if anyone else was doing the same (cancelling practice day) or being effected by cost increases?

Seems like it if was $1000, the promoter could still make money...charging $25 per rider for practice before an event? 40 riders and they cover the AMA fee....

yeah but AMA roadraacing only does like 3 races a year

Practice insurance for an event with less than 300 participants is like 250. It went down again this year.

They're down to 4 right now...All are "double headers" for points...

They'll be out of business by 2016 easily.

I need to apologize here, my bad on “my” interpretation of the information I was told about the AMA’s new practice fee. I thought the AMA was charging $1000 for the practice day, which is wrong. The AMA does charge a 25% fee of the total insurance fees for the sanctioned event. So along with the “new 25% fee” and other costs involved our promoter has chosen to not have a practice day prior to our local area qualifier.

Hope this helps clear things up.

Just wondering how many other promoters are going to cancel their practice day prior to a sanctioned event due to additional cost….?
