Joey has style! I look like Robbie Knievel on a bike. I am confused.

We raced at TVLand today. Joe raced his TTR50 and won his class. We brought the KTM along for him to ride afterwards. The little guy Matthew enjoyed the mud.

I got it for him in the spring. The maintenance pissed me off so I put springs from a Mini Adventure in it. It is a little slower, but he can ride it all day with no issues.

Maintainance issues? What, like changing the oil after every fifteen minutes of ride time so the clutch will actually work? LOL What a pain in the ass that was when the kid wants to ride all damn day.

Cobra's are so much easier to maintain. I replaced clutch and washers once in two years. I couldnt even make a ktm run for a whole day. Glad the 50 days are long gone.

He wants to race the KTM, but the way I have it set up to run all day he will get smoked. Too bad nobody makes a decent 50.

curiouse to know how you have it set up? I just bought a Pro Jr for my son. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The Mini Adventure comes with actual springs in the clutch instead of washers. It is a real mellow hit, but he can ride it all day with no issues. I change the oil every other ride and it has been ok. No way he can compete with a bike equiped with the washers though. It is a good trade off for me. I hate working on that god damn bike. When he rides he stays on it until he runs out of gas and then comes in for another tank. He will burn 3-4 tanks in a day of riding. I would have to redo the washer clutch after every tankful. Go to KTMtalk, ther is a 50 forum there. You will learn alot. THESE BIKES ARE JUNK!!!!!!!!!

For all you KTM 50's dad's, get yourself a Dominator clutch NOW!
I just graduated from the KTM 50's and didn't get a Dominator. CONSTANT clutch problems! Like others stated, change oil constantly and a complete disassembly and cleaning of the clutch, washers, shoes, and drum every other or third oil change. I was able to get about 1-2 hours out of an oil change, but that's it. Basically every time I took the kids riding was a change/clean procedure.
Also, run a HIGH quality oil and mix in two cool in with the oil. For a while I ran Auto tranny fluid in until I changed the oil immediately after he got done riding. The oil was literally boiling in the oil pan. These things run HOT HOT HOT!!!

Today the overall best 50's are the LEM's. Moto Morini engines, oval tube frames, disk type clutches, oversized brakes, etc.

I'll second the use of Two 2 Cool. When my son was on a Pro Jr it's would get so hot I'd pour water down his boots to keep his little feet from burning. After adding the Two 2 Cool to the tranny, it made the heat much more manageable.

He gets it from all the quality time you have spent with him around motocross explaining and showing things. This sport is the coolest in the world when it comes to things like this. It's the only sport that I know of where it's socially acceptable to be best friends with your parents.....

For all you 50 dad's, you HAVE to get a Tomar clutch for your 50's and those washer stacks go the way of the Buffalo and so do all of the hours that you spend maintaining the clutch.

Go to www.tomarengineering.com and they will make your moto-mechanic lives MUCH better going forward.

These clutches work on the same principal as the clutch in a Top Fuel or Top Alky racer but they last a LONG time before needing any adjustments. Buy it, try it, fall in love with it.

I actually wish we could go back and do the 50 thing all over again!

I have been looking at the Tomar clutches. Is it worth the $400? I only paid a grand for the bike. It is pretty reliable now with the adventure clutch springs but it is much slower out of the corners than a washer clutch bike. He wants to race it now, so I have to do something. He doesn't stand a chance the way it is now.

Look into a Polini best 50 we ever had.We had a cobra and a ktm 50 pro jr both were nothing but problems.I got tired of the constant head aches and went for a Polini it was the best move we ever made for 50 racing.

Absolutely worth the $400. The bike will hit like a freight train and he can ride it all day (or month for that matter) with no issues.

If he wants to race the bike, isn't it worth $400 to let him have the joy?

Unless you are a serious LL contender, pick up a used modded 110. 65 sized and he can ride it all day long. Why learn to ride a 2 stroke at a young age when you can have 4 stroke reliability and performance?

The KX65 is a much better bike than the KX60. Better chassis, brakes, suspension,more low-end torque, etc. And for a 60 pound kid, the KLX's weight increase is significant, but so is the weight difference between the 50's (90lbs) to the 65's (120lbs).

Tip: The 2000 and 2001 KX65's were about an inch and a half shorter than the 2002+ models. With the suspension lowered down, and maybe a bit of foam taken out of the seat, they're no taller than the Pro Sr.

There are a lot of guys that have 50's only for race day, and use a 65 for practice, though the tomar/disk type clutches are making that less of an issue.
