Transmission Question

I installed a magnetic drain plug. I purposely left the oil in the transmission when I installed the magnetic drain plug because the oil had 3 rides on it, or, if you prefer, about 2.3 hours. I rode one more time with the magnetic drain plug for about another hour. The picture below is what I found on the drain plug upon my return from the approximate 1 hour total ride time. I'm particularly concerned about the little chunks (circled). The bike is a 2013 YZ250, and the transmission seems to be working well. Occasionally, it skips out of gear, but I always figured that was from my giant club feet. What do you think?

I'd pull the oil filter and look at that also, the gold flakes make me think your crankshaft is not happy.

Thanks, slipdog, but no oil filter - tis a 2-stroke.

Hey DJ, I just had the clutch apart last month as I installed a Rekluse auto-clutch. The OEM plates look immaculate and measured that way too. Yes, I do have the manual as I bought the bike new one year ago this month. I'm positive it only gets out of gear when I knock it with my giant club foot. I had a Hammerhead shifter on it, but it was just too big and my giant foot was knocking it all the time into neutral. I went back to stock shifter and that problem has largely disappeared. Thanks for looking.

I know the 05/06 YZ125 came with a shift stopper that had bearings in it, and they are well known for failing. The 07 came with a bushing type, and fixed the problem. I remember reading that their 250 used the bearing style, but wasn't known for failing. Maybe yours did.

Matt is correct.
I have had 5-6 2011-2013 YZ250 (2T's) come in the shop with failure of the bearing on the stopper.

Its an easy fix, if it happens to be your issue.

I have seen a few trans fail as well. However these trans were beat on and not taken care of.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you all for your thoughts. The only thing I've never done on a dirt bike is split the cases. I did once, as a teenager on an RM250B with some help from a mechanic, but that was pert near 40 years ago. Obviously that limited knowledge has left me. What does it involve to change this bearing?

718, like everything else on my bike, the transmission has been meticulously cared for with constant oil changes. No more than 3 or 4 rides and I change the oil. Thank you for the offer of advice.

I'll be in Jax over the weekend, couldn't remember where you live. But I'll bring my stuff to split it if your close by Jax somewhere.
Plan on going to WW for a few hours Saturday morning.

Harry, sorry I guess I just wanted to see the f after yz250, lol.

The advice on the shift stopper bearing is a good place to start. It's under/below the clutch so you'll have to pull the whole side case, but won't need to split the cases for that. The kickstarter idler gear is the only thing I can think of off hand that has a bronze bushing it rides on. That may be what the gold flakes are from so take a look at that also.

You might want to take the offer J's Dad made as you never really know until you break it all down and he seem very experienced in these situations.

Wow, you guys are beyond cool and helpful. Thanks so much, slipdog.

Jake's Dad, I live a few miles from WW. Indy MX is coming into town tomorrow, and I think we're going to ride WW Saturday. If I see you there, I'll at least come by and say hello and we can talk about the problem in more detail. Thank you for your generous offer.

OK, I ordered the shift stop. My son rides an 06 YZ125. Guess I better get one for him too.

so the only thing you did was add the rekulse recently....before buying more parts you may or may not need, pull the clutch cover off and inspect....pay good attention to the water pump and governer bearings....those chips look like they could be from the bearing cage. don't think anything would be wrong with the trans or trans bearings....I would be checking on the the most recent maintenance....being it was the clutch, sometimes putting the clutch cover back on, if not set correctly the water pump or govenrer shafts can ruin those bearings....

I'd at least look before you ride again and cause more expensive damage....

Thank you, kijen. Will do! Edit add: Nevertheless, it still sounds like good advice to change the shift stop.

on the 125. i think 05 was the only year with bearings vice a roller design.....maybe 06, worth checking....on your 13 250 pretty sure sure you have no worry's about the shift stopper....

if you need any help, just shoot me a pm on here, I got all the toolsSmile

Thanks, kijen. That's the one thing I'm lacking are tools to get the thing apart. That would be a huge help.

I guess I'm going to have to yank the clutch and all that. She jumped into neutral today and I'm positive it wasn't my giant foot. Both jumps into neutral were one right after the other too. I immediately slowed down and got off the track and parked the bike. Anybody got the tools to pull the clutch basket?

Pull the pressure plate, leave the plates in and hit it with a 1/2" impact and it'll zip right off. No special tools required.

Oh, and forgive my ignorance, but it has been a LONG time. Put it in gear or leave it neutral?

Leave in neutral, the plates will create the friction to hold the basket .

Harry, I have all the tools to split the case etc......send me a PM if you need help.....just finished a rebuild on a buds YZ250,

if it's kicking out of gear, (what gear?) sounds like a shift fork....but that does not account for the metal from your previous thread.....

just let me know....

Its between 2nd and 3rd. Thanks for the offer! How do you want to hook up?

That motor is out! Next step is break 'er down. I'm a little disappointed in the Yamaha reputation of "bullet-proof reliability." I take very good care of this machine. To have the transmission go wonky on me with 40 hours on the bike is a bit disconcerting.

When you find metal chunks in your oil find the problem before riding again. You will most likely be replacing all the bearings in the transmission now. I had the stopper come apart in my 125 in the beginning of a 120 mile endure. I had to replace every bearing in the motor and most of the transmission gears.

Thanks to Vital member Kijen, the problem has been found. Item #5 in this schematic had somehow come off and was beginning to grind into the bearing that supported the gear shaft. How it came off is beyond our ability to reason out. As you can see in the picture below, the offending snap ring has been grinding against the bearing. Everything else looked good.

And a HUGE shout to Kijen. He's a smooth cat with a wrench. It took us about two hours to break the engine down, and I held him up by yakking a lot. Thanks Kijen!

There's an old saying in Japan... I know they say it in Texas, I think they say it in Japan...

"Drink sake at lunchy and your tranny goes crunchy"

All back together. Started third kick. Tranny shifted fine on a run up and down the side walk. Thanks to all that offered help - especially kijen!
