The article said a perfect score for men was 20 pull-ups. What is the minimum?

Wow.. and hear I've been stressing about my pull-up game with the Air Force possibly on my horizon. I can at least pump out 3!

I've heard some of the guys weren't able to do more than that. My kid nailed 23, 137 or so sit ups in 2 minutes and did his three miles in 18 flat. All those years of swimming paid off....Smile The top recruit in his company knocked out 27 pull ups, 123 sit ups and cruised the three miles in 17:30 from what I remember.

That's crazy. I ran a six minute mile ONCE in high school, but that three in 18 is impressive. Holidays are over, back to the gym I go!

My son always hits about 280-ish on his PFT, just cant get that flat 18 minutes. All the rest he max's easily.

Leave it to liberals to try and water down the USMC. If women cant pass the same PFT as men, they have no business in a combat role. Period.

For real. Pull ups are hard, but it's a marker of your physical ability. You have it or you don't. I'm okay with the idea of a more pedestrian minimum, but 3 is virtually nothing. And this is the Marines we're talking about, they're supposed to be the baddest of them all.

I thought it was 3 to get in , I can't see anybody leaving boot camp at only 3 pullups .

That makes sense. I'm sure with how many you do in boot camp you could pump out a solid 4-5 haha.

3 pull ups is the minimum to pass a Marine Corps PFT, recruit or not. That means you are starting with 15 out of a possible 100 points. You need to make up those points in the other events (crunches and run) just to pass the overall PFT.

I once did an experiment where I quit going to the gym for one month and just did calisthenics at home concentrating on push ups mostly and kept track. After one month I did 15,500 push ups. Sounds like a lot but it is only 500 per day. Of course I only weighed 220 at the time.....

the article didn't say if that was there overall/end minimum, but it sounds watered down. I could see this as a non infantry MOS standard, but Marines are complete front of line.

yes the females have been having a very hard time switching to the pull ups vs flexed arm hang. this is actually the second time the Marine Corps has tried to switch to this for females.

once upon a time they only ran a mile and a half vs the males 3 mile. and we were also able to "kip" or use your body momentum for assistance on pull ups. back then everybody got 20 which is the max,

now the minimum is just that a minimum to be able to pass. If you do the minimum for all 3 events you will actually fail the entire thing. If a Marine is betting on the minimum in any event to get him by, well..... he or she wont be around long as we are a proud bunch and things are very competitive right now not only for promotion but to reenlist in general.

to max out the PFT a perfect 300 score you have to do
20 pull ups
100 crunches in 2 minutes
3 mile run in 1800 minutes

me at 39 years old usually get around
16-17 pull ups
100 crunches
1930-2030 min in the run.
and i would consider this about average there are plenty that score higher but even more that score lower. the 3 mile run is where most struggle and for some reason i have more of a natural running ability than upper body strength.
this is for half the year Jan - Jun the other half of the year is the combat fitness test (CFT) which i really enjoy cause i really put a hurtin on the younger ones there. the look on their face when they just got dusted by a 39 year old is priceless lol

I had no clue how competitive it was in the USMC until my kid got involved in all that. When he was preparing for OCS he had a badass Sgt-Major who they trained with and that dude was a sadist . He'd PT them into a pulp. LOL (my kid was sure glad though once he started OCS) Same with TBS at Camp Barrett, his SPC pushed them guys really really hard, many times to the point of injury. If you are fragile you just arent gonna make it in the Corps. Some of my sons friends went home from OCS and TBS from injuries.

Miss Super cross could do more than 3.

I see a lot of military and ex military.
Most are a sorry lot. Not what you'd expect to see or used to see around bases 10 or more years ago.

I see a few recruiters around regularly. Those guys are in shape. I guess to look the part but stillThe kind I'd want around when shit got ugly.

I love the feminist argument of "we can do what a man can do, probably better!!" And then as soon as you give them a chance to prove it they say "wait a minute! You can't expect a woman to do what a man can do!" Lol. Just like divorce: it's all women's lib and equal rights until it's time for the divorce, then it's "How am I supposed to survive without taking half his money? I'm just a woman!" Lol.

In a related note: it was rumored that after he met with some navy seals, Obama asked why there wasn't "more minorities" in special forces. Not long after this rumor came out, the left started agitating for "relaxed standards" so that more blacks and women could join special forces lol. If everyone cant be good enough, then by god the liberals will make sure that you don't really have to be good at all anymore! Equality!
1/7/2014 5:10am
I'll take a female that can only do 3 pull ups over theses guys lol

watch till the end. they guy on the left is priceless (Army strong)

yet the Marine Corps is facing deep cuts in its numbers. seems to me we could take deeper cuts in the other services and leave the Marine Corps alone to do its job.

Youre right about the USMC being cut, my kid put in for 'Career Designated' recently and was told that they are only retaining 40% of his MOS, so there is a 60% chance he wont be retained and will EAS this spring. Which blows my mind why they do that,,, a guy finally gets thru ALL that bullshit to get to where he is, finally gets his 2-bar, finally gets acclimated to handling his Marines and MOS with all the politics nonsense of chain of command, then they let 60% go so a new butter-bar from TBS steps in and it all starts over again. Thats what happens when you let elected morons control a fighting force, but it is what it is.

i may be in the same boat here soon. I joined in 1993 as a reservist switched to active duty in 1998. so i have 16 years of active duty service and now my mos has shrunk a lot. i have been passed for promotion once and if i get a second pass i could be shown the door before i reach my 20 active years and draw retirement.

this would be a real kick in the nuts to me.

The Corps has faced this before and was able to avoid forcing Marines out i hope we can avoid it again.

I don't think any one exercise should be a determining factor... I can run, dead lift, and squat as much as anybody (well, not anybody, but you get the point), yet I struggle with pullups. Years of MX crashes and baseball has taken their toll on my shoulders.

It's a tough time to be in the Marine Corps. It seems there is no loyalty to the guys who have served during these two wars. Anyone can get kicked out or forced out for anything and it doesn't matter because there is a fresh recruit that will take his place. As far as running an organization goes, it seems like bad policly to cut people who you have invested a boat load of money into and who have proven their loyalty to you with years of service.

One of my best friends from high school enlisted in the Marines after college. The first Gulf War ended before basic was over, so he was made a reservist. After close to a year of drills, his CO talked him in to applying for OCS. After about 12 years in, he left the Corps but hated working in the private sector. Little things like people calling in sick because they were hungover drove him nuts, etc. He was fortunate enough to have been able to rejoin the Marines, which I'm told is usually nearly impossible to do, and still be a career track officer. He either just got promoted or is just about to be promoted to full bird Colonel now, and plans to do the full 30.

theres a fine line there. traditionaly once you make it the the rank of SSgt or E-6 you are safe to do 20 and retire. As of right now that is still the case. They are looking into cutting that back and saying if you have made it to E-6 but failed promotion to E-7 twice then they can send you packing. I have to say i am right on that bubble I have been passed for E-7 once. The bad part is my reserve time didnt really count for much in total i already have 20 years service, by time i reach 20 active i will have a total of 26 years in.

At this point all im looking for is to be able to finish 20 active and draw a little retiirement pay and benifits. I sill have to figure out what i want to be when i grow up though this Marine Corps thing was just supossed to be temporary unitl i figured out what to do with my life lol. It has taken me to some far off places and i have been in charge of a lot of high dollar operations and many lives in my hands.

I'll be in zone for Gunny this year for the first time. I'm an 0372 so it's very competative, however there are a lot of promotion spots compared to other jobs. If I weren't in this job I'd be looking for the 15 year retirement, my MOS isn't eligible. A friend of mine did that as an 0369, he seems pretty happy with it.

I'm with you, the job has taken places I thought I'd never see and given me more of those "one in a million moments" than I can count. With a young family and constant deployment schedule, I'm feeling burned out.

Me and a few other Marines ride all over NC a least once a week. I mostly ride at JWTF, hit me up if you want to ride.

Good luck getting Gunny, my son LOVES his G-Sgt and prefers to hangout more with his NCOs & SNCOs. He is a 0602

Wish my kid was stateside, I miss him bigtime and hes sick of Okinawa. Sad
